How often do we get updates?

Hey

How often do Nokia normally issue firmware updates to a phone? I got a N95 Last week, with the latest software, just wondered when the next one might be?

It's best just to keep an eye on the stickied Fw thread at the top of the page.
Stu Clark will let us know when a new version is out, unless someone else does before him.

There isn't a schedule as such. They will be working on bugs and improvements and when they feel there are significant number to be worth releasing an update, they do. Typically there are more updates over the first few months as they fix the bugs that only mass-testing shows up. After that they tend to tail off

Where have you heard this Mate?

Soon hopefully. I just got too excited and totally missed the last paragraph which suggested that it's not officially released yet...

hi new to all this, how do i know which firmware i am on and should i always upgrade to the latest versions?

When this firmware is released, do i just update it as normal? or is it best to format the phone, then install the firmware?

It's not really worth formatting the phone before a FW upgrade as the flash process usually wipes the phone's internal memory anyway.

Most important though, do not perform a backup/restore with PC Suite or the phone's Memory Card tool as this can cause problems with the updated firmware. e.g. missing icons, random problems. It's safe to Synchronise your contacts and calendar entries with PC Suite, but backup & restore is a no-no.

Can you elaborate a bit on these problems when backing up via pc suite please Dez?

Numerous users have mentioned that folders or menu options disappear if a backup made from V10 FW is restored over V11 FW. Examples are the Internet-Telephone app (VOIP) functions disappearing, particularly if the backup was from a branded FW and the FW upgrade was to a generic/unbranded FW with a product code change. The functions are there and working until the restore is done. The same thing used to get reported regularly in the N80 forum (my previous phone) so it's not just an N95 problem, seems all Nokia Smartphones suffer this issue.

Other users report general unreliability - a few random apps closing down, or not starting up properly when the icon is clicked. A format seems to cure 99% of post-FW upgrade issues. Unfortunately you then have to manually re-install any apps which were previously installed to the phone's internal memory, and also synchronise your contacts, calendar, connection settings etc.

It's a small price to pay for a (hopefully) more reliable Smartphone FW.

Nice one Dez,i got a generic N95 from Mobile fun and updated the FW straight away to v.11 and i have'nt even backed anything up yet.
I'll soon find out if anything goes wrong when FW v.12 comes out.
