Are Nokia going to bother updating the Firmware or what?

We all know the N80 has the potential to be an amazing phone but there's so many minor gripes that collectively they end up spoiling the phone altogether.

My girlfriend has just bought a Nokia 6280 and the picture quality on it blows my N80 out the water, especially in low light situations. There a times when I take a picture in low light and the subject isn't even visible, yet her phone will take a noise free picture perfectly. Also, the Flash on her 6280 is way brighter than the pathetic N80 one, her's is enough to temporarily blind you.

Then we have video capture, same dark crap from my N80, 352x288 @ 15fps, the Nokia 6280 on the other hand, 640x480 @ 15fps and 352x288 @ 30fps!! Guess which phone cost more?

Then we move on to the slider, pathetic loose, wobbly slider on one phone, nice snappy spring loaded slider on the other, guess which one has the pathetic one? Yep N80

The last firmware was the 3rd of May 2006, well that's 3 months ago Nokia, get you bloody fingers out, or are you just going to release a new model to replace the N80? I remember when I first got my SE T610 the pictures were dark on that, within a month SE has released a firmware upgrade sorting it out.

I just can't believe their flagship model has so many faults! Then they release the N73 which sounds brilliant, but no WiFi! They always have to make one part of each phone crap don't they!

If the SE K800i used S60 this Nokia would go straight back, it's the only plus I can say for it so far.

I read somewhere that Nokia make phones that are good in some aspects and bad in others on purpose, even though they have the ability and technology to make them good in all ways, this way they can have a wider range to appeal to a wider customer base and therefore sell more models,

Its just a pity that with a phone like the N80, or any other EXPENSIVE flagship phone they cant decide to put the best technology they have.

This will never happen so every phone will always be a compromise.

A damn shame ..

Well why can't they follow Sony E's way of having price for features. The more you pay the more you expect to get and the better quality. Why should I fork out 350 for a N80 when the camera is appauling in comparison to a 200 6280?

The K800i is currently Sony's flagship model, it has more features than all cheaper SE phones. It's camera is superior to the K750i, it has all the features it had plus more. Nokia are doing my head in to be honest.

Couldnt agree more, the people who are willing to spend more on a product because of the feature list expect to have the best that is available.

I have seen Nokia adverts selling the N80 as a camera phone, this is appauling because some people will but this because they have been pursuaded by these adverts, and they are going to be extremely dissapointed that they can only use the camera in good daylight conditions.

i waited for the n80 because of s60 platform and because of the 'great' camera i was expecting, but now i wish i had got an SE K800i instead 😞 better battery, doesn't take 30 SECONDS to send a txt, better cam, etc etc..... nokia you robbed me 😞😞 k800i is only £320 SIM FREE compared to n80 £364!!!

My source told me official V4.xxxx will be released early August - patience! 😎

It must be a serious update if they're taking it straight to v4.xxxx

Here's hoping anyway :icon14:

Is the 8th of August not early August. Surely it is (1 -10) early August, 11-20 mid Augist and 21 - 31 late August?

Hope it a good source....only 2 days to go til its mid August.😊 😊

You should upgrade to 3.617 right now! I have an orange N80 and it came with 3.614 and was incredibly unstable. 3.617 has improved things a lot. It's still buggy as hell, resets a lot, but it's much better.

That's a pretty sad indictment for the state of the phone on release. It should never have seen the light of day with 614.

how can I update though? Do I need to go to a nokia centre? My "local" one isn't very local and isn't very good.
They "updated" my n70, had it over night and didn't actually do anything! It was the same version number when i got it back.

I'm on v3.0614.03 11/04/2006 RM92 (SIM free) and don't appear to have the GPS dropout issue which seems to have been introduced with the 3.617 firmware revision. I've had no major issues of any kind with my current firmware, and only 1 reset (when trialling some new software) and only 1 memory card drop.

