Hi,
I have a problem with my GPS in that every time I hit "GPS pos." it centres on Berlin in Germany and not my actual location in the North-West of England. I've tried it in a few locations (with up to 5 sattelites being picked up) and it keeps doing it. Is there a setting I need to configure for it to find my real location, or is my N95 simply dazed and confused about where it is?
Thanks,
BrotherAl
You could try clearing all map data with Nokia Maploader and then re downloading the England ones again. How are you getting the Map data via GPRS or downloading it with your PC.
I downloaded all the maps via my home wireless network - haven't downloaded anything over the GPRS connection yet (scared it will cost me a fortune..!).
When you say you have 4-5 satalite signals, are you sure your actually connected? Your only connected to the satalites if the status bars beside them turn black. If your not actually connected then the system always tells you your in Berlin. Make sure the gps signal indicator doesnt have a red cross beside it before trying to home in.
Its also worth noting,it takes a while to get a gps lock. Normally about 5mins or so. Hope this helps

Good advice. However the initial satellite lock on a new device can even take up to 20 minutes.
Yes, just to reiterate, if your map centres over Germany, which is the default position, then it has no data to say it is elsewhere. The GPS will start at its last known position.
The GPS app will show bars of the satellites it is in communication to, but not necessarily managed to get a fix from. Once a fix is achieved, your position will be shown.
The initial startup process/lock can take 20 mins, and note that this will happen again if you move a significant distance from where the N95's GPS was last used. However, in this instance, it should just show the last known position.

Oh theirs no problem their but you maybe better using Nokia's MapLoader at least you can download a whole country onto the phone using your PC. Instead of only one we part, as downloading via the phones maps software wont download the whole country, youll be stuck if you move out of that area. As their wont be any map data.
Thats a strange one. Is your phone brand new? I would query why a past satellite lock was made in germany with whoever you got it from. If you have never been there that is!
As far as I am led to believe it is technically impossible for it to lock in a different place than where you are....

..
Not really. The first time the map program is run it defaults to the somewhere in the middle of Germany as its starting position. This remains so until it gets a lock and receives a new position to start from.
well i never....
fair play tho. don't remember mine doing this, but then i have blocked out all bad memories of trying to get to grips with this phone. And there are more than a few believe me....

Apparently CPW import their handsets cos they are cheaper to buy in mainland Europe. That's also why they (CPW) usually supply N95s in Nokia boxes - e.g. not black box with Orange writing if its locked to Orange UK - and the battery cover says Nokia instead of Orange. Perhaps it's an imported phone sourced in Germany?
However, if GPS has previously been locked to Berlin/Germany then it's probably not a brand new handset as someone has used it outside the UK.
I agree with you that GPS would not display a location in another country if it had managed to get a successfull signal lock in UK.

The map defaults to central Germany the first time Maps is loaded because Gate5 (the company that wrote the Maps software before being acquired by Nokia) is based in central Germany. They probably used their own coordinates as the default value.

Nice piece of info, thanks.
Guys, thanks for all the info. Since I first posted I've had a couple more attempts with the GPS, leaving it on my last attempt for about 10 minutes in the car. It's all sorted now! Must have been that it just took a while to first get the connection - now it's working fine and I've used it no probs.
Cheers,
Al
