Nokia N80 Help me decide! Im at a total loss

8 replies · 2,682 views · Started 10 July 2006

My contract ended quite a while back and I have been researching what phone to get for a few weeks, I have been looking at pda/phones but they are a downgrade from my k750i I feel even though they are completly different they are not quite upto par to swap a phone in for.

I have limited it down too the N80 I have used one for 10 minutes and was quite impressed though a bit confusing to get used only ever having SE's. There are 2 things putting me off getting it these being

The battery! I do have access to a plug socket most of the time but the fear of an accident or something and not having any battery left is worrying.

I have also heard there are a few phones coming out this month and next, is it worth me waiting? I have seen the N73 though it does not look that different spec wise, and I prefer the look of the n80 over the n73. I need convincing!

Another thing im wondering about is can I get snes games on it! that would be a big hit in my books! classics!

Everyone I have asked about the phone says its the best phone they have ever had, I read on these forums people's battery lasting under 24 hours!! which is terrible! and yet people have told me, and I have read battery's lasting 2 days, im at a loss and I need someone to "sell" me this phone who isnt a sales person!

Im just worried if I upgrade now, something better will come out by the end of next month which I will like alot more.

Convince me!:con?

well something better always comes out at the end of the next month, so you have to look at whats available now or you will always be waiting.

The phone is great, very high spec, good looking, relatively easy to use.

If you can live with the poor battery life that you may get (not all people seem to get this), and a poor night camera (still daytime pics seem ok after a little editing) then I would say go for it,

Otherwise look for something else.

Hope that helps.

Firstly something better will always be coming out in a few months 😊

Battery certainly isn't as good as my N70, however after a couple of charge/discharge cycles it gets better, plus if you set GSM mode only this improves matters, the easiest fix for me was to get a car charger as I tend to spend alot of time driving between customer sites!

The N73 looks like having a better camera (Carl Zeiss optics AND autofocus), however the screen resolution is smaller (240x320 vs 352x416) and the N73 has no WiFi.

I have to say I find the high resolution screen and WiFi great for browsing the web when I'm in bed 😊

The N93 looks interesting as well with 3.2meg camera, Carl Zeiss optics, autofocus and WiFi, but screen resolution is only 240x320 and its also a much larger phone than the N80.

See http://www.engadget.com/2006/04/25/nokias-n73-and-n93-launched/

At the moment I am very happy with my N80.

Hope some of the above helped!

Yes I understand forever waiting will get my no where.. but I dont believe anything that is AS good is going to be out this month or next. You say I should look for something else? (Not a rude comment) but what else is there thats as good as this phone? Thanks in advance!

In reply to Skearon, like I said I had a quick 10 minute go on the phone in that time I managed to find the internet browser and have a quick go, it looks great! the only thing I find difficult is browsing the pages (scrolling) (sp?) left/right down/up I wouldnt mind a touch screen that would be easier but then it wouldnt be a phone would it! do you find the scrolling a problem? write me a mini review if you will! Cheers.

Beware when comparing screen resolutions. A higher screen resolution doesn't necessarily means that you'll be able to see more on the screen. It can simply means that the pixels are going to be smaller making images and text look sharper. Nice but not terribly useful.

I believe that it's what has been done with the N80. Despite having a screen resolution 4 times greater than the "old" series 60 smartphones such as the N70, it doesn't allow you to see 4 times more information on the screen. It simply makes the screen look better. Yes, you can see a bit more info than the old models but not that much.

The E61 on the other side, which has a screen with "only" 320x240 pixels, allows you to see much more on the screen than the N80. So the N73, despite having less pixels on its screen than the N80 might actually have a "larger" screen as far as screen real estate is concerned.

I find that after a while, like everything the scrolling and using the browser becomes second nature and you get used to it and the way it works, and I agree using the internet with the screen quality is a joy, there are no problems in this respect.

Sorry not sure what phone to reccommend, I am thinking of changing mine becaus e of the battery problem and just reading reviews at the moment, but didnt come to any firm conclusions.

Bare in mind the battery issue may be rectified with a firmware upgrade, or a high capacity battery may be introduced.

I personally think the chances of Nokia introducing a high powered battery now its released is slim but I maybe wrong, I think they will be more intrested in the new models they are releasing.

possibly, but if they need more power in other smartphones they make keep the same style of battery but upgrade the power output, and that would still work in the N80
