The FCC website (US regulator) currently has some information about the Nokia N95 8GB on its website. Hardware changes include a reworked back section with the removal of the camera lens cover to allow for a bigger battery. The top slide media keys are now slightly raised and the phone itself is black. There are also some interesting hints about the software in the manual with references to N-Gage gaming and the Nokia Music store. Read on for more.

Well, it's not a huge surprise, but this must be the first confirmed (albeit slightly unofficially) Next Gen N-Gage compatible device. It's nice to see that the N-Gage application will be downloadable, so a lot of current device owners will be able to get the games from day one.
Having a userbase of perhaps several million right from the launch should help to overcome the problems the original N-Gage had in getting third party support.
Yes interesting to see the multimedia key develop into something quite significant. I think offering a content key is quite a good way to offer this. Its one solution to avoiding the complexity of an open platform with lots of extras bits while still providing an easy way to get at multimedia bits.
Though I can hear the critics having a go at two different UIs / ways to do things already (there is merit to this in a way).

Well... it's a matter of taste, but I've always thought that a good UI provides as many ways as possible to do something, because everyone has their own favourite way which they find most intuitive. You can access most functions in Windows or Mac OS through the keyboard, or mouse, or menu systems, or a combination of all three. There must be a dozen different ways of finding and opening a file in Windows.
The multimedia screen seems pretty much a favourites list or bookmarks list. Windows has its Start menu as well as the conventional icon system, Mac OS also has a chunk of on-screen icons as well as its usual menus, it's not a crazy thing to have a section of the UI which highlights important applications (and indeed that's what the S60 active standby already does).
What would be a good complement to the multimedia screen would be to have the My Own key lead to an automatically updated list of the most frequently opened files and applications. It would let people get to stuff that they know they used but can't remember how to find.

This looks like it still has internal memory and mass memory. Not 8 GB internal memory plus a microSD slot 😞

Why remove the microsd? There is alot of flexibility in having a removable card.
why make the 8gb internal? An card of such size included in the box would have sufficed.
The new look is quite ugly.
The new software inclusions and tweaks are welcome.

The text is from the new N95's manual. There is no download link. The preview application it mentions would be built into the new N95.
The actual Next Gen N-gage application will not be available until the Next Gen N-Gage platform launches some time in the next few weeks or months.

It could be that removing the memory card slot allowed them to fit a bigger battery. Devices like these are always about tradeoffs really, there's always something that suffers whenever you make alterations.

It's of a new version of the N95 for the US market. It's like the N93 and N93i looked different but were basically the same phone.
There's a good chance that the N81 will be announced too. Nokia usually announce 2 or 3 Nseries phones at a time.
The ting about internal memory is that it is there from the start. While I imagine most people reading this site wouldn't think twice about buying a memory card there are people who might not want to / cant be bothered. At the end of the day 8GB is a big chunk of memory. Its very few people who are going to be willing to swap out several 4GB cards.
I would anticipate that the pricing will be slightly above that of an N95. Like the N95 it'll start if pricey and fall as we go.

Well as nice and interesting as this looks it seems for once the US is getting a better specified device than the rest of the world. Really i hope Nokia do the sensible thing and just include all the bands available and make it a truly world device as that would be the best solution in MO i don't see the need for location specific devices in this time, when we live in a Global market why not just produce one device for all. As economies of scale would reduce costs and whilst they are at it all devices should have world wide warranty support my only other disappointment with Nokia and others manufacturers policy.

I read a comment somewhere saying that Nokia's unwillingness/inability to put in all frequencies has something to do with their dispute with Qualcom and that it would be fairly expensive to do so at this time due to licencing fees. Not sure if there is any truth to that.
Hmm.. still not sure if the screen is really bigger or not.. Have to wait till 29th I guess.

After looking some more at the FCC pictures of this 8 GB N95, the screen is definitely larger...
The phone is about the same overall height and width, but the top housing is quite different!
In fact, the top housing on this new N95 is wider than on the original N95 (it's now the same width as the bottom housing, instead of being narrower than the bottom housing like on the current N95).
The frame around the screen is about the same thickness, but the keypad/D-pad block is now shorter and wider.
PS: Interestingly, the internal FCC pictures were taken with a 1st gen Nokia N95 - just check the reflection on the screen 😊

Will it have the 128MB RAM chip? With only 20MB free RAM the current N95 is not so good.
I got a P1i, best part is the extra RAM... I can't see the N81 and N95 8GB being much of an improvement if they are short on battery life and RAM.
Liking the iPod-like touch scrollwheel on the N81's d-pad... that should catch on hopefully. Controls surrounding the d-pad are still a mess, the gaming buttons above the screen are a great move.
Now if SonyEricsson could integrate the next gen PSP into their phones we'd have a fight on our hands...

O2 online shop told me that they expect the N95 8Gb to be in their shops from Monday 8th October. I'm due an upgrade and will be upgrading to this new phone only for the .2 inch bigger screen. .2 inches can make all the difference.
I rang the O2 online shop yesterday and they told me they were getting the N95 8GB tomorrow (01/11/07)??
