N95 Multimedia key not working??, Here's the reason!

8 replies · 4,223 views · Started 17 May 2007

Many people have reported problems with the Multimedia key not working on their N95.

After it started happening to me I had a play to see if I could find out why?

What I have discovered is that it is caused by setting a recurring (ie. a Daily or Workdays) alarm in the clock function.

To recreate the problem follow this procedure.

1: Turn your phone off then on again
2: Press the multimedia key and check that the multimedia menu opens.
3: Goto to the clock application and set an alarm, (it must be a recurring one) I set one about 3 minutes in the future, also set it to repeat daily or workdays.
4: Return to the standby screen and await for the alarm to go off.
5: Press the Multimedia key and you will find that nothing happens, the multimedia menu faills to open
6: Go back to the Clock app and delete the alarm.
7: Turn your phone off then on again and press the Multimedia key, it will now work perfectly once again.

The Cure?

The only real cure at the moment is not to set a recurring alarm with the built in clock application.
You could purchase Epocware's Handy Clock or Handy Alarm both of which work with recurring alarms perfectly.

Funnily enough when Epocware first released HandyClock for S60V3 they had exactly the same problem, Epocware managed to cure it on their updated version, lets hope Nokia do to.

Yes I do have the latest firmware, I must admit I had never really noticed it until today.
Occasionally the button seemed to stop working and I just rebooted the phone, but I used the button this morning and soon after an alarm went off, I then used the button and it didn't work, so I had a play in case it was caused by BestProfiles which I installed yesterday, and discovered the above.

Having had a trawl around the net this evening, others have noted the problem to...

it is discussed here

The recurring alarm has to have gone off for the button to stop working, also if you have restarted your phone for any reason the button will work again until the alarm goes off.

I have recurring alarms and do not have this problem on old firmware. Haven't upgraded yet, too busy!

I have the same problem on the new firmware. BUT, It's not only the rep alarms that makes the mediabutton stop, 'couse I don't use any alarms and this still happens.
I can't figure out what problem couses it.(Can't be bothered restarting my phone that many times)
But this is not only an alarm problem.
It not life & death, since you can just open the media slider, but it sure is anoying!..

Hi Capitaine,

No, it's the button to the right of your navkeys/direction pad.
😊

OK I can do one better, I can get the multimedia slider as well as the key to not work!

Yes, i cant get to the multimedia menu and a restore factory settings nor a reboot will sort it out. Im assuming a hard reset will but Id like to do that as a last resort.

I'm going from memory here seen as i cant access the multimedia screen but here goes.

Oh yeah...IF YOU TRY THIS YOUVE LOST YOUR MULTIMEDIA SCREEN!!! dont blame me.

1) version 11.0.0.26 firmware on an o2 handset
2) open multimedia menu by pressing the key.
3) press options>background images
4) select your own images to use as a background images by selecting "add" to fill up the slots.
I forget how many slots there are but fill all up with images except the last one at the bottom. Leave the last slot empty.

5) exit the multimedia menu
6) enter the multimedia menu

did it show? if it did, repeat steps 5 & 6 a couple of times using the key.
When it doesnt show, try using the slider.

does this do this on version 12?
how the FCUK can i fix this?
is it worth upgrading to version 12 because ive heard about some serious issues with the camera.
