For the past week or so I've been getting "connection error" whenever I'm connected via umts/3g. I contacted Vodafone today whose only suggestion was to disable 3g. That kind of beats the point of a 3g phone! Is anyone else having similar problems? I've been using phones around where I live with 3g for a few years now and this is the first time it's been a problem. The only thing changed is the new v12 firmware really. Or something Vodafone may have done to their network.
Connection error when using UMTS/3G
I also get every now and then, there was a night last week where I couldn't make a call for ages and no-one could call me, I put on 2G only mode and it was fine. I don't know if it's a location thing, I live in Southwest London. I had it couple of times at work in the City as well, but that was in the winter and I using an N73 then, so I think it's Vodafone themselves.

If you recently debranded and upgraded you have lost you Voda specific connection settings.
Look for them on filesaveas.com and reinstall them in phone connection access point settings.
I have a non-branded version with Orange as operator (in the netherlands), and I have the same thing. It also often makes you unreachable for other people. I called Orange and the said it should be working in the location I'm in. But it fails in many spots in my city.
I switched to non-umts (it also saves battery power) and only turn it on when I need to browse the web or similar data operation.

Debranded not long after I got it a while ago. 3G was fine since then but only in the past week or so it's been playing up. Was working again today, seems very on offish. I think it seems most likely to be pointing to Vodafones end as it's working one minute in one place then not in another.
Debranding your handset won't affect how your handset switches from 3G - 2G, however currently handsets are not programmed to detect when then is a network problem, they only detect whether there is coverage.
What this means is when the 3G network goes down, as it is still transmitting a signal, the handset will not switch to 2G, which will restrict your ability to make and receive calls.
I have/had a similar problem on Orange UK. Seems to be a network issue. See this thread:

In short, it seems that many populated areas have conjested 3G masts. I'm in the city (London) and get this a lot. Varies from day to day and between peak/off peak times too.

Have you go dual gsm/3g switching enabled?

How do you get 3g going down and still transmitting?
I had this problem when I first got the phone, ie, it wouldn't make or receive calls in dual mode. Stayed that way for a few hours and then went back to normal :dontknow:
