So This Bloody Battery....

30 replies · 5,161 views · Started 19 June 2007

Does anyone else think that despite the greatness of our phones, we have been seriously shortchanged when it comes to the battery. I reckon it must be worth about 99p!

I charge mine up of an evening, and by the next evening despite having made very little in the way of calls, or doing very much for that matter, it needs charging again! I make sure all the apps are exited properly, and bluetooth is turned off etc. etc.

What does everyone else reckon? I'm considering complaining to Nokia direct because it's appalling. Also does anyone know if you can get hold of a better battery from anywhere....

😡

Although it won't stand a battering I find it lasts ok. I use it a fair bit during the day, have dual mode and bluetooth always on (but wlan scan off) and I listen to the radio on my commute (1.5 hours each way). I usually have a couple of bars left when I get home and plug it in.
Are you connecting USB at all, cos that kills it fast!

only to download maps really. the best battery I ever had was the 5110. would last me a week....

....those were the days....

Yeah, but look at what your N95 does compared to the 5110! If you switch off dual mode (3G), bluetooth and wlan, don't use the GPS, camera, usb connection, radio or music player and only make calls, send texts and play snake you'll get great life out of the N95 battery!

You can get a stronger battery but i've heards it's not much kop!

Mobilefun sell them.

A pretty asinine comment, who would be stupid enough to hand the phone in for repair with the offending battery?

On the other hand...

... if the cheap replacement battery leaks or explodes, it's gonna be pretty obvious event to a Nokia engineer that the original battery wasn't at fault...

That's pretty offensive to be honest. I was only pointing out that a non-nokia battery might damage the phone and nokia wouldn't cover that damage! No need to be rude to me

There is a difference between a personal (ad hominem) attack and being critical of a comment. In cyberspace we're all faceless, so I was just going on your comment.. nothing to do with you as an individual.

I never understand why their has never been a high quality 3rd party design. I know that it may be more expensive than normal 3rd party ones but if you could expand the lifetime and have all the safety features then im sure it would be a seller. I mean Nokia never releases new batteries with higher capacities for their phones, their has to be some 3rd party that builds high quality, safe batteries that have all the safety circuits in and do expand lifetime.

I suppose if it was that easy, Nokia would do it. After all, they could charge a premium for a longer lasting N95 battery and we'd still snap it up.

I believe the laws of electro-physics state that a given physical mass of battery (Li-on for example) material you get a pretty constant current/charge capacity. I suspect there are materials other than Li-on which hold more charge but would be prohibitively expensive...?

Mine hasn't been too bad to be fair, it makes it through my average day with plenty to spare so i'm not that bothered, it'll even just about last a heavy day which would typically mean half an hour of music, half an hour of wifi internet, an hour of photography and an hour of GPS. They are very sensitive to usage, leave it alone and it'll last a few days, pick it up every five minutes and of course it will run out within a day.

If it's battery life you want you have to make a choice between technology and stability, it's as simple as that until new technology is commonly used in smartphone batteries.

It seems battery lifetime keeps falling with each Smart phone release

My 6600 would get about 3-4 days

My 6680 would get 2-3 Days

N95 about 1-2 days

I hate to see what future smart phone battery life goes like 0-1 day or something.

I never let mine go down, if possible... On the way to and from work, it's charging off my motorcycle 12v, approx 2 hours each way, but I tend to get away with not charging between Saturday morning (5AM) till Monday night (11PM) if I'm careful over the weekend.

I was quite worried about how short the battery life was, even compared to the N80 when I started using my new N95.

I've had it for two weeks now and it's improved enormously. Probably helps that I haven't got any friends to make / receive calls / texts to / from 😃

Hang on a minute, why am I smiling?!

Unfortunately, the trend is for more powerful devices whilst keeping the handset size the same or even smaller than previous models, which in turn means the battery has to remain small.

Battery life is directly proportional (usually) to the size/mass of the battery material and therefore unless you want a PDA size phone, we are stuck with charging our smartphones each night.

Someday a solution will come out - probably an alternative to Li-On batteries.

If its a 3rd party one e.g not made by Nokia you probably wont see any increase in battery life. The problem is that the 3rd party ones claim extra capcity and all that but just dont match Nokia original batteries. Also 3rd party ones can be dangerous as they can explode or rupture if they are the cheap ones because their are no protective circuits, such as short circuit protection, overload protection ad all that.

Im just going to use it as a spare (if im out, and my battery dies i could put tht in.

Should i risk it?? if not, how much are Nokia batterys?

I carry around the Proporta USB battery/charger. This gives me more than enough emergency juice to charge my N95 twice over, and is a reputable product. It has the added advantage of also being able to charge my PSP and iPod (and a myriad of other items if you get the appropriate tips).

How big is it?

There is a review on this site somewhere of the Proporta wotsit.
Sure that included details on how to purchase....
