The Nokia N95 - Your Questions Answered!

27 replies · 8,079 views · Started 26 January 2007

Since his preview of the Nokia N95 mid week, you've all been bombarding Rafe with questions, some in the forums and some by email. In 'Your questions answered' Rafe attempts to answer them all and makes sure you're fully informed about this latest 'multimedia computer' from Nokia.

Read on in the full article.

Well, thanks in the first place! 😊

One thing i learned is the possibility (finally) for us to choose the font size. You mentioned 3 but only showed us 2 screens... any chance of seeing the one missing?

Another font related thing is, that it's pity that with smaller font you can't see more lines. The message app example you gave is good.

The two shown are the smallest and the largest, the middle one is the normal one and is somewhere between those two.

Update:

here you go.

Thanks. Well they could easily put an extra line in the smallest font screen... sent messages could be there then!

Excellent article!

Btw, wonder if in the near future (not specific to N95 but for any phone with WiFI) it will be possible to make WiFi/VoIP video calls with Skype or with the enbedded VoIP application? That would be the killer app for me, living abroad with family and friends in another country.

Hi, I have some questions too:

What are the new apps added in FP1?

Is it possible to charge the battery over USB?

Does it come with Gizmo VoIP?

SIP is a standard feature in Feature Pack 1.

This means it is already possible to make phone calls over WiFi using SIP with this phone. Indeed I've got Truphone working on the N95. The N95 includes a Internet Call application that lets you set the phone to default to using SIP calls when it is successfully registered with a SIP service (i.e. if you press dial from say contacts it will use the VOIP service, not the cellular and if your not registered [in range of home WiFi] then it will use cellular). Will try and cover this in more detail in a few days.

Skype is not currently possibly. Third parties like Fring may support it. It would work using iSkoot (as on 3's X-Series) too.

No you can't charge over USB (a shame IMHO)

It doesn't come configured with Gizmo, but it is Gizmo compatiable as it has support for SIP.

New apps in FP 1 - I'm not sure there are any specific to FP 1. There are new apps as has been mentioned previously (e.g. Video service, Internet calls, Welcome, etc etc.) but some of these are available as addons for previous phones or have been seen before.

Good that you made a topic to organize all the question and answers, is it possible to add the new q&a to the topic every time. It is more clear then the forum posts

Please make a good test with the battery. How much does it last? and iwould kindly ask you to be as specific as possible

Does the N95 support Universal Plug and Play like the N80 does? This is really amazing technology - althought I am not to sure how its market penetration is. For that matter - can I get UPNP on other S60 devices?

viipottaja wrote:Rafe, thanks, can you just clarify, can you also do _video_ calling with the VoIP?

Ah sorry did not read you original question carefully enough. I believe it is voice only (I've not done any video stuff over SIP myself, so I don't know much about it - sorry).

Thanks for the answers - really helpful! Another quick question: Does the N95 feature camera feature any kind of image stabilization?

Yes I'll be updating the asked questions page and notifying of the update via the forum. It seems to be the best way to keep the information in one place and easy to follow. I'll mark new questions as well.

I'm not answering the second round of questions. Update later today I hope.

I'd like to congratulate you on an exellent article. What I'd like to know is, what games, if any, are preloaded on it and have Nokia finally gone back to an alarm that you don't need to set everyday?

I have a few more questions after reading what seems like thousands of articles on this new device.

Can you make a phone call while using the GPS, or is the GPS dependent on your data connection (EDGE or 3G)?

You mentioned that there were options for paying for the turn-by-turn voice notifications in increments of days all the way up to one year. What are the prices for these timeframes?

Has the new web browser gone through any changes to make it less RAM-intensive? Is it possible to run other applications with similar demand on RAM simultaneously?

Thank you very much for your compiled FAQ. I've found it very informative. I look forward to seeing the answers to these questions added to it in time. 😉

I was able to run Gallery and Web simultaneously.

Thank you for answering my questions! I quoted this answer because it made me giggle with silly joy. I can determine whether or not my day is going to be good or not if the Web app closes when I send a text message on my N73. It sounds like every day will be a good day with the N95!

Great article Rafe.

One quick question: the reception on my N80 stinks. Is the N95 any better?

Is the positioning application included with Maps or do you have to pay for it? Is it included in the S60 3rd edition? Thanks.

How's the sound quality on headphones? Is it like on other s60 3rd edition phones or there is a chance to compare it to the N91?

if you have a gps reciever you don't have to pay for the so called "u-turn" function, so why if you buy the n95 you have to pay for this extra function? what's the difference between n95's integrated gps and external gps? thanks

It has never been possible in the past, so it is likely it won't be possible now, either.

In other words, if you want an S60 3rd Ed. FP1 based device, you have to buy one with it from the beginning.
