Ok here's a debate that might rage on for a bit: Does sleep mode actually make the battery last longer? I'm going to try summat scientific, but thought I'd get your views first.
Without any hard eveidence I'd say it doesn't make a difference. I usually get 1 or 2 days regardless of whether my phone naps or not.
(Also I'm taking bets on who replies first - Cash or Kontranband) 😉
It would make some sense that lowering the lights saves energy!!
And who did you bet on? 😉
Technically I know it should make some difference, it's just I've never noticed it. Whether that's because I use it more on the days I've set it to sleep I don't know. Just wondering what everyone else has found.
I couldn't possibly reveal who I bet on, I don't want to upset Cash!
(Sorry Cash!)
haha,
I guess it would also depend on how you have your phone config'd.
If, say for example... you had your backlight jammed up to full brightness, you'd probably notice more benefit from sleep mode... its pretty hard to do a true test tho... cause just leaving a phone sitting there doing nothing is not a real test.
Plus, if you try to test in real world scenarios, you cant guarentee that the calls you receive on one day are going to be the same length next time you do the comparison test. You get me?
Yeah, but if use wifi or voip consistently for the test, I usually send + receive the same amounts of messages/calls each day so that's about as scientific as I can get. I'm not sacrificing the features for the sake of battery life - otherwise what's the point in having them? So if I try and standardise use I can see if sleep mode is worth putting on or not (that blue light is annoying and the standby clock screen is handy).
If I don't use wifi, or voip or the mp3 player I might as well go and get me a 3210!
Having said all that, if I just left in offline for the test I'd still know whether sleep mode improves battery life - if it improves it lots in offline, then hypothetically it should extend it for daily use. Shouldn't it?:con?

Yup!!
But if you want to leave the phone on in VoIP mode I hope your battery lasts longer than mine!
Good point - first time I got voip I left it registered all night - when I woke up the battery meter has past 0 bars and was still heading downwards!
Might turn VOIP off for the test then.
Out of interest, do you use sleep mode or not?
yeah, I use sleep mode... power time out is on 1 min, light t.o. is on 10 secs, and the light sensor is on min.
Same setup here - great minds and all that.
I'll start the test when my current charge has gone (although it's doing well - 6 hour charge last night, about 30 texts today, 30 minutes of calls, 1 VOIP call, a bit of wifi and still full bars! I never used to get such mileage out of the battery - I was a skeptic but I'm a "condition your battery" convert! Saying that I still expect it to drop a random 3 or 4 bars any minute now...)

Sleep mode does make a huge difference to battery life, its been discussed here many times and tests have been made by members of this forum, 😊..
In fact its the single biggest thing you can do to extend your battery life..

you asked on one of the occasions I wasn't near my computer...otherwise I would have been first 😊 😊 😊 ... well maybe 😊..Kontraband is on the ball ).
I think it's in the forum's best interests to keep you two in healthy competition - I have got to thank you both for all your helpful and detailed posts. Without you two I'd have killed this phone months ago!!!
I didn't notice that big a difference with the sleep mode before, but I did only have it on when I first got the phone so maybe I was playing with my new toy a bit too much
Cheers Cash
Im drying out from last night... so starting at my screen is kinda soothing! 😉

No probs,
yes it was the same when I had the phone, constant playing so a difference is not really noticeable, its just in normal everyday use that you notice the difference, mine lasts all day, then I have to charge when I go to bed, if I didnt have sleep mode on it would be dead at about 9 or 10 which is pretty poor.....so those few extra hours are actually quite important.
having said that ..I have had wifi on all day since 10am connected to truphone and fring, and I still have 4 bars left on the display ....its kind of strange.
I have noticed a big increase in battery power since I have been using a third party charger the last 2 weeks because my nokia one broke..

yeah, competition is good.. 😊 Glad I/we could help tho and your happier with your phone now. :icon14:
Yeah you two have been invaluable, I'm sure that everyone in the forum would agree that without you two the forum would not be such a helpful and friendly place!
Cash I'm intrigued by your third party charger. Roughly how much difference does it make? Which brand charger did you buy? I'm desperate to get any more life out of this anaemic battery!!
theres been a few comments about OEM chargers. I have one and it has made some difference in how long the battery holds its charge, but I dont think I'm seeing as many benefits as Cash. Saying that however, it was charged yesterday lunchtime, has been used for about 30mins of calls and its still on full power.
I do notice tho, that it can be on full power and then I'll use it and it will drop 2 - 3 bars very quickly rather than at a regular pace.
I was on full bars last night, this morning just one bar! Saying that I did use wireless to check my emails from bed last night (how cool is that?!) and music player for about an hour.
Don't think the battery level display is particularly accurate.
benj wrote: Saying that I did use wireless to check my emails from bed last night (how cool is that?!)
hahah yeah, its all good!!
Wireless use does really drain the battery the most I feel. Although BT and Wireless run on the same frequencies, and BT uses less battery than wifi, it is possible to reconfigure BT to allow it to work the way as wifi does, you just wouldnt get a much movement away from the source as you would with a dedicated wifi system . So, yes, it would work, no it wouldnt be AS good but yeah, your battery would propably last longer 😎
kontraband wrote:it is possible to reconfigure BT to allow it to work the way as wifi does, you just wouldnt get a much movement away from the source as you would with a dedicated wifi system
Eh? I'm lost. I usually turn off BT and WiFi unless I'm using them. I turned WiFi on for about 15 mins to check my emails online (yeah I have set up my IMAP in messaging but I have an online spam filter on my email which means I need to maintain my permissions every so often). Why and how would I set up my BT to work like WiFi?
sorry, didnt mean to confuse the issue...
you cant easily choose an option on the N80 to use BT as Wifi, Im just saying that it would be possible, should you ever have a load of spare time and a desire to get your hands dirty! 😉
The why, is in my post above. 😊
I needed to change my pants when I upgraded to IE - don't think I've got the minerals to get my hands much dirtier than that!

Saying that (and this is my problem, I can't help experimenting - that's how come I had IE before I even knew the differences!), what do you mean by getting my hands dirty? Do you mean taking the phone apart? Or just mucking about with router/phone settings?
no... not taking apart... not that dirty 😉
Oh ok, maybe I do have the minerals then!
Is there a thread on it? (I realise I've kinda wandered off topic on this thread) Or can you point me in the right direction to do some research?
no thread on here that I know of... Im just looking for the info I read this weekend.
kontraband wrote:no thread on here that I know of... Im just looking for the info I read this weekend.
Cheers pal, you're an absolute legend.
ok, I can't find the exact pages I looked at... so maybe you can google it yourself...
of course your other option is to use BT to connect via the PC, rather than tweeking the script for the bluetooth module to go into wifi.
I'll keep looking during the day... see if I can find the informative page I read.
connecting via BT tho on an N80 and having to sit within 10 meters of the PC would, having a wifi capable device, be pretty pointless! 😉
