Hello everyone -- after much struggling and browsing around, I have acquired an N80. I don't have previous experience with S60 phones, so please excuse me if this is something trivial. My previous experience is with SE phones, so if anyone can give me the SE equivalent commands I would very much appreciate it.
The first thing I did was to check with Nokia if I have the latest firmware, and I do.
1. Is there some application/setting that will allow me to see any new SMS messages in the standby screen? (Where it now says 'No cal. entries for today'😉.
2. How can I setup a recurring alarm?
3. I enabled 'predictive text'; which I think is the same thing as T9. How do you change the word that it guesses? Example -- to type 'me' I hit 6 and then 3, but it puts 'of' of the screen -- normally I hit the down key on the joystick and it gives me a set of words to pick. Similarly, how to get it to change the punctuation symbol? I hit 1 to put a question mark, but it put a period (.) Upon hitting . again, it put another period, then the third time a : and then the fourth time a ) with the word being hello..😊 instead of hello?
4. Is there a key combination that I can hit with the phone in compact mode (I mean -- with the keypad not showing) to lock the keys? Now I am opening the slider and then closing it to make sure its keylocked. I noticed there is a freeware app that does automatic key locking, but is there another way?
Thanks, I'm loving the phone 😊 I got it for its WiFi -- upgraded from a K800.
Follow up question -- after installing Nokia PC Suite on my machine and then having it install some software on my phone, I get the error 'Certificate is not valid or Phone's date is not valid' (or something like that, sorry -- the error went away as I was typing it).

Something like "Certificate Error contact application supplier" ?
If this is what shows then you have to disable the certificate signed security option. Go to App.Mangr, open 'options' and click 'settings' ;change the first field there to 'All' (to allow all applications that S6o 3.0 compatible.) and the second field to 'off' (so it doesn't have to go online to verify the certificate supplier).

For Q1. The sms stuff ,go to 'settings' -'phone settings'-'stand by mode'-'Active standby mailbox' -change the field there to 'Inbox'.
That should work?
For Q2. The recurring alarm.
You can Open the built-in phone calendar application. Open the day you want to set the alarm, click on 'options'- 'New Entry' ,since its for alarm you can click on 'meeting'.. fill in the various fields then where it says 'alarm' -change it to on .,and where it says 'repeat' -select how you want it to be repeated. After everything click 'done' (your right soft key)

Q3. The T9 stuff.
To change the word it guesses, press the '#-key' until the 'abc' sign (near the top of the screen) changes to just the 'pencil& abc' (and not the two strait lines-pencil&abc sign)
you can now edit the words. If you want to change back to T9 just press the '#-key' again till the 'pencil-abc' sign changes back to 'Two strait lines-pencil&abc'.
Alternatively, when in T9 mode you can press the 'pencil-key' it will bring up a list of options one of which has the 'predictive text' option and a tiny arrow pointing to the right, tilt your joystick to the right and you have the options of 'Insert word' or 'off' -'insert word allows you to insert your own word (similar to editing) ,while 'off' switches off the predictive text (so you can then edit the words it guesses or insert your own words)
The question on symbols. To get 'symbols' press the "*+ key" ;this brings out a list of symbols you can choose from.

Q4. The keylocking prob.
There is another way but you'll constantly need your 'phone lock code' to unlock the phone when ever its locked.
Go to 'settings' -' security' - 'phone and sim' ,move to the field that says 'Autolock period' ,change this field to 'User defined' ,you can then specify the time taken for the keypads to lock. Though you'll need your 'phone lock code' everytime to unlock the keypads.

Ah, I think I didn't explain the problem correctly. That was not the error, and I wasn't trying to install any third party application. When I installed PC Suite, when it asked me to connect the phone, then I got a prompt saying that PC Suite needs to install some compatibility applications onto your phone (sorry, trying to remember as best). Then on the phone I got a prompt to install something like MMSSync (or something similar). When I clicked OK, it then gave me the error message with a red ! and I couldn't do anything (there was no action defined for the soft keys).
However, the phone seems to work okay with PC Suite? I synchronized my contacts from Outlook (about the only thing I needed to do).
I am having some problems with your other suggestion.
For Q1. The sms stuff ,go to 'settings' -'phone settings'-'stand by mode'-'Active standby mailbox' -change the field there to 'Inbox'.
That should work?
Here are the steps I followed (from standby screen):
1. Menu key
2. Tools
3. Settings
4. Phone (here I see General, Standby Mode, Display)
5. Standby Mode
Here I see:
Active Standby (which is on)
Left selection key - Messaging
Right selection key - Gallery
Active Standby apps. -- when I click on this, I get the options to change the top 6 shortcuts.
Can you tell me what I'm doing wrong here?
As for your second suggestion on the alarm; this really doesn't work for me since I need to have the alarm not daily, but only on certain days and to repeat indefinitely ... any other ideas?
Thanks 😊

For the sms stuf.
Isnt there any options like 'Active standby mailbox' ? if there isnt try creating a default mailbox in the messages section then try going back to standby mode settings and check.
For the calendar stuff.
I have only an idea,.
You could create an alarm,in the calendar 'meetings' option, for each of the days you want& in an in the field of repeat..make it 'weekly'.So that every week on that day&time the alarm rings .Then you can change the End date to 12/31/2007 (end of this year) to make it look indefinite.
No, there isn't any option like that, I looked everywhere.
Also, I can't figure out how to set a default mailbox? I have an IMAP account in addition to the SMS/MMS account from my provider.
My firmware is:
4.0632.0.38
13-10-2006

well i use an E70 ..maybe thats why.
All the options i wrote are here and it works fine.
There must be a way to do it for n80.
N80 and other S60v3 FP0 N-series phones) don't have this customizing option. Only on E-series.
Is there a recommended third party tool that does this?
Third party tools can't do this. The only app that puts something there is Nokia's own WLAN Wizard.
