on my old nokia, when I had missed calls, it would display the number of missed calls on the screen then when i pressed the button it would tell me who called.. on my 9290, it doesnt say anything unless i check my call log, missed calls... how can i set this to come up automatically?

It's at Menu 2 (Call Register)...

😉 Please take note that RECEIVED/MISSED calls functions are Network Services... (which work only in networks that allow you to view the callers phone number... better check your network...)

i seem to have phrased my question wrong, I meant when someone calls and I'm not there to hear the ring, i want my screen to tell me if I've missed calls, without me having to look it up myself..

😮 Yeah it should!!! and missed/received calls need no settings...
must be something wrong with your phone...
or your network provider is playing jokes on you... heheheh....

It happened a couple of times...did you try re-booting? After you do so you should be ok 😉 . If not there is something wrong... :-?

If you happen to be with T-Mobile then it must be your phone cause my notification works. When in doubt... REBOOT 😉

grrrrr...
it must be something wrong in your mobile.. try rebooting mobile + PDA .. it might work.
