W950i known problems

Post all known W950i problems in this thread. Include your firmware version where possible.

I'll start:

A reboot is required before some settings (e.g. ring tones) correctly apply.

Radio does not auto-tune on first run. A reboot is required before it starts working.

Firmware: CXC162037 R9C001

On every power on my phone starts with two error codes:
1.
Application: Main
Reason code: KERN-EXEC
Reaon number: 0

2.
Application: !MIDP2.SystemAMS.Installer
Reason code: DBMS-Table
Reaon number: 11

After pressing "Proceed" phone completes power on "normally". E.g. I can't actually se if any programs does not function properly but this error messages are quite anoying.

Firmware: CXC162037 R9C001

After power on (10-20 minutes) the USB connection symbol suddenly appears on the screen and asks me to select between "Fast..." and "Normal..." connection type although no USB device has been connected with the phone.

Interesting that this device is now out in the real world. Or do you guys have pre-production units?

That confused me as well but Expansys have them in stock here
So I guess they are the real thing.

Yep, mine is an Expansys full production version. Pretty nice phone apart from the few bugs.

Another one - when enabling automatic (timed) email retrieval, you then can't send emails unless you enable SMTP authentication, you get a "bad return address" error.

No problems at all with my O2 supplied W950.

FW: Organiser R1B01

Sound reproduction is staggering when used with the DS970 😊

PDA: CXC162088 R1B01

Pay Monthly Contract with O2

1. USB Fast file transfer doesn't work on two different Windows XP SP2 computers, one a brand new fresh install (a Compaq PC). Neither PC registers a device connection whenever the phone connects in "fast file transfer" mode, data can only be transferred in "Normal" mode. It makes no difference when using USB1 or USB2 ports. "Normal" mode equates to approximately 100KB/s transfer speed, making music transfer very, very painful.

2. Bluetooth - Nokia 770 will connect once, then 770 needs to be rebooted before a second connection can be established. 770 had problems (timeouts) pairing with the W950i as well. Could be a Nokia 770 problem, but this device worked flawlessly with a SE T610.

3. Contact manager is flakey - if I choose Groups view, when I enter contact manager it displays the groups for a few seconds then switches automatically to "All" view.

I think I must have the most unusable W950i out there at the moment. Fair enough it's a pre-release model (actually used in the new TV ad on air at the moment) but seems to share firmware versions with a lot of supposedly 'Released' handsets. Have had it nearly 3 months now - using it on O2 but it's SIM free.

As SuperSwede I get the following 2 errors at power up:

Application: Main/Reason code: KERN-EXEC/Reason number: 0
Application: !MIDP2.SystemAMS.Installer/Reason code: DBMS-Table/Reason number: 11

But then, depending on day of the week and wind direction, I have experienced:

CALLS: Unable to answer calls via screen, keypad, wired headset or DS970 BT headset. (Phone battery has to be removed to stop ringing - even if caller has hung up!) I can usually tell I won't be able to answer without touching the phone as contacts from SIM come up as number rather than name. Frequency - every 2nd or 3rd call (I can get about 50 calls a day in my job).

WALKMAN: Phone freezes between tracks on playback to DS970. Seems to be particular tracks that do it but tracks from the same album (ie: encoded and transferred identically) play fine. Maybe my W950i is trying to say something about my taste in music. Again - battery out to reset phone. Frequency - once a day (in an hour of commute listening).

FILE MANAGER: Certain albums deleted from /music memory still appear in album listing despite having reformatted memory. Can't get rid of these no matter what I try.

IMAGES: Certain JPG images won't display in Wallpaper view (appear as broken icon) but will sometimes work if copied to phone memory. Using images as wallpaper or screensaver seems to increase likelihood of phone crash so I've stopped doing it.

OTHER: Too many glitches to mention but general seemingly random freezing without notice every hour or so of use. Hard to tell phone frozen until you try to use it or someone tries to ring it. And I lost a stylus already - thankfully nearly identical replacement found on eBay for 99p.

But you know what, I still love this phone. Once a FW update comes I'm hoping I'll be sorted - if not I'll have to send it back to be flashed but it's still amazing.

Oh - and Master Reset crashes too!!! Can't even wipe the bloody thing and start again.!!

I found out that the application errors at start-up was (partially) caused by my installed Exchange ActiveSync Client. But only partially since I had a similar error message "out-of-the-box". Anyway, I perfomed a complete format of the internal drive (I did NOT use the option "Master reset", to "weak", but the "Format internal disk" option available from within "Service Menus" (access service menus by typing this when on std-by screen):
*
jog dial up
*
jog dial down
jog dial down
*
jog dial down
*

NOTE!! This will complete remove all installed things on the device, this includes languages (excluding English), themes, ringtones, e.g. complete sets the device to factory defaults.

