The BBC reports that the British climber Rod Baber has successfully made a mobile phone call from the top of Mount Everest. It's of particular interest to All About Symbian as the model used was a Motorola Z8, the brand new Symbian UIQ3 smartphone. You can find out more at Motorola's special Everest mini-site.

That's pretty impressive. a few years back a lot of DSLR's would fail in the cold and high altitude. Well done Motorola! I quite like the look of this phone and symbian makes it more versatile than Motos of old. This is the first Moto I have liked the look of!
Yup, the Z8 does look very good indeed, like you say it's much better looking than the RAZR. It's also very healthy for Symbian to have an alternative to the Nokia and Sony Ericsson design styles, more choice means a bigger userbase.
One slight caveat, the climber had to wear the batteries next to his body to keep them operational, but it's extremely unlikely that most people would ever face those kinds of temperatures for an extended period.
Apparently this expedition became possible because the Chinese opened a phone network base station that had line of sight with the summit of Everest. It shows just what a poor job certain phone networks are doing when you can't get their signal in the middle of a city.
Have you guys seen this post by Eldar regarding Motos next UIQ devices?? Its huge!
