N95 GPS = useless?

NOT ANY MORE!!!

after updating my ahndset to V12 and installing the V1.1 maps application and downloading all the uk maps i tried to find my position... after 15 minutes sitting in my garden with no luck i remembered my old bluetooth GPS reciever from my PDA... paired it with the phone and then set all the conection methods available to OFF except bluetooth GPS... rebooted the maps application, within 20 seconds i had a fix on my position!

so, its not the software at fault, tis the internal reciever!

does anyone know a way to 'boost' the internal reciever? obviously the whole point of the N95 is to not have an external GPS reciever...

for now at least i am happy tho, i can use my sat nav (with full navigation) in my car, when i want to, not what it wants to.

Mine locks within 20 secs with route 66 no problem.
Wait for initial fix (can take up to 20 mins) then AGPS kicks in every time after that!

ill try that, although its been taking way to long, its as if it just doesnt care... it says it can see 5 satellites with very clear signal, just cant find its position??!

be back in 30 minutes 😃

From a cold start (after a reboot without having run any GPS apps) my N95 with v12 firmware locks in in a couple of minutes (or just a few seconds if I'm only restarting the Maps app).

well it has eventually locked with the internal GPS, took about 8 minutes tho... ages considering the bluetooth gps gets it almost immediately.

im going to leave it connected to the gps thing for a whilst, then soft restart the application, see how it responds to that.

does the phone 'learn' the gps or something hence longer connection times at first?

*edit*

for whatever reason it just lost its lock, it actually has more satellites with better signal now tho, but its lost its lock, what the hell is it doing!

Rubbish! (Sorry, but it's true).

As others have said the N95 with R66 (or latest version of Nokia MAPS) gets a lock in under 2 minutes and keeps the lock even in cloudy weather and heavy rain.

I suggest you take your N95 back to the seller or to an NCC and have your faulty N95 GPS replaced or repaired.

I on Vodafone and I note the following - if I choose 'Vodafone Internet GPRS' as the access point everything is fine and I get a lock in a few seconds.

If I use 'Vodafone live!' access point it takes ages. I checked the phone's log afterward and see that with the 'live!' connection no data is transferred but 'GPRS' transfers the expected 5 or 6kb.

I've had problems with the 'Vodafone live!' access point before, for instance and for some reason it won't connect to Facebook mobile so I'm wondering if your long lock times are caused by being under the impression you're using aGPS when in fact the phone is keeping all the data, and therefore all the work, to itself.

The Vodafone Live! access point is only really for browsing the Vodafone Live! WAP site. It doesn't have a proper connection to the internet. You'll need to use 'Vodafone Internet GPRS' for anything else, web browsing, AGPS, Maps, Tomtom etc.

Using v12 firmware and with AGPS enabled I consistently get a lock from cold in under 30 seconds using Route66. Maps is much slower.

Route66 is not much faster with a bluetooth gps.

I just updated my firmware to v. 12.0.013 and now my GPS doesn't work at all through Maps. Ironically, I get 4 satellites when I check under Positioning but when I go into Maps and try to use GPS Position for routing it says that the GPS is not available. Also, when I open Maps it also places me continuously in Berlin...which I'm not...(and don't have any secret, subconscious desires to be there)

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

1. After Firmware flashing/upgrading, it can take up to 30 minutes to get a proper lock the first time you use GPS.

2. Did you do a restore after upgrading the Firmware? If so, that's a mistake and you should now perform a hard reset to undo the problems the restore can cause.

I had the same problem two days ago in the middle of Stockholm on a big square. No signal, but the satelite information was showing contact with 5 satelites.
I solved the problem by activating the A-GPS in addition to the internal GPS. Then my location was showing on the map within less then 30 seconds.

Checked this morning the data-log for using A-GPS. It's Sent: 1 kB and Get: 5 kB. So in total 6 kB.
It must be very expensive to use A-GPS then when beeing in a foreign country and using Roaming. 😞

Ahh, I was going to ask how much AGPS cost. I should check my logs really.

I havent compared my phone (6110 navigator) to a N95 side by side yet, so I dont know if the reciever is better.

I have switched AGPS off, and it doesnt seem to be too bad. touch wood.

Edit: Wheres the bloody data logs? Cant find them. I assume they are in the same place as the N95, as its the same OS.

Extortionate as roaming data charges are, 6kb is still a tiny amount of information.

There's no specific log for maps, the data usage can be checked in the main N95 log by looking at the last outgoing connection.

Mmm, still cant find it.

However, I have just tried my GPS without AGPS activated.

It got a lock within a minute, and kept it. This was especially impressive as I was a passenger and had it held in my hands! The was also a newish pug, which has the UV windscreens.

Just need tomtom to pull their fingers out and support internal GPS on symbian. I am starting to wonder if the 6110 has a different chipset to the N95. Sadly, not even Nokia can tell me about that.

Thanks everyone...
I did do a restore after upgrading the firmware. And I did activate A-GPS immediately after the upgrade but still having the problem.

The hard reset erases everything from the phone, right? Does that mean that I lose all my contacts, media, programmes, notes?

Expensive? What!?!? It's 6kb transferred. Even if you have to pay 120SEK (or some 15 euro)/MB sometimes when roaming (worst case) this would cost you what, 0,70 SEK.....?!

You can safely Synchronise your Contacts, Calendar, Notes and Bookmarks using PC Suite. You will lose all Apps installed in Internal Memory but most Apps installed on a MicroSD memory card will automatically re-install themselves after the hard-reset. (nothing at all is erased from a Memory Card but some SIS apps and all JAR apps need manually reinstalled).

True. N95 works better with Route66 then with Nokia maps!

I doubt you will find anyone in these forums who disagrees with you. 😉

Nokia MAPS is currently a poor 2nd best to any Commercial GPS app.

Disagree, see my post in the route66 thread about my thoughts on R66... (here: grr www .allaboutsymbian.com/forum/showpost.php?p=327793&postcount=497)

Just to update that now my GPS/Maps functionality is normal and working just fine. Perhaps it was the initial locking after the firmware upgrade that wasn't happening. Very pleased.

It would be good if that was true.

I'm with Vodafone UK and the roaming charge for data through the 'Internet' APN is 10.28 per MB, billed in 100KB increments with a 200KB minimum charge per connection.

So although AGPS only uses 6KB of data I get charged for 200KB, or about 2 a time, that adds up!

So it does. That was an horrible billing policy (minimum of 200kb per initiated connection!!??!?!).

well my gps seems to be working fine now on the internal reciever?!

is it just a glitch that the first few uses will take forever?

Hi,

after reading all the posts, it seems that it will take a while to get the internal GPS working and once connected it will work fine next time onwards. is that it ?

I checked my positioning settings. I have all 4 GPS methods enabled and there is something called positioning server which needs to be specified ?? am I doing something wrong OR just missing the point ?

I have route66 installed.

Thanks

Try just using one for now, 'Integrated GPS with assisted support' or something like that. Leave it in a wide open space for 30 mins, and then try to get locks after that. If it doesnt get a lock within 30 mins (it should be less) then something is wrong.

Dont leave it outside where its going to get nicked either, that would be a bad thing! And in theory it has to stay still.

Oh, and as for positioning server...

Your 'access point' should be whatever you use to access the net. For me, its 'Vodafone internet G....(something)'. Its should give you a list which is obvious.

And as for your 'server address' (if you have that option) you can try

supl.nokia.com

But if you have anything different in there save it as Im not sure the above is correct for your phone.
