3D action game under development

Hello,

I would like to show you some screens of a 3D action game for the Nokia 7650 that we have under development at the moment at Overloaded (www.overloaded.com); it's a fast mission based shoot 'm up. Hard to explain, I think the shots say it better:

The title of the game will most likely be 'Resistance'.

The game is using our own game development library (called Easym/B) wich will be made available to other coders (sources included) also around mid-february. It offers direct screen access, multiple channel audio playback, scalable sprites and surfaces and other basic stuff for writing games. 8)

The game is supposed to enter testing within two weeks; it should be available mid-february. If you are a (p)reviewer, don't hesitate to ask for a (beta) technology demo.

Greets,

Jacco Bikker (a.k.a. "The Phantom"😉

On behalf of all the voices in my head, I'd like to say that our considered opinion, based on the screenshots provided, is that the game looks Flippin' Awesome!

😃 😃 😃

whoa, can they "do" that??!

Looks like a very sweet game!! We need more programmers like you!! 😃

Anywayz, it's a game.. So ==========> to Symbian Gaming 😉

The installer is 230kb at the moment; installed the game is 370kb. I expect it to become smaller since I haven't implemented some stuff that will make it quite a bit smaller.

Some more info to wet your appetite: 'Resistance' will feature 10 or 20 missions, packed in 2 or 4 'chapters' (10 or 20 since we're investigating if it's possible to sell the game in parts, to keep the price as low as possible; new missions would be added regularly).

The storyline: "Our planet has been invaded. We are outnumbered. Our cities are destroyed, our warriors were slain. We are 'the resistance' and we fight for what is ours. Welcome on your first mission, cadet. This is the chance you wanted to make them pay." - first mission briefing.

The 3D engine runs smoothly at 40fps using vertical interlacing, or 25 without it; other options are to blur the display (motion blur looks cool 😉 ), and we're considering a stereo view (red / green glass required).

The action takes place in a flat plane so the controls aren't too complicated.

And the option screen right now has 10 items that make the game just right for every individual player. 😊

More screenshots later today; expect a demo next week.

Wow! All this in 300k! It makes Geopod look ridiculous! I can't wait, as usual with any new game on the 7650! I only wish there was a way to erase the music and sound effects in Geopod, it would save a load of memory.

We've got other requests from 9210 users already; Overloaded is very new to the Symbian platform though (Breakthru was our first Symbian game, Resistance will be the second) so I doubt that we will port to 9210 this early. Perhaps someone can answer these questions:

- Does the 9210 have a 100Mhz ARM CPU like the 7650?
- Would you mind if a game uses only part of the screen (weird screen dimensions are the biggest problem)?
- How many copies does a 9210 game sell? Is there a game playing community?

Right now, we're developing & researching our core tech and writing games; soon we'll be porting our arsenal of PocketPC titles (about 9 games). We also plan to do more games based on the 3D engine from 'Resistance', the engine is quite versatile.

BTW sorry for not posting a screenshot, I've been busy all Friday working on the library for our soon-to-be announced developer website.

Voxels are the perfect solution for 100Mhz processors. 😊 They are a bit limited though; hard to rotate around anything but the y-axis. For resistance, we added bilerp for colors and heights, and vertical interlacing to get it fast. And scalable sprites. Lots of 'm. 😊
*Cough* Anything in line for us '9210' people
*cough* *cough* yeah... dont leave us behind... please. 😉

Well I still believe gameplay is more important than good graphics. Although both can emphasize eachother. 😊

Jacco:
about 92xx phones, they use 52MHz ARM cpus as far as I know.
Peoples don't mind playing on part screen only (I think).
Market is similar to Series60 atm. But Series60 devices market is growing rapidly while 92xx market is growing slowly and will be replaced sometime this year by series90 market.(differences - 640x300 touchscreen, that's all i know)

PS. 92xx is called by Nokia as series80.

PPS:I have emailed you sometime last year (or maybe posted sth on pocketmatrix forum? don't remember) asking if Novalogic has any problems with other ppl writing voxel engines?
i know they have got few patents about it and I was wondering earlier about creating a Symbian Voxel engine, too.
But it ended up with a small PC testing engine as for now 😊

ok, so it could work on 50mhz processors, but lets face it, who has the time to optimize it / rewrite it in arm-asm etc... no one. not without payment ofcourse 😊

I think screen size in 9210 isn`t so important for gameplay. You can always utilize it. IE you can put that small radar box one side and put some basic info to the oder side (bombs, score, life, etc)
But 52Mz make difference...
