Using Fring on WLAN

6 replies · 2,892 views · Started 24 April 2007

Hello all.

Having been duped by Vodafone into buying a phone with reduced fuctionality (no truphone!!!) so i am using a program called fring. I do really like this clever little program but i cant seem to get it to work over WLAN. It will connect fine using GPRS or 3G, but when i tell it to use WLAN it come up with a msg say 'Connection failed, scan for access points?'

This is on my home network that works fine for the internet.

Any help would be super!

thanks alot

Steve

hey, shooting in the dark but can you connect using the web browser when your on the wireless lan?

if not - need to check your settings. If you can - try defining your IP address settings manually and make sure you enter your default gateway correctly and the dns settings also

On thing I'd forgotten about when setting up my wireless lan was only allowing certain MAC addresses to connect to the network, so I could see it ok and try to join it, but joining always failed. I had to allow my phone's MAC address on the router to get past that stage. Could be something similar...?

If you think this is it, you can check your MAC address with the catchly little command at the phone/idle screen: *#62209526#

Hi, thanx for the replies.

I have tried to connect on two networks, my network at home (this uses MAC addressing but i have already set it up and it working fine) and the network at work which just has a WEP key. I can browse the internet on both network using WLAN with no problems. Both network use DHCP so i cant assign it an IP address.

Thanks again

If it IS defined then it ought to appear in your connection list .. fring .. options / settings /change connection .. if you cancel it will come up with "failed, go to automatic search for access points"

but the secret is to define your access point

report back if that doesn't help

Thanks for the reply, it is defined as an access point. When i start Fring up it gathers all my contacts using GPRS, when i change connection to the WLAN i get 'Failed, go to automatic search for access points'. If i select no it just reconnects using GPRS.
