If anyone has any questions, please post them in this thread and I'll try to answer them! 😊
Steve, there shouldn't be any problem using it in the UK, I've just noticed there's a built-in online store where you can buy detailed maps for regions that aren't included with the phone.
(Plus there's the less detailed map of the world included anyway...)
Is there any reason why one should buy this device instead of the N95?
"Is there any reason why one should buy this device instead of the N95?"
It costs 200 euros less than the N95, that's a pretty good reason... 😊
Does this have a built-in compass?
I notice that the satellite constellation refers to compass points, and it made me wonder if Nokia are having another go at the digital compass thing...
Tom
Yes, there is a compass. You press 5 in the main map application to see things like the compass, the satellite constellation, signal strengths etc.
Ah, thats good. I still think a compass is often more useful than either GPS or a map, simply because you need to know which way to walk! This is especially true in the ticky-tacky housing estates from the '80s...
The 6110 does actually change the orientation of the map depending on the direction you're travelling, so you don't actually have to look at the separate compass.
Hi krisse!
And thanks for your quick review.
It looks like 6110 is using Route66 navigation program. Or is it Smart2go aka Nokia maps?
Route 66 is bundled with the phone, along with detailed maps for the region the phone is bought in (for example the Finnish 6110 includes maps for Scandinavia) and less detailed world maps.
As far as I know you could use Smart2go instead of Route 66, but I haven't had the chance to test it yet.
Oh, ok. So I take that you have tested Route66 as navigation program. I would take that as a news. 😉 (I mean Route66 is the default one).
One big important question no one has asked yet....
How long does it take for the GPS to find satellites from a cold-start?
I ask this 'cos of the varied but initially long time it takes for the N95 to find satellites when you start up the maps program. Its usually 10 minutes or more for me.
I've uploaded a video of the 6110 in action onto the Gadget Picture Show website. Check it out here:

Orophin, it did take about 5 or 10 minutes from a cold start while indoors. I don't know the exact figure, but I'll try to time it for the actual review. Once it's on though, you can leave it locked on of course.
First of all I'm really glad to see your enthusiasm for using GPS in practice. I too am a strong believer in GPS as a huge part of the mobile future. And I also have yet to actually use GPS before. So I was worried till now that it might not be usable in the real world.
On a personal note, do you know if it is possible to get smart2go (or any other) maps for navigation in Israel. I couldn't find them on the smart2go website but as the N95 has arrived here I thought it would make sense that they do actually exist.
thanks.
I don't know about Smart2go, although it's worth bearing in mind it's technically still in Beta so there may be bits missing that they will add later.
I'm guessing there is no way to get that Route 66 app from the 6110 to the N95. Would be a nice freebie for the extra 200 euros N95 users paid.
"Would be a nice freebie for the extra 200 euros N95 users paid."
The extra 200 euros goes on the N95's wifi, 5 megapixel camera, VGA-quality camcorder, TV Out socket, 3D graphics accelerator etc.
I'm not sure why people keep comparing the 6110 and N95, the only thing they have in common is the built-in GPS. The 6110 is technically much closer to the 5700 or 6290.
Don't think there is a builtin digital compass.
The displayed compass is only adjusted from the last move(GPS).
Make a test and rotate the phone around itself.

You're right that there's no magnetic compass built into it. But there is a separate compass screen which uses GPS data to show the direction you're facing. It doesn't update as often as a magnetic compass would, but it is there and it does work.
In practical terms, I can't see the advantage of a magnetic compass over a GPS one. If the phone accurately tells you where you are and where you're going, why would you want a magnetic compass at all?

Your are mabe right for car navigation,
but go in the woods. Walk a while.
1. Child: Where do we go now ?
You: Wait I have to look at my magic gps phone.
2. Child: I'm hungry.
You: What was the exact direction we walked before ?
2. Child: I'm hungry.
You: Running 10 Meters in a specific direction and afterwards 10 Meters
in another direction always focused your phone display.
Mmmh, maybe the gps signals are not good enough ?
You: Running 100 Meters: Oh that was wrong.
2. Child: I'm hungry.
1. Child: Laughing
Trying to find the right direction by moving 10 metres is MUCH easier than trying to find the right direction using a magnetic compass and referring to a map.
If you're deep in the middle of woods, 10 metres probably isn't even 1% of the total distance you intend to walk.
How long does it take for the GPS to find satellites from a hot-start.
Is the screen not to small?? 2,2 inch

Hi Krisse,
you misunderstood me.
Your GPS map application should get only the direction information from a digital compass and not from the GPS.
A modern compass sensor also supports 3D direction information.
Would be cool to have it in a phone.

Hi,
1-as someone used to PPC , and to Tomtom or I-go SOft. how the maps quality compared?
2- if i dont have GPRS settings, how can i get extra maps for 6110?
