(first post, be gentle! 😊 )
I've just got my first symbian phone this weekend and i cant for the life of me get the file sharing working!
I have got the N80 browsing the internet via my wifi connection ok but i cant seem to share files between it and my laptop, these access the internet through a 3com wireless router.
I've set the sharing of folders on the N80 and the home networking icon is in the gallery but all it says once selected is "attempting to connect" (IIRC!), and just seems to not find anything, just sits there. 🙄
I have setup a file to share on my laptop (after running the file sharing wizard with my XP Pro).
I have also enabled uPNP on my router, dont know if i really need to but anyway...?!
Where do i take it from here?
Any help appreciated!! 😊

This has already been answered in another post by N/A
Not unless you install a web server or some other kind of file sharing server on your phone. Not many of those around, though.
You can howerver use bluetooth to browse your files of your N80 on your PC

Not really practical because of running cost, really needs to be a wifi version.
What i did find was a link from that site that I find quite entertaining 😊..
http://www.scifi.com/eureka/madeineureka/ especially the cryo kennel 😊
OK cheers.
Whats this "Orb" program, could this be used in some way?
I have a Bluetooth usb dongle but its a bit slow of course, much faster via USB cable or by putting the miniSD card in the laptops card reader but of course file sharing over wifi would be handy.

Orb is a file streaming program on your pc that you access via a webpage, lets you watch your video's or live tv, or play music or look at your pictures, I dontthink you can actually transfer files though, would be nice if they implemented this feature
Hi!..
i think that you need to learn more about Upnp ...
The N80 has it ... so .. i am using UPNP just after i bought N80 😊
Install a Upnp "Home Media Server" app on your PC ... That´s all you need...
Then you will find your "Home Network" (on Gallery) ... then you can share, show or play files on the Phone to PC and download files on PC to the phone.. all via WLAN Upnp ...
On Gallery you can see options over any file "Play on Home Network" .. that means that your file will be showed or played at your PC at a direct streaming by WLAN ..
You can also copy that Shared files on your Media Server (PC) to the phone.. as you can also see when you browse that files on your phone "Home Network" on gallery ...
Anyway.. many options... Upnp it´s really great technology and N80 was the first Smartphone with it in the world ..
I am using "Simple Center" app on PC and work fine .... but i see that "TVedia" it´s better... i´ll test soon...
cya!
😎
Great info, and good news 😊..will give all this a look 😊
Unfortunaly not all of us are tech savy as far as computers and especially networking is concerned, we can only forward what I have learnt through other posts on this forum, untill somebody with greater experience in the field has something to add 😊
Is it possible to add your N80 to 'My Network Places' in XP, there is an option to Hide/Show networked Upnp devices.
I have enabled Upnp in the Router settings & tried to add a new network place but can not get this to work.
Am I looking at the wrong thing?
See aefox pst above, seems you need to Install a Upnp "Home Media Server" app on your PC to get this working
Aefox, where do we get simple center from ?

I've been trying to set the file sharing up with XP without success.
I cant get my N80 to see the network, in Gallery -> Home network it just says "waiting for devices" without connecting to anything.
I have enabled uPNP on my router.
Is there any free programs like Simple Centre?

Sorry to sound like a n00b (i am a networking n00b, only had a router for 2 weeks!) but when you say Select Browse, and locate Home Media Server on your hard drive. Double Click Home Media Server.exe. you mean a Home Media server piece of software that you've d/l or is this a particular program within XP and if so where exactly?!
I have XP with SP2.
Thanks for your help on this, much appreciated. 😊

O well i'm stumped cant get this working. 😞
Should i be able to connect the home networking through the Gallery -> home networking option at least cus i cant do this even?
Hi!...
Just after you install "Simple Center"... you need to add some files to the main media library on the app ... then you will see that files on the N80 Home Network ... of course you need to keep running the Simple Center on PC ...
On DEVICES option on the Simple Center you will see the Nokia N80 detected ... and if Sharing Files are ON at the Home Network setting on N80 .. then you will see those files on the PC Simple Center...
Dont know what else to tell you ... i just did those things and its working good...
good luck!
😎

I Really Hate How People Comes To Fraud And Spam Forums I Really Hate This
AEFOX and Dx, i've added the files (it prompts you when you install it) but in Simplecenter there are no devices found in the devices section even when i try to find some.
I dont have Windows Firewall running and i've tried disabling the firewall in my router but still no go, i dont have to open ports on my router do i even if i have the firewall disabled (i'm a networking n00b so please bear with me!)?
Although as this is within the home network i shouldnt have to do this right?
It could be my phone not detecting the the home network some how (i can surf via Wifi fine though)....even if my PC with Simplecenter is OFF should i be able to connect to something when i select home networking in Gallery? cus all it ever says is " waiting for devices ".
I have the same problem as you duckson.
i can surf t`internet through my Linysys router but i can`t get my n80 to connect to my laptop, it just says "waiting for devices".
i`ve actually give up on it, might even reposess my "old" n90 from the mrs (great vids, tomtom, )
I can only think it must be a router setting?
How have you lot got the WLAN network setup? Infrastructure or Adhoc? mines on Infrastructure.

ok, u gotta have simple center opened on ur computer, on ur n80 go to conectivity - then click on he redhouse icon(i dun remember the name lol) then select settings, click on share content, select your access point in the option below, then open simplecenter and try to see if ur phone is located
cheers
Dx
Dx, i did exactly as you say which i have been doing all along.
BUT i have now got it working to some extent, i didnt do anything different to what i have been doing though...didnt alter any settings etc!
Only thing i have done is reboot my phone a few times when i was messing with GSM and dual mode setting...although this had likely nothing to do with it the phone rebooting might of sorted it out, not really sure why its decided to work now!
However, I can only view files in Simple center from my phone and i cant view my phones files from simple center....also i cant transfer files from my phone to the pc but i can transfer files from PC to phone.
u gotta enable file sharing on ur N80, go to
conectivity>(the red house icon lol i dont remember the name)>settings
select the first option and fill al the info that it asks u
then go back to main menu and select share contet and enable sharing on videos, music
that should do the job
cheers
Dx
Ah yes, i disabled it when i was messing with it trying to get it all working. 😊
It wouldnt pick up simplecenter again tonight but a reboot of the phone and it picked simplecenter up without me changing a thing....maybe other people having the "waiting for devices" message should try turning the N80 off and on and trying it again.
