Sorry but when you see a weblog developed that has this many ads on it such that the ads distract from the overall content you have to question the motivation of the sites owner.
For instance, her site doesn't even load in a Series 60 browser without running out of memory. And this is from a Nokia/Series 60 advocate. You'd think that someone who was writing about Series 60 phones would make their content visible on those phones.
But when a weblog starts to look like a myspace page it's time to move on.

Stunning, Ms Mobile Div cant get out much!
Maybe she's a re-encarnation of Russell Beattie?
But for my money the noise to signal ratio of her website is now much too high.
It doesn't look like my comment on her website is going to get past the moderator stage.
Leave her be. Shes a lady that just like collecting those cool little addons (pack rat). They dont distract me at all and if they do you, then you need to be less sensitive. Just use widsets and read the RSS version of her website, problem solved.
She is a nice lady and very friendly, i suggest you dont go cast spurious comments against her just cos' you have a certain sensibility. You dont like it, then dont go there.
steffi wrote:Maybe she's a re-encarnation of Russell Beattie?
Russell's site didn't show any ads at all, if you went there directly. He had only ads if you went through a link/referral from some other site or search engines. That was extremely polite of him, I'd say.
I wasn't going to respond to this but feel compelled to throw in my tuppence-worth. As the man said, you don't like it, you don't go there. I think it's a tad out of order to criticise something like that: it's not a public service and you don't pay for it. You think you can do better then start your own blog.
If you look for a good (and free 😉 Rss software for your phone, try
SubliMobi Rss reader (sublimobi.com).

First of all, besides the fact that something like this doesn't belong in the N95 subforum, my site along with other Typepad sites like Symbian-Guru and Ring Nokia don't fully load on the S60 browser. I have passed this on to the browser team and they are looking into it.
Secondly, where is your site so that I may get some tips on just how many ads to place? And do you mean ad's alone or just overall sidebar content... because I have seen much worse!!
Thirdly... lol my site looks nothing like my MySpace page.... but thanks for your opinion in any case.
Hi all,
I really don't get the point of the original post if you don't like it don't visit quite simple really. I am quite happy to see the adverts as they are far from intrusive and IMHO a small price to pay for the wealth of tips and links to both software and other resources. I suppose you just can't please all of the people all of the time, also having recently started a Blog i can tell you it's not as easy as it looks, so instead of complaining i for one would like to thank and congratulate Darla on all her excellent good work.
Marc

Not if you quote her page like that. I like her and the contents of her and it might take a minute to load but I still like what I see.

Are you questioning his right to free speech ?

We could say are you questioning Neilhoskins right to speech too while we're at it?

How is questioning his right to gag somebody "questioning his right to speech" ?
You have just marked yourself as very dumb or very foolish.
Take your pick.
Well this thread got very bitchy didn't it.
Lets all hug it out

I stand by what Neilhoskins wrote/typed!
He is'nt trying to gag him at all and i think i would say the same thing too.
Very dumb or very foolish eh?
How dare you judge me on one sentence, you do'nt know me so DO NOT try mug me off on the forum!
I agree she has useful content but if you don't turn off images you aren't going to see it on the Series 60 browser unless you use the RSS reader. The header is large for Series 60 browser and both the left and right columns are all ads. To each his own I'd just like her to reconsider the additional stuff since then we can read the site. It doesn't matter that it's typepad etc.. Surely she's the one in control of the content?

Who the Hell are you to say "Who the f*ck are you to judge me" ?
I think you need to Google the terms 'maniac' and 'ego'.
Get over yourself.

Now your questioning my right to speak!?!
''Who the f*ck are you to judge me"
What has 'Maniac' and 'ego' got to do with this statement?
Maniac
http://www.google.co.uk/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GZHZ,GZHZ:2007-25,GZHZ:en&q=maniac
Ego
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&rls=GZHZ%2CGZHZ%3A2007-25%2CGZHZ%3Aen&q=ego&btnG=Search&meta=
That was a waste of time, just like you and your comments, because your last one,see above, went down like a lead balloon.

How dare you question my right to speak.
If you don't mind my asking, how old are you ?
Ok, well I do love wading into a good argument so I'll just point out to Pheonix that while we are looking in the dictionary, you might want to check out 'dumb' and 'foolish' cos the last time I looked they meant pretty much the same thing!
Pheonix SZ wrote:How dare you question my right to speak. If you don't mind my asking, how old are you ?
I'm 30 years old..........you?
Calm down children. This thread has descended into a slanging match.
Ultimately if you don't like the site, don't use it. Sure, by all means give constructive criticism but when threads descend into flame wars and petty insults it's time for the padlock.
Edit: I think I'll unlock the thread now as hopefully people have cooled off so civilised discussion on the topic can resume. If it turns into another argument I will lock it again.

I'm curious Steffi... what you do think my motivations are? This has bothered me ever since I came across this thread and as much as I don't owe you or anyone else an explanation I want to share this much.
When you have kids of your own and are forced to make a decision to be a stay at home parent what would you do???
I started blogging almost 4 years now and didn't always have ads. It was from comments from companies like Nokia that encouraged me to place ads on my site.
So because I have ads that means I have a motive? A hidden agenda? So that means that AllAboutSymbian has an agenda as well, right? Because they have ads... Howard Forums has ads. Heck almost everyone has ads... but you frequent these sites... even though they have ads.
Hmmm.... whats your motivation?
For the record... I'm working on a way to edit or create my existing template for my readers who were nice enough to shoot me an email and IM instead of blatently dropping it in a forum.

Well,i got your back Darla,F*ck the haters............Steffi,all sites need ad's,that's how they stay afloat, money does'nt grow on trees you know!
Darla wrote:Heck almost everyone has ads... but you frequent these sites... even though they have ads.
I think the point is just the quantity of adverts. There needs to be a balance between revenue generation and user experience, and I assume the point being made was that there is an over-weighting towards revenue generation on your site, such that it degrades user experience.

But I only have 4 spots on my main page with ads. One under the banner, 2 on the left Sidebar and one under the first blog post. Is that too much, because I've seen more.
I think the combination of both ads AND widgets could be the problem... not just ads alone. And yes according the Six Apart, there is a problem with certain templates not being viewable.
Lol, I've had the same template for 4 years.... its just been tweaked repeatedly. Now what S60 device was viewing full web pages 4 years ago?
I do agree that my site is in need of an overhaul and I am in the process of fixing that and hopefully moving to a newer template. But its in the works. And even though I control content through Typepad, they control their templates. Since I'm no pro at CSS I'm having someone help out.
Darla,
Seriously, I would not take much notice of this. Your site is a good centre for news about Mobile Tech and I'm sure has plenty of subscribers. I don't know your traffic stats, but I'd say they're pretty healthy; that's what speaks volumes, not someone sounding off in someone else's forum where sour grapes were not invited. Even if, on the off chance, this thread was really started to educate us all on your site's inability to load on a S60 browser, it was done in a way that was malicious. After reading the first post, it is clear that it's someone picking on a highly visible web presence. Perils of the territory I suppose.
And I think anyone who can make any money from a blog is very admirable. No need for explanation on that. Just take this site as a fine example.
