I have a love-hate relationship with my N80. I love its features and size but the camera almost never fails to disappoint me. All I want is to be able to take decent photos of my kid especially in low-light environment.
I was hoping that version 4.0623.0.41 would somehow improve the camera but I was disappointed.
Do you think future firmware updates can fix the camera or is this a hardware problem?
BTW is the N73 significantly better in taking photos of moving subjects (kids/pets) at low-light conditions?
Maybe... it depends from wich of Nokia, and mainly from Optics of N80. Without good Optic, never a SW can make a good camera. Now, N80 have a good optic:con?
Apparently it's the way the phone processes the pictures that make them so poor. Whether they can change or enhance the processing method using a firmware upgrade is debatable, it sounds more like a hardware problem to be honest. One thing's for sure, I'm gonna go bonkers with Nokia if the N80i has a better quality camera
i hope so ,otherwise i'll have to find another phone that gives me better photos and videos

Lol i so do too ... its by far the best nokia i have ever had but is just full of silly mistakes... its very nearly a good phone but just falls short on so many things. considering the specs of the camera i to was disappointed with its performance. 😮
When clicking, the flash goes on, off, on, off.. for some reason. It *should* imho go on, stay on, check WB, snap picture, process, flash off. That would be a firmware issue.
But, the flash is so *fking* bad, I don't think we'll se any improvements. I'm considering an add-on-flash... 'cause the camera is so great in good light...
Wonder if they could use a firmware update to boost the power sent to the flash? Not sure if it would work, all depends whether it's been used to it's maximum already. One things for sure though, the flash on the Nokiia 6280 is far brighter!
@Ungjaevel
Have you found an add-on flash? That would be an option since nokia really don't seem to care about camera.

My guess that firmware won't help, 2 updates haven't. The camera hardware is crap.
The N80 is just a mobile phone camera. Even the N93, N73 , K800, Sharp 903 struggle with many things and i would place N80 just before that. I'm amazed people still moan about all these phones cameras. No one ever claimed these were going to outperfom good digital cameras. Yet you still see people complaining about say the Sharp 903, K800 and N93.
For the record the N80 was much worse for pictures in its pre release state. The one i have takes better pictures than any of the reviews. I use a scratch protector on my lens.
Stills are so-so, but the low-light video is useless crap. And even the N70 was better in video, it's not about comparing with digital cameras.

There are arent many camera phones better than N80 and even then all are poor at the dark. Including Japanese phones.

The N70 is better than the N80 in low light pics and video. The K800i absolutely trounces the N80 in all conditions. I'm embarassed by the video taking of my N80 when my girlfriends 6280 can take MUCH better quality video's in all conditions

Have to agree with this, my N70 had far better photo still and video capabilites and my wife's 6280 pictures and video quality simply wipe the floor with my N80, in low light her 6280 produces crisp photos with no noise, the video is also double the resolution at 640 x 480 and gain noise free, amazing.

lol get a grip. N70 and 6280 dont compare. Ever had a look at how the images look on your pc?
I have a Sharp 903 , K800, N80 and N73 in the house. Dont get me wrong but with your standards you should use a real camera. None of them compare in the dark or without sunlight to a real camera.
