Radio on N95 with no headset

Hi all,

please tell me it is possible to use the radio on the N95 without the headset? Even if it is through external software or anything, I cant take the headset with me everywhere I go!

Anyone know anything about this?

P.S. I know the headset acts as an antenna, this is not an issue to me, I just need to get the audio out of it without having to connect the headset...

Thanks!

Ive heard some people get an old 3.5mm headphone wire and cut it so its just the end connector, and have that sticking out so the phone detects it as headset.
dunno how good a signal you get though.

A workaround, if you have good 3G coverage, and unlimited internet, is to navigate to the radio stations website, and save the stream using realplayer when it loads. Then you can get it in gallery live when your out and about quickly. Dunno if its kind to your battery though.

As you said, headset acts as an antenna. Without it, no radio (at least when it comes to the built in one. Of course you can still listen to internet radio without a headset. Just a matter of finding services for the stations that you're interested in). It's still fully possible to for instance use an audio (A2DP) bluetooth headset in addition;
- Wired headset acts as antenna.
- Transfer the sound to bluetooth headset for listening.

hi, thanks for the info, just can't have a connector or headphones with me all the time, so need a way to get it to work on its own, i understand the issue about the antenna (work at a radio station!)... could just do with it working without having to connect anything (or carrying a 3.5mm connector with me at all times!!)

thanks again

How much data is transferred during listening to the radio via 3G?
Is it a big transfer?
I'm asking, as I have limit on data transfer 0.5 GB per month.

hi, yes, streaming radio takes up quite a bit of data, to work out exactly how much, take the data rate you are streaming the radio at, for example, if the rate is 32kbps, then you have your answer right there 32kb per second, if its 64kbps, then the same applies, you can pretty much work it out like that... (it will always be slightly more than that though.

does anyone know if the N95 software can handle AAC streams? or a third party player that can be installed that DOES support AAC streams?

if your streaming over the Internet, AAC is the way forward!

Thanks

Really don't think you can divert internal radio through internal Bluetooth. At least mine won't do it.
I have an inline Bluetooth transmitter which I plug in to the bottom piece of the remote cable. That works!

Guys/Girls,

Point your browser to www dot bbcradio.mobi

It has Real Player streams for Radio 1, 2, 3, 4FM, 4LW, 5 Live, 5 Live sports Extra, World Service, World 24 Hour News, Cymru, Scotland, nan Gaidheal, Ulster & Wales.

Also Arabic, Portugese, Spanish, Russion, Persian and Urdu!

Along with a ton of local radio stations, which are handy for live football commentary if your team is playing away from home in one of these regions, and you can't find commentary at your local station.

There's also some WMP streams, which has BBC 6 Music and BBC 7, which can't be found on RealPlayer.

don't think that the headset act as an antenna. stuck my ipod headphone in it and manage to get radio

As correctly noted, any wire connected via the headphone socket acts as an electrical receiver. Doesn't have to be the original Nokia wired headphones.

hi all, sorry to bump the thread, but has anyone had any advance on this solution?

I need to use the radio on the N95 without a headset (or even a 3.5mm connector)... I know the headset is needed as an aerial, this is not an issue (reception). I just need to use the radio without connecting anything to the 3.5mm socket...

Any ideas?

Thaks.

I tried out the www bbcradio.mobi, but everytime I keep getting unable to connect ... has anybody managed to get it working?

Why can't you use a 3.5mm connector? Perhaps if we understood yoiur reluctance we might me able to suggest something...

That is impossible with the standard Nokia firmware, as the player refuses to play without something plugged into the 3.5mm socket.

It will happily play through the speakers if you subsequently unplug the connector though. I have no idea why you can't just keep a 3.5mm plug (with no lead at all) in the bottom of your pocket. You've got room for the phone!

EDIT: I take that back, you must have the connector plugged in at all times.

As davecozens says, perhaps if we knew a little more we could advise you better.

I use the Nokia Internet Radio prog. via WiFi for hands/headset free listening. Loads of stations worldwide to suit all tastes and works well on both my N95 and N95 8gb.
