I downloaded the 4.37 firmware from the internet. i am using 3.12 right now. i wanted to upgrade but in my country its only 3.16 that is the latest here. so i did speak to the NSC and they agreed if i got the software they will install it for me. had ne1 ever installed 4.37 downloaded from the internet, since i wanted to know if it was safe to do it or no.
i tried searching for the same in the thread. but i guess i dint find any.

Usually they are reliable. Just make sure you have the correct language pack (ppm) for your phone. Never heard of Nokia agreeing to upload a supplied fw..that is definitely a first.
Worst that can happen..if it doesn't work, they have the original fw on hand, so they go back to that one.

Well..technically not really. Not if the fw updates are free anyways and it is installed by Nokia themselves. Theoretically, Fw updates are a repair or upgrade to functionality. So it is more like asking the agents to repair your TV, and they say they haven't got the parts, and you tell them that if you get the correct parts yourself, will they just install them for you.

Firmware is software you are not ment to have on your PC. You are ment to have it in an read only way in your phone. It is not allowed to distribute firmware versions. Only Nokia can do that, hence it is illegal to have..well except on your phone after a NSC upgrade!
Then why do they sell the manny flash upgrade kits for nokia phones?
You must be able to download the new firmware then or your kit is useless!
Don't know why nokia makes such a big deal 'bout upgrading your phone yourself. I mean they'll save a lot of time too if everyone was able to update their phone.

Do you know what unlocking is? Is it a way to get rid of the IMEI number?
Or is is it a way to use your phone with different operators?
Cause there are some phones that you can buy togheter with an operator account. But you never can change of operator then. Only sim cards of that operator work on that phone. Is unlocking a way to get rid of this?

I won't need it I guess cause I bought my gsm legally and rigestered it on nokia.
My guess is that unlocking is nothing more than flashing new firmware and that the phone is locked with a firmware that has been modified by the operator or for the operator by someone else.
So flashing original Nokia firmware would do the unlocking.

Hmm, just bought the new Archos Ondio MP3-player (funny little thing, u can record MP3 directly from the inbuilt radio or from any other source!), went to the producers homepage, downloaded the newest firmware, and installed it on the Ondio myself ... happened in 2 minutes ... why cant Nokia make it that easy ??
What i will say to everyone on this forum!!!
If you don't have any problems with your current firmware you don't have to do an update.It's like the bios on the motherboards on pc.If it works fine just leave it!!!
