What changes have you noticed in firmware V11.0.026

Ive seen conflicting statements of whats changed and been updated in this firmware on different forums and websites?

What have you noticed different and does anyone have the official changelog?

i've not really noticed much at all, still seems flaky to me. haven't had it running long enough to see if there are any battery life improvements.

Is this official yet as the software updater on the Nokia website reckons my phone is up to date and there are no updates available?

Not sure if it's only the SIM free generic firmware that's available at the moment, the networks have to make their branded versions available to Nokia to put on NSU. Is your phone a Vodafone or Orange phone?

- the camera is much faster in focusing and actually taking the picture.
- the pictures themselves are better.
- the gps is more responsive and stable.
- the phone is faster in menus
- more to come

Yeah, GPS is getting a fix much faster now and WiFi now works with my Linksys WRT300N Wireless router without disconnecting every 10 seconds, Yay!

First let me say upgrading is well worth it!

Next let me advise people - be prepared to re-install many of your applications.
Although the backup/restore will give you back your basic settings/wallpapers etc be prepared to spend time removing apps (search functions for places you're never going to visit etc) and reinstalling those apps you've come to rely on.

Speed is improved in just about every application I've tried.
GPS seems to connect faster.

I've had 3 or 4 apps open at once without issue.
😊

It's a T-Mobile phone?

I'm sure I read somewhere that even though the T-Mobile phones have no branding the product code is different to the SIM free phone's with a EURO1 product code.

Might be that the operator still has to give the OK for the firmware to be released for a certain product code? Anyone?

I have a T-mobile N95 which I reflashed to EURO1 generic firmware with Phoenix. I upgraded it to 11.0.025 yesterday (EURO1) but havent seen any noticable difference.
I was hoping the Wifi would be more sensitive. I have real problems with the Wifi being there for the N95 and then disappearing. It causes havoc to Fring. When its there it reports 85% signal strength, but then disappears and so disconnects Fring. Using Fring through the T-mobile access point (3G) everything works fine. (SIP, MSN Skype etc) and stays connected fine. Its a Netgear 824 BTW.

The T-mobile 95's do have a different product code to the SIM free one, but can easily be changed with NSS. Only thing I could see which was missing from the T-mobile firmware with the IM client, but there may have been more.

Let your access point do the hard work. If you require fring - then disable power saving. by turning the tx power down you'll save enough to remain connected.
10mW is fine .. you could try 4. 😊

Previously my phone would reboot if I tried to cancel at the point when Profimail was establishing a data connection - now seems to be fixed 😊

Now all they need to add is dirrect streaming over uPnP and the N95 would be the killer phone Nokia seem to make out it is. (well that, and gapless playback which the lame Nokia music player really need's IMO).

PS, can anyone tell me, or estimate, what the size of the firmware file is? Would it be possible over a dial-up connection?

It's almost 120MB - suspect thats too much for dialup unless you're very patient!

Thanks for the tip. I hadnt thought that the power saving stuff would be chopping the Wifi if I was using it, but now you have mentioned it it makes sense what Im seeing. I'll give it a go.

I was reluctant to keep using the T-mobile Access Point when I was at home cos I dont know how hot they are on their fair use and since I havent paid for Web n Walk Plus or Max, I shouldnt really be using SIP or MSN.

One other thing, I noticed I couldnt use the standard TM access point definition with SIP & MSN (web still worked) after I put the generic fw on. Luckily I checked, before I upgraded and the access point definition after the upgrade has a user defined as 'user' changing this to 'T-mobile' then allowed me use SIP & MSN again.

when i used to take close-up photo's in the dark the flash would be too bright and i'd just get a white image where the lens had been blinded by the intensity of the light, since upgrading the firmware this does not happen. Photo's are less blurred now too in general.

I have not updated my firmware yet, simply because my phone has performed great from the start. GPS always gets 5 satelites on first attempt after 10 seconds, picture quality has been great, etc. Would you recommend I update?

The only reason I am thinking about it is because I have an Orange UK phone so perhaps the generic would be better?

Psyxologos wrote:GPS always gets 5 satelites on first attempt after 10 seconds

Oh come one now, that's not even possible with the latest super expensive professional GPS devices.

But if you have no problems, then why fix whats not broke?

Psyxologos wrote:GPS always gets 5 satelites on first attempt after 10 seconds

Amazing as the N95 has a SiRF II chipset in it and from a warm start it takes SiRF II a minimum of 38 seconds. The N95 won't hot start, from what I can tell it completely shuts down the GPS subsystem when you exit the GPS application which then prevents a hot start.

Saying that, in ideal conditions SiRF II will do a hot start in 8 seconds, but that depends on it holding recent fix data in it's memory and as I said above when you exit GPS it shuts down the chipset.