Personally I'm holding off on upgrading until the next major release, and I'll only do that once it's shown that the GPS dropout issue's been resolved.

oh yeh .. I'd forgotten about our conversation about GPS.
I will hold out as well. Although I really would like decent sat-nav (voice/visual guide) software that doesn't require GPRS access.

im new too this whole N80 thing and the software
im leaning

can any one tell me

how i would go about updating the firmware?
where i can get this firmware from?
or where i have to take my phone?

thanks for the help

by the way this is a fully sick site i love the help

I think the problem came in with 3.6.014.06 which is what I have.... I too hope that this rumoured 4.0.xxxx version will fix this problem.

If only the developers at nokia would look at forums like this occasionaly and get some sort of grasp of how they could actually make there customers happy. Seriesly hope this 4.0 version will clear some major problems up!

Would a firmware update be able to add an autofocus to the camera if nokia included it?

How i would update the firmware on an N80?

Do a search in this forum for firmware and you will find all info and instructions you need.

Or take your phone to a nokia service center

Hi all,

Apologies, I had another word with my source and it's more likely to be early September for the V4.xxxx N80 Firmware release - my fault for getting all your hopes up! :frown:

Oh well, as long as it's in the works it's fine with me. Does your source have any info on what's being adressed?

ahh i wouldnt worry mate. It did seem a little too close to be released now, s mentioned earlier we're nearly into mid august.

I keep umming and ahhing over whether to buy a bluetooth gps from ebay and just play around with stuff.

september that sucks, i bought a phone to use NOW not to partly use til nokia can sort it out to how it SHOULD have been released, shame on you NOKIA no more phones from you for me 😊

My N80 is working realy well at the moment, touch wood. I have not experienced any of the problems I have read about as yet.
It connects nicely to my wi-fi router. I seem to be one of the few people (for the time being) that are happy with the N80.

Its on the Three network and has:

V 3.0618.0.2
25-05-2006
RM-92
Nokia N80 (45.02)

well i am extremely happy with my phone. i love the fact it has wifi, radio, pretty decent camera and it can phone people and send text messages 😉
Seriously, love the phone but as said, you do buy a phone expecting to be able to use it.
There's always going to be things that niggle with people, for instance not making it backwardly compatible with older versions of S60 is gutting and I really would like to be able to use sat-nav (specifically TomTom / Route 66)
But other than that, its a massive improvement overmy n70

Overall happy here with the N80 also, except as you all know my 2 biggest problems, battery life and poor night camera, apart from that its a cracking phone.

I do sympathise with the people who are having other problems, my last smart phone was a pile of sh*t...dont laugh, but it was the Sendo X and I had all sorts of problems with that, Sendo went bankrupt but somehow I decided to take out extra warrantee from pixmania when I bought the phone (totally out of character for me) and although I had to take pixmania to court to get my money back because they said that the faults were not under warrantee, they did see sense and pay me before the court issued the CCJ because I could prove that the phone was indeed faulty by actually pointing to the Sendo X forum on the ALLABOUTSYMBIAN web site here and proving that many many other people had the same problems😊, I was lucky

Pity we cant do something like that with the N80 battery problem..I am still under the impression that Nokai actually know that the poor and insufficient battery for this phone is a real big problem for alot of us (not all I know), and I am sure that they will not admit it because they will then I would think be liable to change every battery in every Nokia N80 in the world.

But back to my first comments.

The phone is great 😊

Cash, this is a good point..
if there are SO many people with problems surely theres something we can do?
or is that wishful thinking...

I think maybe wishfull thinking, getting organised to do something like that would be a complete nightmare,

We would have to prove that the battery is not suitable for the phone and therefore the phone has been supplied unfit for the purpose it was designed for, especially with the battery life specs that Nokia have published, 8 days standby etc is a complete fabrication of the actual battery life,

I know that something similar was done with a class action lawsuit against the apple Ipod battery a few years ago, but I think it was picked up by a lawyer or law firm in the US that probably wanted to make a name for themselves because of apple's and the ipods high profile.

I actually love taking big companies to court for these sort of problems, but I think in this case its not worth the effort and time it would take to get a result.
