I'm thinking of buying this toy. But after reading through the various threads, it seems like quite a number of improvements can still be made.
In particular, i'm wondering if a firmware upgrade will be able to solve the following rants (some of them are my own):
1. Voice recording while making a phone call
2. Allow renaming of voice recording files so that they can be ported back to the PC.
3. T9 predictive text input
4. Configurable hardware buttons (in particular, the browser button)
5. Fax capability
6. Separate ring volume control for alarm / ringtone / message alert
7. Alarm will still sound if the phone is switched off. No need to use flight mode in the night.
8. Support for >128mb MS duo
9. Ring tone will sound on both the phone and the earpiece when playing mp3
10. Louder speakerphone volume
11. Allow rotation of screen, so that it's easier to read those word documents.
12. Scheduled power up / power down (eg switch on phone at 8 am from Mondays to Fridays and swtich off phone everyday at 1 am)
13. Allow MP3 to be used as ringtones
Anyone have anything else to add?
If it can be fixed with a firmware upgrade, then it's ok to buy first.

Well, add this: for some reason, the phone settings (display zoom) get lost everytime I reboot my phone! Maybe that's a bug?!

I'm counting on it gadgetguy but i wouldn't suggest buying the P800 right now, wait a while and see how things develop.
I believe that the most of the problems you mentioned can be fixed, because they are on the software side, the issue here is: are SE going to do something about it.
This device has a great potential,i just hope it lives up to it.

A High-tech phone like this MUST have some bugs in its first sw version, so buy now and upgrade, or wait for an upgrade 😊
I used the 7650 for about 5 months and used P800 for a month now and downloaded almost all apps for them, and from my experience I think:
1. This can be fixed with a 3rd party app, or maybe a software upgrade.
3. There is handwriting recoginition and QWERTY keyboard to replace that, and maybe some apps will fix this.
4. This also will be fixed with a 3rd party app, same on 7650 with the screenshot app.
5. MAYBE some 3rd party apps will offer fax.
6. You can fix this by playing with the same ringtone settings.
8. Thats just a rumour.
10. Speaker works like a charm with me.
12. 3rd party apps can do this like in 7650 with EPROFILES.
13. Soon SIDs & MP3s will be used as ringtones.
And dont forget that the phone is still not out yet in many countries, so u must wait to have loads of apps.
and like I said first, Its better to you to buy it now and upgrade, the bugs you mentioned nobody cares about them, and sure will be fixed 😃
:P
Hello,
I hope like you that future firmwares will solve many bug or missing
features. But the user's manual doesn't mention the procedure to
upgrade the P800 firmware. Does that mean that all users that want
to upgrade the firmware wil have to go to their SE Service Center
to do so and pay for that ?
Any information about this problem would interest me.
Christian
Upgrade is free in SE service center.

The first comercial version of the firmware for the 7650 was waaay to stable, the p800 is not even close.
The 128 MB MMC limit is not a roumor.
And it seems to me a lot standard features depend on third party apps.
QWERTY keyboard, what are you talking about?
The P800 MS limit thing is not yet confirmed
The P800 MS limit thing is not yet confirmed
The curent firmware supports only <= 128 MB MMC.
Maybe later, much later, also, anything larger then 128 MB might have a MemoryGate so....
Dont get me wrong,i want the P800 to be a success, but the conditions say otherwise.
I agreed that N7650 first release was very suitable as compared to P800. I saw my friend using it (though not offically released in Singapore), he was so unhappy. He changed it to Nokia 3650 within 2 days.
Anyway, SE handset is always coming with firmware upgrade. I used to have T68 and has to go the SE Svc Centre monthly for latest firmware. I was really sick of this.... hope P800 stablises FAST!

I'd like (in no order at all, and in addition to above):
1. Move forward and back within a sound clip, e.g. a mp3. Winamp for P800? 😊
2. VPN-client
3. Telnet, ping, dig, ipconfig, etc. capabilities. Basic networking tools.
4. VNC client
5. The ability to back up less than the whole "disk".
6. Being able to synchronize with my Outlook without bugs. (High priority 😊
7. Video-capture, not just single images through the camera.
8. More space. More space. More space.
This is a kick-ass product. Surely SE knows this. Too bad if they don't make sure it remains that way too ...
3.maybe something can be done in java, ther is a java telnet client for the 7650.
4.VNC client is beeing developed by bitween as we speak.
7.Well,SE still havent released the required API needed to develop videor capture app.Something might be done with Reverse Ingeneering.
8.More space? what for?
The other issue are bugs that SE need to fix in future firmware releases, lets hope that they will.

The P800 uses the Memory Stick DUO (1/3 size of Memory Stick, designed for mobile communication and light-weight compact digital imaging and portable audio devices), and Sony will release the 64 MB and 128 MB versions next quarter and they have no plans to release anything larger for at least another year.
Meanwhile, Sony is also working on a double-sided versions of Memory Stick (256 MB, 512 MB) and future version of high capacity Memory Stick dubbed Memory Stick PRO (256 MB, 512 MB, 1 GB, 4 GB) which will NOT be backward compatible. And these products are NOT even designed for use with mobile phones simply shown by that they even have a different form factors. (Duh!)
So the bottom line: Expandabililty wise, whether the P800 will suppot >128MB MSDUO, current users will be on-top and safe for at least another 15 months, and who knows what new toy they'll come up with in the next year! :P Maybe we'll all be talking about the P9000 by that time.

Anyway, largest capacity of the MSDUO for P800 users will be 128 MB.
At least in the next two years.
Don't forget that magic gate works on the P800.
Don't forget that magic gate works on the P800.
It does? Are you sure? It would be great if it is true.
Can you post an url or something on the subject?
a fw upgrade could easily let the P800 support more than 128mb... but i dont think that sony is planning on making more than 128mb memory stick duos..... because they are working on the new memory stick pro
it is quite a shame about Sony making MS pros......man.......but 128 is ok for now.....or maybe we can by like two MS's.....if needed.
It works, I'm sure about that. But you just want to reformat it to work on the P800.

I think such support is great. If you want a firmware upgrade from Nokia you have to send him to Nokia, and you can only hope that you get it back in less than 3 weeks. For a SE firmware upgrade you only have to wait 20 minutes or so!!!! And, at least SE is supporting and upgrading their products!!!
Many thanks to all the guys and gals who have provided your input. 😃
I'm now back as a registered user.
I have made up my mind. I will buy the p800 when a 64mb or 128mb MS duo reaches Singapore.
Let's hope that SE fixes the outstanding issues ASAP.

Well, on Symbian Nokia phones perhaps, (and I know that's what this forum is about...) but not on the "normal" Nokia phones (as far as I know)...

And would such a firmware upgrade also increment the number of phisical electrical contacts on the card bus as well?...
You don't know much about memory addressing issues do you?
Hi all,
I'm new to this forum as I consider to buy a P800 as soon as it hits the shelves here in Singapore.
I'm quite aware about its features but I would like to have some further ideas from you folks.
So far it was my determination never to touch Memory Sticks. I have to change my mind because of the P800. I have no idea what a MS Duo is. Is it possible to use it at a MS card reader, or in my case, at a X's drive?
Further on , I understand that the P800 can view word and excel files. Does it mean, it cannot edit or create new word or excel files? Is there any chance of a third party application? This is very important to me. Anyone knows more about it?
Regards
hegisin
You better lose yourself with the P800
The phone that lets you on you better never let it go, oh
There is only one real phone, do not buy a nokia or a moto again
Cuz opportunity comes once in a lifetime, yo..............................................................

😊 😊
I have a few wish list in the new FW upgrade.
1) Hope they could fix the problem with SMS alerts continues ringing even reading the new SMS message.
2) To have "Profile" just like N7650 which is running on Symbian6.
3) Fix the image quality on the Viewfinder.