The positive thing is that my device now works fine. The "..!MIDP2..." error is a Java-error. After format and again having installed the ActiveSync client the problem reoccured. I think it's caused by the security policy used by our Exchange 2007 (E12) which enables "inactivity lock" on the device.
What I did: Terminated the "SyncScheduler" task using "Swiss Manager" (SyncScheduler is not visible using the included "task manager"😉. Unchecked the "Inactivity lock". Restart device. All now works fine!! No error messages!!

SuperSwede, you are indeed quite bloody Super.

Just jogged through your instructions and I have a new phone!!

No start up errors. Seemingly running menus a lot faster. Quadrapop works! Nightclub Manager has appeared! Formatted flash drive and no more sticking albums I'd previously deleted.

I'm off to fill it full of media files now to test it proper and I'll report back tomorrow on the answering crash issues but I'm very hopeful.

I will pass this on little 'hack' on wherever I have the chance.

Many many thanks indeed.

Ed

Turn off "Transitions" to make system respond more quickly on menu selections (Control panel \ Device \ Transitions)

Which version of PC Suite do you use? If it's 1.2.15 pls review http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/forum//forum/thread/53868/, e.g. A LOT of people have connection problems when using this version of PC Suite. I had no problems until I upgrade to this one...

Hi superswede - yes, it is 1.2.15. You seem to have the exact opposite problem to me, as I can connect to a PC in "normal" mode OK (if you can call 100KB/s transfer speed "ok"!) but I've had absolutely no luck getting a PC to register a "Fast file transfer" connection - it's as if the phone is not plugged into the PC, but the phone has registered the PC connection correctly, grrrr! 😞

I've also not had any problems with mRouter.

I've emailed SE (via the SE support web site) asking about the problem I'm having but haven't yet received a reply (anyone know how good they are at replying?)

I'm beginning to think the phone is defective as it's the same behaviour on two different PCs, or it could be the firmware in the W950i. This is a major flaw with this phone - transferring 3GB of music in "normal" mode took almost 12 hours, and this transfer mode doesn't appear able to handle multiple directory levels either!

For example, if I have two albums for the same artist in this structure:

Chicane
|
+---- Behind The Sun
|
+---- Far From the Maddening Crowds

When I copy the "Chicane" directory to \Music on the phone, I end up with:

Chicane
|
+---- Behind The Sun
|
+---- Behind The SunFar From the Maddening Crowds

Total carp!

I don't think you're problem is related to the phone (e.g. defective ph.), I still beleave it's related to the 1.2.15 version of PC Suite.
You're using the software that came on CD with the phone or have you upgraded (e.g. do you have another version available on CD that you can try with..)?

I've tried 1.2.15 (from the SE website) and 1.2.14 (from the CD that came with the phone). I haven't been able to find any other versions so far. I'm going to take my phone over to my brothers and try it on his NForce3 motherboard (having failed to get it working on an NForce2 and Compaq motherboard and VIA chipset add-in card).

Have just got back from a friend where we installed 1.2.15 on a Dell/Intel based motherboard and once again Fast Transfer fails to work - it's as if the phone isn't plugged in... will get hold of a new cable, and if that doesn't help the phone is going back to O2 as defective... 😞

New cable has arrived - hasn't made any difference, on the bright side I've now got a spare data/charging cable! 😊

I contacted SE customer support and they were unable to get the phone working, so we have now agreed it's knackered and O2 will be sending me a new phone, should have it sometime next week. Will update with any progress! 😊

1. I had this phone for a week now, and in two occasions (UMTS) Network Connection was lost. Changing to Manual just reported: No Network Available and I haven't found any other way to recover apart than restarting the phone!

2. Not all Cover Arts appear (I'm using a Mac and iTunes, but I don't think that's the reason)

3. Music Player crashes when attempting to browse my Music in Album or Artist view (I think it's related to problem 1)

4. If battery drains 'till phone auto power-off, after restart I receive *some* SMSs with nonsense text

I bought the phone on eBay, from a German seller, because here in Italy it will (someday: nobody knows when!) only be available from TIM and... 1) I am not a TIM customer, 2) I hate logos 😉

Firmware is... how do I find firmware version?

I do also have this problem but I believe that prob #3 is related to #2.

pl_svn wrote:Firmware is... how do I find firmware version?

Select "More > Status" when in main menu. From what I understand Firmware = "Organizer". I think CXC 162088 R1B01 is the latest. You can have another firmware if it's a "branded" model.

superswede wrote:I do also have this problem but I believe that prob #3 is related to #2.

