"Hi Steve, further to my comment a few days ago about "all About s60", perhaps this is an example as you can use this accessory with Symbian UIQ3 phones too, not just a compatible s60 smart phone, - a casual browser of the site might not realise..."
paddytb, I agree that it would have been nice to test this with a UIQ3 phone but I simply didn't have one. 😞
However, I did actually publish this article in the UIQ3 section as well as the S60 3rd section ( http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/reviews/UIQ_3/ ) so anyone browsing for UIQ3 reviews on AAS would have seen this headphone review.
I did also try to emphasise in the text that these are compatible with any A2DP devices, even non-phones, and that's also why I mentioned using the BH-501 with a Series 40 non-smart phone as well as a Symbian phone.
"I sincerely hope there was just an error with the unit in this review in regards to automatic connections. I have been shopping around for this headset for a couple weeks now, and if all the 501's have this problem, it'll be a deal breaker for me."
I could not get the automatic connection to work with either a 5700 or a 5300. I tried lots of times, because I was very surprised that it didn't work. The 5700 and 5300 had no problems detecting the BH-500 automatically, but neither would detect the BH-501.
Bear in mind the 501 is a relatively cheap for a pair of bluetooth headphones, it's only about 45 euros plus VAT. By comparison the BH-500 (which does have automatic connection) is double that price. I'd strongly recommend the BH-500 actually, if you want automatic connections and bluetooth music controls.
"Based on what this review said, I can connect them to my PC for audio and simultaneously connect them to my N95 for any incoming phone calls, which I'd probably miss otherwise."
That's not what I actually said in the review. What I said was that if you have a audio-only A2DP connection from one device and a headset-only connection from another device, then the instruction manual says you can use both at once.
The problem with connecting it to the N95 or indeed any A2DP phone is that the A2DP connection isn't audio-only, it's audio and headset all at once. As far as I know you cannot connect A2DP headphones to an A2DP phone in audio-only mode.
"Is it possible to "choose" which phone it connects to somehow. I mean you pair it with both phones, have both phones switched on with bluetooth on. But you decide which of the phones it connects to."
Yes, you can do this by simply disconnecting the BH-501 from one phone through its bluetooth menu, then connecting to the BH-501 from the other phone's bluetooth menu. As long as both phones have already been paired with the BH-501, there should be no problem.
In fact, you have to connect through the bluetooth menus anyway as the BH-501 doesn't support automatic connections.
