The N95 v12 keypress bug isolated?

I think I've worked out why the missing keypress bug in the v12 firmware occurs and how to avoid it. But I need some more data points from AAS readers. Read on for more.

Read on in the full article.

Hi Steve,

I *never* have the MMM in the background, but i do have the keypress bug. How do you mean 'Exit' it? Any special way or just exiting it? 😊

Regards,
Corwin

Ya , how to get MMM in bg, even if I press the menu key after opening the MMM it does not appear in the tasklist.

Simply pressing Exit within the multimedia menu seems to really close it (unlike Contacts, for example).

So, guys, does this work for you, or not?

Steve

Sorry Steve but your theory doesn't work for me. It is very erratic when it happens but on my N95 it seems that if I press too many keys quickly then it starts to happen especially if I am on a roll when texting. If I slow down and give it time then the bug seems to hardly ever happen.

I don't disagree...

I've not noticed any keypress problem, but I never use the multimedia menu, or always exit it if it is mistakenly launched.

Your theory doesn't work for me either, sorry. I never use the multimedia key (too slow).
It happens very randomly for me and does tend to be when I am doing rapid keypress, usually going between menu folders when I notice it most.

OK, modified theory:

The keypress bug happens when either the Multimedia menu OR Music player are running in the background.

I'm convinced it's a bug in the multimedia event loop....

Steve

There might be something to your amended theory. I was listening to music and doing a web search with Opera Mini yesterday. That was the first time I ever noticed the phone missing keystrokes.

That said I am not using any multimedia in the background now and I have had a couple of missed strokes during this post.

Theory still doesn't work for me, I very rarely use the Music Player either.

To test it I have just rebooted my phone, nothing running, Hit Menu, then entered a folder, exit folder, enter another, exit, enter another, exit didn't register.

Sorry Steve, your theories don't work for me.

I get missed key presses when there's nothing running in the background, and after a fresh boot (meaning there can't be any eroneous processes running)

Although I'm sure you're partially right - Sendo had a similar bug in an early X firmware, which was finally attributed to a bug in the way the phone checked for events in the "standby" mode. It was checking too quickly I think, thus missing the odd action.

sorry mate.. I dont have any of them in memory and the only thing that is there is Roadsync (and Worldmate as that is also a hidden resident).

This is so annoying - especially when you are doing emails!! 😞

Hi Steve,
Like you, I never need the multimedia menu, but mistakenly open it occasionally. Do you know if there is a way of remapping the Multimedia key in the OS, or using third party software?
Thanks,
JonB

I don't get the bug at all now. However I have had the bug, so I know what to look for. I think I had the bug a fair bit when I first flashed to the new firmware. I have since factory-reset the phone and I don't get the bug.

The only difference I can think of is that I only install software to the memory card now: never to the phone. Perhaps that is a common factor - installing software to the phone memory causes the problem?

Hmm.... well, all I can say is that with Music and Multimedia not running, I can't seem to reproduce the missing keypress bug at all.

Anyway, let's hope that Nokia get to the bottom of this!

When you first turn on the phone, hold the menu key the moment it gets to the active standby screen. You'll notice a couple start up items that will disappear quickly disappear off the list. On my are 'anykey' 'vcomman ...' and 'Autolock'.

But sometimes on start up, the phone tends to take its time and be stuck in the active standby screen along with 3 tasks above active app list until it eventually unfreezes and leaves.

My guess 'anykey' is causing both the above and missing key stroke thing.

I still has that problem even when "standby" is the only background application.

I usually close all apps so only "Standby" is running and I still get keypress errors. Sometimes when I slide my phone open just to type in the unlock key it doesn't register some... so annoying. I don't think the multimedia key has much to do with it IMO, I never press that button anyway (way too slow for me)

Well now that I think of it... one thing that I *can* reproduce, although I'm not sure if it's a bug or a new "feature," is when I hold the multimedia key to get the music player started, it doesn't do anything, no matter how long I hold it. I have to let go, then hold it again, and it will work. When I exit the music player and try to open it again with the same method, it won't work. Have to let go, then hold again... you get the idea.

you kind of might have a point there. i don't use the multimedia menu except when i need to use the radio. what i have noticed is that i dont get any missed keypresses but when i do want to use the radio and i press the multimedia key it does not work on the first try and even sometimes when i long press to go to music i get missed press too. i have to long press twice to get a response. apart from that no other missed presses.

Hi,
I have the same bug with v12, but it seems not to be related to MM key, but to the amount of free RAM or CPU. Any app opened in background does affect the keypressing, the bigger this app, the harder it gets to type.

Never had any problems with they keypress bug - on the other hand I rarely have many apps running at once on my phone so might be why.

Keypress bug does not have any relationship with MMkey. It just stays there.

Let's hope Nokia provides a mapping function for the MM key with the next firmware release.
I also never use the MM key and already thought about modifying it inside so that nothing happens when one presses the key, but then I realized it is used to switch on the player.

Well I never go the keypress problem until I installed the new maps application (to the phoen memory)

So does anyone get the keypress problem that has not installed the maps 1.1 version???
