Hi
Just got my N95. I've already reflashed it to remove the Voda firmware. Just wondering what other cool stuff I can do with it?
Thought a top 10 would be a good idea, any top programs I shouldn't be living without, or other stuff I shouldn't miss out on?...
Cheers
😎
There are many programs and applications for this phone. But to be honest the best thing that you can do is to firstly get a nice memory card for it, I have an N95 and I now have a 2GB card, a nice nokia leather case and a bluetooth headset.
I can now use my N95 as an mp3 player, and there are no random wires that bother me. I found that the clip on the handsfree that came with the phone was all wrong and uncomfortable to wear. There are loads of bluetooth headsets it's just up to you to find one that you like to be honest.
If you want programs it just depends on what you are looking for in a mobile phone. There are many mp3 playes for this phone, but I honestly can't find any reason why the default player needs replacing. However I have downloaded Divx for my mobile and smartmovie converter so that I can play any file on my phone now.
NB. After finding out about the Gmail application - if you look under you will see how ><, I have added this to the list also. If you don't have a gmail or googlemail address you should do.
I wouldn't be without:
Y-Browser - Free file browser (much more features and access than the crappy included one)
Sports Tracker - Uses GPS to track your runs, skiing, whatever
Gmail app - Gives you fast and easy access to Gmail that looks and works like the browser page but adapted for the phone

3Shirts, where did you get the gmail application from? That sounds pretty nice tbh.
Hi!
Gmail's phone app can be downloaded directly to your phone by entering "http://gmail.com/app" in your phone browser 😉 It's not very big.
That is amazing. Thanks very much both of you for informing me and pointing me in the right direction.
Hey
already got gmail installed last night, can't live without when at work and not being able to check me emails!
In regards to the cards, I think I'm going to wait for the new 4gb to come down in price. Would really like to have ago at replacing my nano with this as well, so 4gb is going to be the min I think, otherwise I'll just get annoyed. Not too impressed with the sound quality though, there is a definite hiss which I don't get through the nano 😡
Y-browser sounds worth getting 😊
I found that when using my headset there is a hiss, but only when the headset is on full - to counter this i turned the media player to full and turned the headset volume down. It worked quite well tbh, and I never need to have my headset on full.

There's no need to install this java application since you can configure a (POP) gmail account in the N95 built in mail application (Messages\Options\Settings\e-mail..). Detailed instructions for security and port settings can be found here (use the same settings as for Outlook 2002) http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=13276
You will also have to enable POP in you're Gmail account (when logged in to gmail using web browser choose Settings\Forwarding and POP...)
You will then have offline access to your e-mail with option to manual or automated/scheduled download of new e-mail.

Yeah but that annoys me because I use the archiving feature of gmail all the time. Through the browser and java gmail app archiving hides them from the inbox but if you use pop to access it, you see ALL of the archived mail in your inbox and since its in date order you end up with the few emails you want (that are in your un-archived inbox) mixed up with all the ones you have archived.

Good point. I don't use the archive function so I hadn't noticed that fact.. 🙄
Another issue I've noticed though is that mail sent from gmail from web browser appears in my Gmail inbox on my N95 as if I had sent the mail tom myself which is quite annoying.
Anyone has a fix for that??
I found that when using the on phone email service i couldn't delete from the gmail server. And the interface for the gmail application is so much nicer than the phone interface, and very easy to use.
There is also:
Spodtronic - An AMAZING internet radio and it free

other apps can be located on common BT sites.
Hi Canadian,
When I try to install Thesaurus, I get a communicate that instalation is not possible. Any help to overcome it?
Thanks in advance.
Hey,
Has anybody succeeded in installing any of those dictionaries
i.e. from the page downloads.zdnet.co.uk/0,1000000375,39315954s,00.htm?
Thesaurus looks promissing.
Unfortunately I can't install it.
Is there anybody more experienced to explain to me
why the dictionaries from the page
downloads.zdnet.co.uk/0,1000000375,39315954s,00.htm
don't want to work?
hi.
may have given you a bum link on the thesaurus....
I looked up the ABOUT info in the app and it points to
mobisystems.com

Other symbian apps that I found, good for travellers ....
* CIA world fact book for symbian
* Mobimate worldmate (payware with free eval)
* psiloc hotspot finder .... (although the resident wifi finder is just as good, this is just a fancier version ...)

Canadian
Folks.
Its been mentioned on the forum before, but adding to this thread of great apps for the N95,
Vimio - TV.
lets me watch TV (CNN and sky news) via wifi.
good for travellers are airport hotspots etc ...
There is no N95 specific version, but the N80 version works on the N95.
download free from their website .....
Hi Canadian,
that's really great to watch CNN on mobile, thanks for this link.
It's a pity that I can't maximize the view to the whole display.
On Live TV just press the centre navigation button and the picture will change to full landscape. Hope this helps.
I find the 'Travel' series of ebooks by MobileReference very good. They are all on a per city basis like 'Travel - London', 'Travel - New York' etc. Great for the traveller.
They contain history of the city, underground maps, hotels, places to eat, tourist places etc

podcaster
mobipocket
widsets

It helped me too 😊.
Has somebody measured how much data is fetched while e.g. watching CNN for 1 minute in medium resolution or something like this?