... sorry: I changed problems order and forgot to correct! #_#

Thank you, superswede 😊

So... it's:
Phone: CXC 162037 R9C001
Bluetooth: CXC 162058 R3A01
Organizer: CXC 162088 R1B01
CDA: CDA 162017/32 R2A03 (wat's this one?)

It's an *unbranded* model: as I stated in my previous post, in Italy it *will* only be available from TIM (*not* my service provider) so I bought it, on ebay, from a German seller.

In the next couple of days I'll try to bring it to SE assistance to see if there's a new firmware availaible: I can live (for a few weeks 😉 without Cover Arts but not with Network Connections drops. Hey: isn't it supposed to be "also" a phone? 😉

1) Remote syncronisation doesn't work - fails to connect to remote server but doesn't display anything more useful than "Failed"

2) Phone crashes randomly - locks up and battery out is the only way to refresh

3) Song stuck playing - had to turn off the phone to get back into the walkman!

You'll need to give us more information before anyone can help you.

Yes, but we also need more precise descriptions of when and how your problems were found. In order to try evaluating or fixing a problem, we need to be able to re-create it.

ok - I'll try my best

1) Remote syncronisation doesn't work - fails to connect to remote server but doesn't display anything more useful than "Failed"

Set up an account with www.mobical.net. This worked fine with my old phone and I know it works fine for other users of w950i's. I spoke to mobical and they tell me a session is never established when I run remote synchronisation. On the phone I see, "Connecting" then "Connected" then "Failed" - nothing more useful... if only there was some kind of log to look at 😞

2) Phone crashes randomly - locks up and battery out is the only way to refresh

This has happened in a number of ways, not such a big issue as the above for the moment - will post exact details next time it happens.

3) Song stuck playing - had to turn off the phone to get back into the walkman!

Was listening to a song, switched to main menu to check some settings (didn't actually change anything). TThen clicked the wlkman button and it hangs. Can't get into the walkman whatever I do. Song is still playing but I can't stop through phone ui or using attached remote control. Again - will try and post more exact details next time it happens

thanks all for any ideas (fyi - I reformatted the disk and reset up my phone but made no difference).

... so I went to SE assistance, yesterday. The latest available firmware was installed and... you guess? It's exactly the same that was factory installed.

All the problems with Music Player still are there. The other two I was reporting... I'll tell you next time (hopefully *if*) they arise again.

Anyway... at SE they told me that, to identify firmware versions, they *only* look at the last part of line "Phone", the one that says e.g. R9C001 (this is the latest).

Anyone who has an earlier version can upgrade, all the others... have to wait for SE to release next bug fix 😞

... oh, btw... mine was the first and only w950 the had seen, so far, in the real world 😉

When I set my W950i to Normal mode, I get nothing but a yellow exclamation mark next to 'W950i' in the USB Controllers list in control panel device manager (says drivers not installed), when I RIGHT-CLICK and select UPDATE DRIVER, it finds the driver from the CD and while installing the drivers it says 'sony ericsson composite device' but then says 'CANNOT INSTALL THIS HARDWARE - AN ERROR OCCURRED DURING THE INSTALLATION, THE SYSTEM CANNOT FIND THE FILE SPECIFIED, CLICK FINISH TO CLOSE THE WIZARD'

When I set my W950i to FAST FILE TRANSFER mode, the W950i is removed from the USB Controllers list (along with the yellow exclamation mark!) and the list is closed.

Without the Normal Mode I cannot update my phone using the SE Update Service

My FAST FILE TRANSFER mode is working fine! if anyone's having prbs with FFT, I'd suggest you double-check your USB 2 drivers are installed properly

I was using PC Suite v1.2.14 but upgraded to v1.2.15 - problem persists

I'm on O2 UK, firmware below. . .

PHONE : CXC162037 R9C001
BLUETOOTH: CXC162058 R3A01
ORGANISER: CXC162088 R1B01
CDA: CDA162017/8 R1A08

TicTac - I've been unsucessful getting Fast File Transfer mode to work on 3 PCs (1x NVidia NForce2 chipset, 1x Intel chipset in a Dell Optiplex GX280, 1x VIA chipset add-in board). The Intel and & Via PCs were rebuilt from scratch using a slipstreamed version of Windows XP SP2 - no other software was installed other than the SE PC Suite and all updates from MS, yet they still wouldn't work! All yellow exclamation marks have been resolved automatically once the drivers are installed, I've used both 1.2.14 and 1.2.15. Nothing I've tried (including all suggestions from SE customer support) has made any difference - the PCs just do not "see" my phone when it is connected in FFT mode (works fine in "Normal" mode).

I'm now waiting for O2 to send me a replacement phone.
