VNC Viewer for P800

47 replies · 22,282 views · Started 14 January 2003

I need the VNC Viewer for my P800 ?, Could somebody give me a hint ? 😮

I understand that www.bitween.com are working on a P800 version of its Remote control software but again this is not available yet.

Check here: http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/software/directory/viewsoft.php?id=256
Its for the 92XX device but its java,so there is a small chance it might work.
Anyone can confirm or deny this?

You are right,it is still in beta stage.

Lazlo,if you need it really bad, maybe you can e-mail bitween and beta test it for them 😃

Today I decided I want a VNC client in my P800...
So I begun to port the reference implementation of the AT&T labs...
Very small things to do, the only big trouble is how to write with the pen, cause the stilus already work like a mouse, so I'm thinking to a "scratch-pad"...
Some shoots, in the next days the sw (I hope!)

Excellent work ginomi. This will be extremely useful.

How about a menu item to change to text input mode? You'd also need one for keystrokes like Ctrl-Alt-Del, etc.

[quote="Anonymous"]Hi,
before you start have a look at http://www.tightvnc.com/index.html.
Tightvnc is fully compatible to vnc but can operate in mode where it uses very good compression to save a lot of bandwith. Also opensource.

tnx for the suggestion, I'm going to try tightVNC...

TightVNC is a very good program. Plus, you can download a java version and/or the source for it, which makes porting it much easier 😊

*** update ***
I tried TighVNC, a very improved version of VNC.
Downloaded the java implementation, was based on the original VNC code, the same start point of mine. Applied the same modification of the VNC project, it can't work in the real phone, cause the strong compression and the jpeg support don't fit the memory of the phone... 😞
so I decided to return to the original VNC implementation, cause the real improvement of TighVNC was not useful with P800... sorry!

*** Release ***

Here the installation package of the VNC port for P800.
It's just a proof of concept, cause the limitation of the JVM image rendering (very time-expensive), cause the little time I spent.

Some hints:

- to write text, just point the pen in the right place and select "Insert Text" from menu; you have to use the scratch pad, because the jvm of the P800 accept text input from the pen/keyb. just in TextField component and not in canvas.

- to send a right click, just press the pen for 1 second.

I hope you like it. 😉

Where can I download the package of the VNC port for P800

Thanx in advance

You need to register and then login.

BTW: the registration is free 😃

I have downloaded it now and its installed on my P800
but I cant get connection to the net.

I get the message : VNC Authentication, Sorry try again.

I use gprs, does the program support gprs or only gsm.

The program ask for screen , is it the size of the remote computer or, and what is the prefix 1280'1024 ?

Hope you can help me.

Thanx in advance

You must set the screen number, i.e. the port on which VNC server is listening. Open the server properties, and look which screen is selected, or try with 0.

Gino

Gino you are the greatest.

It works perfect.

If you ever visit Denmark, send me an email, and I will give you a very good dinner on a good restaurant.

Im so happy.

wow this thing...this thing is so sweet!! I'm now using this to send ICQ/MSN messages from my desktop remotely, even though it's kinda slow over GPRS, it's working like a charm! This is definitely the most valuable and useful release for the P800!! You've done an awesome job, ginomi! Thank you!

Why? You can use TipicME to communicate with ICQ, MSN, AIM, Yahoo and finally Jabber! And it's free in the base version. 😉

Gino

For Bluetooth or USB connections:

You have to enable the loopback connection in your VNC server.
A how to here (VNCserver):
http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/winvnc.html

If you don't want to play with registry you could also dl TightVNC, which have this option in the setup menu.
http://www.tightvnc.com/

Gino

And then what? Will VNCviewer know that it has to use Bluetooth or USB? Or do we have to setup a dummy access point?

vnc is a great program to have on the p800, now i only still need a ssh client for on the p800 and ill go out to buy one .

Have you tried anything from this site? http://javassh.org/ I don't have a P800 yet--not released here in the US yet--but I'd really like an ssh app, too. Check it out & let us know what you find out. Otherwise I'll have to try to port the source to the P800, which I think will be a pain in the ass. 😃

i dont have a p800 either, there is a guy here who ported putty to the nokia 92xx http://www.s2.org/putty/ and he even mentioned the P800 porting (after i mailed him about it).

So ... if any GUI developpers want a challange ...

I am sure you would make a lot of sysadmins happy.
Oh and people with a p800, please give those apps on the javassh.org site a try.

Hmm...Looks like I originally missed that post about IM's. I just tried TipicME and it looks really promising! Just imagine how many quality programs there will be when P800's officially released!

My software wishlist for the P800:
Handy Safe 1.1 (All taken care off)
VNC (Good work ginomi!!)
Citrix ICA Client (Have not tested this, but it's suppose to be on the CD.)
Putty (Can't wait to see this)
RDP Client (port of www.rdesktop.org) to connect to win2k/xp boxes.
Opera browser (Come on, release it already!)
MSN Messenger/AIM Messenger client (taken care of with tickthingie)
A Clock program (to show a clock when the phone is idle)
A profile selection utility, that will let me use profiles.
A decent FTP client . (Any idea?)
A VPN client

That's about it, and everyday it seems someone is releasing something cool. Keep up the good work for the P800 community! 8)
