Note that if this is the one that's been doing the rounds on Chinese/HK sites (including Nokia), then this is a trial (2 or 3 months reportedly). It appears to be designed for a subscription with chinamobile.
Other versions seem to be appearing with deals for other operators. I know 3 have one, but don't know if it's the same. Orange have released one in France and are rolling out in other countries.
They'll all charge as it's a massive threat to the very lucrative SMS market. Operators might start blocking unapproved apps I bet. Some 3rd party apps though hopefully will be free at least when used with WiFi but often I'm no where near a WLAN :frown:
yeah, I now have the pay or go away deal too on this MSN... so Ive sacked it off as I didnt use it that much anyway... and MSN is on Fring.
Shame really as it appears to use far less data than Agile Messenger.
Dismissed Fring before because it didn't support the industry standard SIP (instead of these proprietary systems like Skype), but just checked and it appears they do now. For MSN though it still depends how much data it uses as if it's low enough I can use it on GPRS without costing a fortune. I'd only use VoIP over WLAN though and that limits me to hotspot locations or at home.
I'm also betting Fring will become a pay service later.
yeah, I never use the GPRS / 3G service... as I dont feel the need to pay for something when I get so may free miniutes... may as well just call if its that important when Im out and about...
but if Im sat at a desk, home, pub etc then I'll use wifi.
As for Fring charging... yeah, its a possibility... I hope they dont tho... at the moment its a useful all in one tool thats still being developed! Besides there are other apps out there that are free too.

What free apps could I use to connect to MSN? (besides Fring)
erm eMSN, Coogee-Free, HIER ... erm.... probably some more... ?

Problem I have is the places I work don't always allow messenger apps on their PCs and there's no WiFi.
I use WiFi at home, but generally I have my laptop on with Messenger.
Sometimes useful in a hotel or other hotspot though.
It's not essential to have it, but using the china/HK thing I'm finding it's only taking about 500k a week to just have it sit there and keep me in contact with my contacts. Okay on Orange that's about a 1 a week :frown: (how in this day and age can 500k cost 1 !!! :frown: ).

The problem I can see is operators blocking their use once they develop their own solutions. They see the need to move to IM but the risk to SMS revenue from free apps is a massive one. Obviously this just applies to GPRS/3G.
Downside to all this on the N80 is the battery will only last a day I find with a messenger app active during the day.
thx. i'm gonna try coogee since it's not a Java app
let us know how it goes then
Well the China/HK one didn't even prompt me to pay. It's just saying the service is "not yet available" outside if China and Hong Kong.
Nice low footprint and low data rate app. Just a shame it's limited and not free.
yeah, it is a shame cause its a pretty tidy app
ultra IM pro is what you want (costs like 6 for a lifetime licence)
or
mig33beta
OK i finally got a copy that works on the N80 across three. Its the N73 version but as expected it works just fine with no issue at all 😊
If anyone wants a copy i may be persuaded to part with the source 😊

Oohh - is this the three version of the software?

It sure is
Comes in 2 files one appears to control the server element the other the client itself 😊
Works supremely well on the N80 especialy with the higher res screen 😊
Well strange thing happened today. Just tried the China/HK version of the Windows Live Messenger again and it's working again!
Odd as it was telling me it was only for China/HK before.
Still no mention of paying for it though.
P.S. This was connecting via Orange.
tried again? Does that mean reinstalled or just launched the current install?
im using it with my home network and it works very good but a gile is better but this one is free
agile is only better in that you can connect to more than one IM client...
this MSN version was just like the real thing.... so is hard to beat... especially as it WAS free... shame it dont last tho! 😡

Just tried the current install again.
It's odd though it never said anything about subscriptions, only this message before about it being for China/HK use only, but now it's stopped saying that.
It is nice. The data rate footprint is so low. Much better than Agile, and now of course my trial on Agile has expired and I don't really want to pay for it if there's a better option elsewhere (even if it comes from an official version via Orange or whoever, so long as it's the official MSN one).
Hmm, interesting... might try it again then
