We've tried not to overdo the iPhone coverage and comparisons, but I couldn't resist linking to Paul Whitaker's nicely done mini-movie, shot on the N95, as he and a friend stalk the line of iPhone 'waiters'...
Read on in the full article.
What can I say? More than $1000 spent for nothing and queue like if it is a limited series. No wonder people consider americans being idiots.
Well, there's no excuse for the silly queuing, but the price isn't too bad. Maybe it's just the weak dollar, but $2000 (1000) over two years doesn't compare that badly with the 800 to 1000 I'd spend on a device plus contract over the same period.
Actually, most of us (and our partners) would be horrified if the true cost of phones/smartphones was all added up! 8-)
Steve,
My N95 cost me around 270 on ebay. I got a (40 a month) 12 month contract on Orange with the full 12 months free (based on cashback from carphone warehouse). That contract came with a Nokia 6300 which should net around 100-120 on ebay so net cost of owning a smartphone for me was a mere 150.
I could also add in that I'm selling my old N73 too as that was my previous handset. That should go for 120-150 so we could be down to zero!
Gavin
I bought my E70 second hand for 200 euros, (aproxiamtely the price with a contract) and I'm using a prepay. If I make a comparison between iPhone's price and E70's, both new, both with contract there's a clear winner.
It seems that iPhone is a HUGE success no matter how you cut it. And it's just the very first phone model from apple. They can easily add 3G, GPS, video recording etc. in the foreseeable future, they can make nano version for the masses etc. I guess Symbian is going to be in really big trouble soon. It can easily become the iPod of mobile phone industry.
Comparing prices in Europe and the US is futile. The all you can eat data plans for any phone here in the US are at least $60/month. So, the iPhone's $70/month plan is $240 more expensive over two years. Not a significant difference.
The iPhone is indeed expensive for a phone you need to get with a plan. Then again, even if you do get an unlocked phone, you still need to get the plan somewhere.
If one has fairly significant discretionary income (which a lot of Americans do have; sorry, the purchasing power of US salaries is still way above most European countries), the price difference may not matter much when you want the coolest and the newest thing out there.
The UI on iPhone does look very nice, and many of the apps ARE very intuitive (yes, I've tried it myself). Those things that are very close to being facts, not just opinions. Therefore, it is equally futile to list spec by spec comparisons. Many people value intuitivity and eye candy higher than megapixels.
But I will probably get the US version of N95 when it comes out.
I don't think it was all that nice of them to go provoking the iphone crowd! They're blatently a load of happily clueless (in the nicest possible sense) guys who want a nice flash-looking phone. Sure it may not be the cheapest or best smartphone on the market, but they know they are guaranteed a certain standard of useability from apple, and we have to admit, it's a really good-looking device.
I also think Nokia could learn a thing or two from apple - the design ethos, the elegance, the innovation with materials and the touch screen. And obviously, apple have really done the marketing well.
Duncan.
Yes, the guy on the video was plain idiot.
I would trade my N95 for an iPhone without any hesitation.
Yes, N95 has billions of features, a (so-so) GPS and countless of megapixels and even 3G but what about the usability? UI? Speed? Intuitivity? The whole experience is soo mediocre for that money. S60 sucks and so does UIQ3 which is a joke. I will never forgive my previous M600i for SE. It was one of the worst experience in my entire life.
Nokia and SE design phones for the 'specifications' paper not for people.
Sour grapes, losers? Come back next year when Nokia will release its wannabe-iPhone with touchscreen and a poor copy of the iPhone interface. It's gonna be too late. Check the Zune, lamers.
Btw, wonder why your wimpy S60 phone is like a slow mo replay compared to the fluidity of the iPhone interface? Because the iPhone has a ~700MHz CPU and a shitload of RAM. 20MB free RAM, LOL.
Macboy, I agree with you but there is no no need to be so harsh even though the guy on the video was a retard. There are cool S60 guys out there as well.
And yes, the spectacular failure of the upcoming Nokia iPhone copy is not questionable. (Symbian + S60) vs. OS X... Not the same dimension.

You're kidding, right?
Had you ever used an s60, it'd only take about 5 minutes to discover all of the countless limitations the iPhone has as compared to ANY s60, and, coincidentally, a lot of carrier locked and branded phones also. We can get into it, but I don't want to embarrass you more than you've already embarrassed yourself on this site.
It looks like this will degenerate in S60 vs iPhone, which is useless. The platforms are completely different, there's no need to compare them and everybody will choose the phone which will suite him best afterall. If the iPhone is the best, than let it be, don't argue for nothing. Apple won't reach Symbian's number of devices sold.
Macboy! we missed you. It's always fun to have a symbian-basher who spends all his time on a site called all about symbian!. Btw do you know any good mac blogs that I can visit, sending countless messages telling them how Nokia/S60 is so superior to anything God (ie Steve Jobs) could ever make?
While I waited in line for my iPhone (only about 3 hours), I showed off my N95 to people around me, and I filmed the crowd at the San Francisco Apple store with my N95 😊
I'll post the video on my blog soon.
