How do I find out which app is using a data connection without me knowing?

(This isn't really N95-specific)

I see from my T-Mobile payg logs that my handset is making data calls without me knowing about it. There's around three calls during each day, sending 3-5kB of data and getting around 50-80kB back. The handset logs confirm this, but don't tell me which app made the connection.

According to the task list that you get by pressing and holding the menu key, there are no apps running, but this doesn't mean much because it's clearly possible for an app to be running without showing up on that list (Truphone for instance).

Is there a 3rd-party utility that will tell me which apps are actually running?

Automatic retrieval is disabled. Messaging isn't running anyway and the email access point is set to "always ask".

Sounds like your phone could be automatically checking RSS feeds? If your suscribed to any then your phone will automatically check online at regular intervals.

You're kidding me... Even when the browser is closed?

Ah, yes, I see... but there's a setting in Web Feeds for 'automatic updates' and this is turned 'off'. The browser's access point is also set to 'always ask'.

could it be the data packet service doing handshakes ? Is it set to 'when available' ?

Do you have Shozu? I found that was making sneaky connections (though fortunately I have an unlimited data plan)

Do you've "Worldmate" installed ?

The 1st free version made also strange connections for updating, and in the setup of Wordmate no automatic updates were activated, but nevertheless . . .: he DID automatic updates . . .

There's an update available now, that doesn't it !

OK, so I found HandyTaskMan, but still couldn't see which app was doing this. I removed CoolGorilla French phrasebook thingie and the free version of WorldMate and the problem seems to have disappeared. Seems likely to me that WorldMate was the perp, even though, afaik, I had the settings all correct with no automatic updates.

The reason for my alarm at the few kB here and there is that T-Mobile payg are changing their 1 cap to a 1 per day flat rate, so even a few kB would have cost me 1.

Let's be careful out there.
