Hi everone.
I would like to know the risks of making a firmware update using the Nokia Software Update (NSU)? has anyone bricked his phone?
I am asking since I do not have warranty on the phone and I do not wish to loose all my money.
Another option would be to take this to a Nokia Service Center but they told me that they are not responsible if something goes wrong - in a few words, if they brick the phone.
Any reccomendations?
From what I've seen, most problems come from the restore of settings once the upgrade is done.
If I were you I'd got for update but not do the resotore. If you have it, Sync with outlook first so at least you'll get your contacts back.
If you don't have Outlook you could try the resotre if you are brave but untick the settings bit.
Just flashed my O2 to generic. Must admit I was on Brown Alert for the whole process as I didn't want to brick it. About 2/3 of the way thru the actual update it said "connection to phone lost", but I hit retry and it worked fine.
Even kept all the settings etc

upgraded my firmware last week using nokia suite. Had absolutely no problems at all. Just make sure your phone is fully charged before upgrading to avoid the phonea battery going dead during the upgrade.
I changed my T-Mobile to generic then updated AND restored the backup. I had no problems at all but having read the potential issues of the restore I think I was pretty lucky. Next time I do an update I don't think I'll restore a backup, don't wanna push my luck!

Your phone will be assigned to 02 product code, if you upgraded with the current code the splash screen will still be present. You can however change the product code to Euro1 which will remove all the network providers settings. Please not that changing the product code voides the warranty.
Thnks. How do i change the product code ?
Thnks a Lot !

It got rid of the O2 splash screen, wallpapers etc. However, it DID keep the O2 "get settings" app
Thnks. How do you did that ? You had to change the product code ?
Thnks a Lot

Would anyone reccomend a Nokia Service Center for the update or do it at home? Which one is safer?

If you have a warranty / proof of purchase, then your choice as to using NSU at home or going to an NSS to have Nokia flash the phone.
If you do not have proof of purchase, then the NCC would probably charge you a fee, but would still do it for you if you are willing to pay.
Personally I would recommend NSU at home.
Haven't updated my N95 yet, but I do remember wrecking my old N73 after an update.
The update went fine, but after i restored the backup made through Nokia Backup, the phone went dead.

Restoring the 'settings' in backups can cause problems when moving from one firmware to another. if this happens you can reformat the phone by holding * 3 'Green call button' down while you turn the phone on and keep those three buttons pressed until 'Nokia' appears on the display. The phone will then go back to the factory settings of the last firmware applied to the phone.
