Nokia has commissioned a survey by Nielsen Entertainment which interviewed 1800 users of mobile phone games from China, Germany, India, Spain, Thailand and the United States. The results are available in a press release and suggest that people will enjoy using Nokia's Next Generation gaming platform which is due for launch in the first half of 2007. Perhaps the most interesting is the average gaming session length: 28 minutes, which is far longer than is usually thought the case on phone games, and implies that the average phone gamer plays with as much dedication as they would on a portable console.

It looks like the people taking part in this survey are indeed _gamers_, and probably represent a very small portion of the user base of mobile phones. That gamers play more games than non-gamers shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. 😊

The survey isn't saying gamers play more games than non-gamers, they didn't even talk to non-gamers so it can't say anything about them.

Yes, gamers are a fraction of the userbase of mobile phones, but phones sell approaching 1 billion units a year and rising. Even if only 5% of phones are bought by gamers then that's 50 million phones bought by phone gamers every year, more than the annual sales of all games consoles (portable and non-portable) put together. Phone gaming has possibly already got biggest gaming userbase in the world, and it's getting bigger all the time.

The point of the survey is to see what KIND of games phone gamers like, and the surprises of the survey are that they enjoy playing longer sessions (half an hour on average, so many must play for much longer) and that they enjoy playing multiplayer games, both of which would favour the platform that Nokia's launching in 2007. Also interesting was when the gamers compared cutting edge Java to Nokia's Next Gen games, most of them preferred the Next Gen games.

I used to play while sitting on the crapper taking a big dump. I guess used to be about 15 minutes, seemingly below the average.