I am not kidding you. Seriously. Five bars within 10-20 secs (ok, 10 is the fastest and not the norm). I live in the Isle of Wight, UK, and there are no tall buildings etc where I live (in a farm) so I get a clear view of the sky. I only use the GPS application to run my battery down when it is on one bar (as I want to fully empty it and then fully charge) as I am still waiting for my microSD from HK so I can do some serious testing.

Once again, I am 100% honest, GPS works quicly and has a strong signal. Same with camera. Superb quality pics. The only thing is the speed in the multimedia gallery, but I think i can live with it!

Psyxologos, no one is calling you a liar mate. But seriously, thats impossible from a cold start (which is what a 'first attempt' is), regardless of what part of the world or conditions you are in. I have been using GPS systems for years.

Maybe a lucky warm start, mine can do that in about 20 seconds sometimes, but not a cold start.

Oh, and the type of bettery the N95, and most phones use, don't need to be completely discharged. They don't suffer the memory effect of older batteries, although they will degrade over time.

No problem mate, I just wanted to explain where I am standing on this. The only reason I am running the battery down is because I am only on my 3rd and 4th recharge, and I ussualy do this for about 7 or 8 charging sessions. I have found this helps with the battery life. I got my phone on the 18th of April and with moderate use (i.e I do not play with the phone constantly, only first couple of days I overdid it; I make about 45 mins calls daily, send and receive 4-5 SMS; listen to radio for 20 mins etc) I am on my 4th (I think it is 4th, it might be my 3rd) recharge. Anyway, thank you both for your feedback!

Unless the GPS subsystem isn't being shutdown and it is doing a warm/hot start...

Firmware rev 11.0.025 and above now enables ondevice debugging so I might have a chance to snoop around to see what's going on...

Will a T-Mobile store upgrade the firmware when its released properly?

My GPS only seemed to work once, whenever i put it on now it goes to the co ordinates of where I was when it worked the satalite logo on the bottom right looks like no connection etc this is very annoying!

What I've noticed after updating to 11.0.026 ?

1. Webbrowser can finally load the images of also big webpages. Sometimes the problems persist though.
2. I can play movies immidiately in the cam app after recording them (before: memory pb).
3. The GPS has so far started one time very quickly (warm start) efter only a couple of seconds. I haven't ever seen that before in my N95.
4. I can move between images of pictures and movies in the Gallries app without that the phone images stutters.

No difference:

1. Still many shortages of memory when still using on e app while starting another.
2. GPS overall sensitivity is the same.
3. Music Player can still not read all artist names and doesn't understand album cover art.
4. Severals apps cannot still not be quit by pressing the red key. The Music Player can still not even be quit by presseing "C" in the open app list.
5. Still very much noise when recording movie in silent room.

i guess generic is better, my friend's n95 unit from orange doesn't have internet telephony and that sucks...

1. My GPS sensitivity seems much better, even from a cold start. Before it seemed to get satelites but would sit there without getting a fix. Now it seems to get a fix <1min, even out my window.

2. If you have multiple windows open in the web browser you get a nice thumbnail view to move between them

3. Much faster overall, in particular the stupid multimedia menu now comes up in around 1 second, which lowers the annoyance when i hit the button accidently.

4. Less UI freezes, makes the phone feel much smoother. General speed improvement in menus.

5. No memory errors when browsing (yet).

6. Picture taking much improved - ~10seconds from opening the camera on the front to getting a picture, around 3 seconds from pushing the shutter button

This is the phone that nokia should have shipped - a great improvment.

Used to get a stutter in videos - most apparent when playing in Windows. That's gone - it's all smooth now.

Straight away noticed that camera auto-focusing is much faster.
Don't know about results quality yet.

Don't know about WiFi yet - it was always fine surfing, but often had to reboot my router to get Truphone to register - but that's more likely to be a router issue as Truphone always connected post-reboot.
Will try Truphone later today.
EDIT : - Just did and it's still the same.

Was on O-2 FW, but generic 11.x seems to crash/auto-reboot more frequently. Three times in 24 hours, as opposed to every other day.

Gunna test out the GPS receiver today.
EDIT : - It's definitely quicker getting a fix.

As to menues being faster : - they already were fast, don't notice any difference.

Thats quite impressive that a simple update of the firmware can change things such as GPS speed, menu speed and camera speed. These are the kinda things which slightly annoy me about the N95 and other smart phones ive had (6600 and 6630), slow menus and stuff.
The thing about accidently hitting the media menu button is so true, glad that load time is reduced its quite annoying, its supposed 2 be a new and good feature, and still there is stuttering when loading it, thats not the kind of thing youd expect to see on a brand new state of the art phone!

So everyones positive about the FW, no negatives?
