N95 - Rebranding possible?

10 replies · 5,584 views · Started 17 July 2007

When i got my N95 i was happy, well at least for 10 mins until I went to use the camera.

Then every time i used the camera it would crash and freeze after one or two snaps.

I thought it was a software issue. So using the threads here, i debranded and upgraded first to 11.026(or similar) then to v 12....

The camera problem is still the same. I intend to send the phone back to Orange for replacement, but am sure they will crap on about me having debranded, which is actually unfair as the phone has been faulty from day one.

So is it possible to get the phone rebranded? Or any other suggestions?

Thanks Mark

Im just guessing here, but you may have to wait until orange release a firmware update, which im holding on for too (hurry orange!!), and update it using the older firmware. Not sure if nokia updater would allow 'downdating', but worth holding out for

I would look for your nearest Nokia Service Centre (NSC) and hand it in for repair there instead of sending it back to Orange. Hopefully they will not check for debranding. However, I would advise setting the product code back to the original value (see printed label behind the battery) before doing anything else.

Alternatively, if you got the handset on Mail Order, and are still within 14 days of ordering the goods, just send it back and cancel your account with Orange.

Part of the S60 security is that you can't down grade the firmware to a lower version.

If you want to rebrand your phone you'll have to change your product code to a branded code, then connect to NSU and if there's a branded firmware version for your product code that is equal or higher than the firmware in the phone it should let you install that firmware.

I've never tried this so I can't tell you for definite, but if you can 'debrand' to the same version of firmware, there should be no reason you can't 'brand' to it either.

Nokia Software Updater won't let you go down in versions, so to be able to go back to the Orange firmware using NSU, you'd have to change the product code back and wait until Orange releases their v13 firmware, if that's ever going to happen...

You can't 'brand' or 'debrand' to the same version - NSU will only do an update if the latest firmare version for your product code is greater than the firmware version currently on your phone.

I debranded with my N73 from Voda to generic with the same version numbers. That was almost a year ago now, so maybe they've tightened down on that now.

Yeah, they must have changed how NSU works. Remember when the N95 first came out in April? People couldn't debrand using NSU when all the firmwares were still v10, had to wait until generic v11 firmware was released.

One difference between latest and April versions...

NSU used to download the FW files to a hidden location deep within the user profile ares, and deleted them as soon as the flash process was complete.
Now it simply downloads them to the Temporary Internet Files folder and leaves them there afterwards.
The benefit is that if you need to re-flash the same FW version, it doesn't need to download 113Mb over the internet repeatedly.

One reason for that is Nokia don't put the first firmware release on NSU because it's already in everyone's phones - there's no need. so the first version available on NSU is v11, that's why everyone had to wait.
