My 7650 is going back tomorrow...

I got my 7650 from Phones4u in the UK just under a month ago, on Vodafone (Singlepoint). It has a problem, which is that if I travel to a different cell (e.g. I drive to work in the morning, or go out shopping somewhere or whatever) it doesn't register properly with the new cell. Although there is still a signal registering on the signal level meter, I can't make outgoing calls (they fail with the message "disconnected"😉, and people can't call me. Very frustrating. If you switch the phone off and on again it works fine. I'm forever getting accused of leaving my phone switched off, when I'm actually sat there wondering why nobody ever calls me. 😊

I've spoken to the tech support department at Singlepoint and they got me to set up network selection to "Vodafone" rather than automatic. This didn't help. I went back to Phones4U today hoping that they'd be able to flash some new firmware or something, but they just said that because it was less than 30 days old they'd just give me a new one, so I'm swapping it over tomorrow (or rather, my wife is taking it because I'll be at work). My current firmware version is 3.16 (15-08-02), I'll check the version of the new one and post here when I get home tomorrow evening.

I'm pleased it's getting replaced, the keyboard slide is also getting a bit loose.

A friend of mine had a lot of problems getting a T-Mobile 7650 exchanged within the first 30 days (3 days in fact!) by Phones4U. They fed him a huge crock about not having them in stock at 4 seperate branches, even though he'd rang them all in advance and reserved a handset at each of the stores. :x

He'd been given a 100 discount by T-Mobile, thanks in part to his 95 p/m phone bills. He ended up having to contact head office before getting his phone exchanged. They really must be the worst of the highstreet retailers in the country. Ever wonder why they're the only ones brave enough to use Singlepoint as their vodafone SP?! 😃

Jon,
I hope you have better luck with them. 😉

I'm aware of the "reputation" Phones4u and Singlepoint have got themselves. Unfortunately I didn't find out about it until after parting with my cash 😞 (but I did get a good deal on the phone).

Anyway, this particular branch of Phones4u (Banbury) seem very helpful, in fact it was them that told me that they'd replace the phone, I was happy to try a firmware upgrade.

We shall see tomorrow!

I must say that the Oxford St. branch in London are pretty good too, then again I'm only comparing them to their other branches!

😃 Goodluck!

Well, they were fine about swapping it, so I now have a brand new 7650 (+new box, manual set, charger etc...). However it's still running version 3.16. 😞

The slide is a lot better and the spec of dust that was annoying me under the screen has gone.

I'm going to try it for a few more days and see if the problem is still there, if it is I'm going to try and get it flashed, either in a different phone shop or in the Nokia service centre in Milton Keynes.

😃

My friend was given V3.12 on both his handsets. This was only last weekend! Both handsets had an expiry date of mid November.

Good luck with your new one, i'm sure you'll grow to love it!

Well, I already think it's a fantastic phone. But at the end of the day, the main feature of a mobile phone is to make and receive phone calls whilst mobile. 😃

That was what I thought until I got my 7650 😃
