N80 firmware V5 poll

This thread included a poll: Any trouble with N80 FW V5?

Hi, just wondering, there's a mess over some other forums, I can't swim through all of it.

I'm considering upgrading firmware to V5 (I still have the old original firmware) and I heard bad things about some versions. Since there is no downgrade, I have to consider things throughly. I'm thinking this would be of great help to other owners.

So, did you have any trouble with V5?

Note

* Yes : things you need broke. No dialing, no contacts, bad or busted camera, dead software, show stoppers.

* Minor: Slower stuff, general slowness, little used stuff like IR, etc.

* No : No trouble. Like a charm.

If you think you messed up the upgrade in any way, vote No or don't vote.

I had no problems, with one exception.
The soduko game that came built-in dissapeared and I cannot play it anymore.

u all have this prob that whenever u type a word to search a song ,the phone will lag n need to wait for a while then the word show up..😡 but when searching contact there is no prob
😡 😡 😡 😡 😡

First, thanks for your votes.

Second, 25% had showstoppers? That's pretty high, isn't it?

Any users care to elaborate on their issues? Such as trouble and phone version(zone/brand)? There's a rumor going around that most bugs come from poorly built localized versions and branded FW.

I'm hoping this info will also be useful in future searches.

Mine came with Snakes 3d.
Anyway, it's normal for it to disappear as it wasn't flashed, it was installed (as i see from Google). There are tons of free sudoku games out there tho?

How many files do you have in there? Contacts is a database, and searching is easy. In a list of files, Nokia has to search through all the tags, so each file needs to be opened and scanned unless already cached somehow (playlists?). Are you sure this was never happened before the flash and all your settings were the same? Maybe you are missing a playlist or have added more tagged MP3s. An IDv1 tag requires opening each file, skipping to the end and reading the last 128 bytes, followed by checks. It's CPU consuming even on a GHz CPU. It takes seconds to read even 40-60 files on a HDD using a PC so if you have quite a few files that's to be expected if Nokia does more than filename searches (and mine does).

Mine died after downloading the firmware upgrade. Just as it started installing, it disconnected and ask me to retry. Without being able to power back on this was impossible.
Mine is V4.0632.0.38
Date:13-10-06
RM-92
nOKIA n80(01)
code 0539363
I have tried everything suggested on the forums, but is still as dead as a door knob.
Does anyone have any ideas.

When i use the last two older firmware it does not have this prob... i update the music library gbut it is still like tis

Updated today via wire from Nokia.

Full backup, update, full restore. No problems whatsoever. Some applications could not be reinstalled, but that's not a firmware issue.

Edit:
Oh, it was slow as hell when first started. Contacts were slow, media was slow, menu took forever, until all were accessed at least once and caches were rebuild. After that it's faster, actually.

No bugs thus far.

12 people with major issues and no details? Come on, people. No hints for the rest of us?

You may help someone not ruin their phone on a specific region or version? What do you say?

i have issues with this v5 firmware update. i have a memory leak of some kind as i am having to reboot my phone twice daily (on average). If i run a few apps, and then close them it does not free up all my ram again.

Does anybody else have this issue? It is driving me insane. I have pretty much had enough of smartphones, the only thing i use it for is tomtom so i'm just thinking of getting an old 6680 and using that for tomtom and then getting a nice non smartphone, which will load my apps a whole lot quicker and more stable!!

No such issue on V5, I have a (05), was a (09) before upgrade.

Bootup leaves me with 13MB free RAM, still 13MB after camera, music, realplayer, web browsing via wifi and such.

Subsequent attempts to "compress RAM" via applications never freed over 4K.

HOWEVER.

Image viewer (gallery > images and video) leaks when zooming. Take one image, zoom all the way up to 800%, then close image, zoom another. Second or thirg gets you a memory full, still, if you exit gallery and enter again you can start all over again.

Things like YTasks (free) have a logger that logs RAM as you use applications. If you determine a certain app to leak look for a free replacer. Most if not all apps have a free replacement.

Hope this helps. What version/zone is your N80 (*#0000# says Nokia N80 (??))?

v5.0719.0.2
24-05-2007
RM-92
nokia n80 (03)

When I boot up I have 14.9MB ram available(just tried it) but it does vary!! Just before this reboot though I checked and had no apps open and only 9.8MB.

I am still getting rid of the phone I think, it frustrates me ho slow it is too. I was using a friends non-smartphone the other day, and it was so nice having apps and menu's open almost instantly.

Don't get me wrong, smartphones are very very clever, just that I can't be bothered with the hastle of them anymore. Features I will moist are copy and paste, and TomTom.

Hmmm, I've got 19.6MB after reboot with a minimal theme. Nothing to write to home about, but that 14.9MB sounds really fishy...

mine won't hold a connection to the memory card for more than 24 hours. i.e. set a theme thats on the mem card, within 24 hours its back to default Nokia and I can't run any apps from the card.

Also , I never noticed if it was this way before but I sent a txt to a number, then going back in that message in sent items there is no way to call the same number or even copy it???

Dude, you made the same mistake as me... we chose Nokia. These guys should get out of phone manufacturing. Do like me: sell your phone, and get a Windows Mobile phone. It appears Nokia will never get it right... this N80 is the worst fcu.ing phone I have ever encountered in my life. Their updates are as useless as their phones, and stupid people like us just keep on falling for their bad products.

Strangely after a month or so its now settled and is holding a stable connection to teh mem card. I really don't have a clue why.
