Nokia N80 & TomTom - The truth.

Everyone knows that tomtom have not yet released software or a patch so run their satnav on an s60-3 phone, but on various threads it has been said that they are working on new software or on a patch for the current stuff, can anyone provide a link from tomtom or elsewhere that specifically states what is happening over this?

Cheers

I received an email from TomTom support in July stating that they were working on a new version of TT Mobile 5, but there was no release date set.

In my view TT is the best GPS app for smartphones, and I will wait as long as it takes. The plus side of delays is that TT are probably doing loads of testing before release.

Considering that N80 V4 FW appears to have resolved the bluetooth DATA/GPS issues, then I would be surprised if TomTom don't release the patch in the next month or so.

It's also worth mentioning that Nokia will most likely use Symbian 3rd Edition on all future smartphones, so all Symbian APP vendors will have to embrace and support this version of the OS if they want to continue making money from Nokia users.

That'd be about right, rcastberg, given that I gave up waiting for Tomtom and bought Navicore *last night*...

I'll console myself for the meantime with "Currently not available through TomTom.com".

But I'd be surprised if this version didn't support 3rd Edition.

Though i can't see any compatability statements:
Press Release
TomTom 6 Product page

This press release refers to TomTom Navigator 6, which is for PDA's and Windows Mobile OS devices, not for Symbian mobile devices.

However, if TT Navigator 6 is out, then TT Mobile 6 is probably not far behind 😉

It says in the press release tt5 nav and tt5 mobile have been merged into one, its just tt6 navigator now theres no seperate mobile version.

I stand corrected! 😉

TomTom Unveils TomTom NAVIGATOR 6

New product integrates TomTom NAVIGATOR 5 and TomTom MOBILE 5 into one multi-platform solution

TomTom NAVIGATOR 6 will be available from September 2006. It is available as a stand alone software product or bundled together with a mobile phone or PDA (see separate press release) through retailers. TomTom NAVIGATOR 6 will cost from 69.

I have a horrible feeling the from 69 mentioned in the press release will be the charge for upgrading from V5 to V6.

So we will know about Tomtom N80 support one way or the other in September!

Dez

I think your probably right about the from 69, although on the euro release it says:
"TomTom NAVIGATOR 6 with navigation software and the maps of a country / region plus major roads of Western Europe on memory card, will cost 99. "

Says "will cost 99", although on the UK release satement it from "will cost from 69". Can only hope it means will cost not will cost from, although if it was 69 / 99 (same price give or take) then it would be in line with route 66.

I just bought navicore two days ago and to be honest i'm quite disapointed by it (although there doesn't appear to be anything better on the market at the moment- which is a shame)

I really hope the new tomtom navigator works on my beloved n80, because navicore will be going straight on ebay

Yes, I guess TomTom could be pricing the new product lower to compete with R66 and others.

Unfortunately, I still fear there may be no FREE upgrade from v5 to v6.

Please TT, prove me wrong and release a v5 to v6 patch real soon.

Still no solid info on the release date for Tomtom Navigator 6, but some of the online web stores, DABS etc., seem to have already listed and priced the product, but currently showing no availability.

For the first time since TomTom Navigator was launched in Europe in June of 2002, TomTom wil not be offering an upgrade program to existing users. The main reason being that is has become very difficult for them to keep supporting all the PDAs out there, especially with the new features that have been introduced over time. They realize people are going to be disappointed, but we should keep in mind last year's great deal, v5 and maps of Europe for €59. Besides the €129/$129 price for the DVD version is barely more thant what an upgrade used to cost in the past.

So I was right about there being no FREE upgrade from v5 to v6.

Lanches faster, 10 seconds versus 30 seconds

More colorful icons (65535 colors)

New maps : ships with the latest TeleAtlas 2006.4 maps, except the UK and Ireland that will have TeleAtlas 2006.7 maps for full coverage of Ireland

Optional "North UP" 2D navigation mode that is especially convenient for pedestrian use to avoid the annoying map rotations due to the limitations of
GPS accuracy in urban environments and at low speeds
Navigation to a contact directly from the "Navigate to" menu

Optional "Safety Lock" navigation mode to have quick access to essential features while navigating (Navigate to, Alternative route, day/night, Exit, Sound on/off, 3D on/off)

Overspeed indicator on main roads

Actual Signpost display on freeways

Improved ETA (Estimated Time of Arrival) thanks to the updated TeleAtlas maps (verified in Europe so far)

"Arrival time" feature for a quick view of your progress, late or early in color coded minutes

Navigation to a GPS (latitude/longitude) position

"TomTom Buddy" feature to transmit your position, a destination or a message via GPRS
Pre-installed speedcam database - Europe only
Tunnels shown on the maps with a shaded graphical display
Custom POI categories increased from 39 to 100

Absolutely NOTHING to justify TomTom's money grabbing upgrade cost. lol

Hello,

Can anyone help ? Will my Nokia N91 work with TT^ and will I have to buy a specific bluetooth GPS module or will any of the ones off Ebay work (I used to use TT on my 6680 and it was great, but it worked with a 40 bluetooth GPS from Ebay).

I love my N91 and some of the features are great, but I am dissapointed that the software seems to be quite limited - am I alone in this ?

Great forum by the way

Paul

tomtom 6 has been out for nearly over a month on the internet.

search torrent spy for it.

but there is no version for the S60v3

Resonate1 wrote:If it works on the E61 it works on the N80, software wise they are the same and screen res etc.

I've just had a look at the E61 and I have my doubts. It might be the same screen but it looks like it's rotated 90 degrees. I can see this causing *interesting* behaviour on the N80.

I really hope it does work as I want to use it in the USA in October...

Update: not exactly a definitive answer, but I found this thread (see the post from bang-bang):
http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=45494&highlight=n80

He may have copied it from here (they also have some screenshots I haven't seen before):

More speculation here, e.g. the post from Penfold:
http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=45317

Seems likely that it will work on all 3rd Edition phones, but they've only fully tested it on the E61. It would be an odd business strategy to only support one Nokia phone...

this is what i got from inkino
This is the official date we have been given by our supply channels.
However, I personally thing thatthis is going to be delayed. I will echo
new info on the site.

I think its harsh how much gps is. i will never be able to get one and that was the main reason for buying my phone.

I know alot of work goes into creating gps but theres no way on earth i can fork out that much. 😞 might have to wait six month till someone cracks it 😞

when u think about it 150 quid for the gps reciever and the softwer isnt too bad. + all the updates u`ll get etc

I've already got a TomTom GPS receiver, do you think they will sell the a software only version shortly too?:con?

My mistake, on the TomTom website it shows two boxes, the first one is software and GPS reciver (at 137.53) and the second box is software only (no price set as yet).

DABS.COM claim they will sell TomTom Navigator 6 on CD/DVD from as little as £32!.

However they have no stock at the moment, and I would advise any buyers to make sure they are buying a Symbian Smartphone version and not a PDA version.
