The launch of Nokia's new marketing campaign for the likes of the US-spec N95, "Open to", is also made notable by the availability for sale in consumer electronics shops (well spotted Stefan), independent phone shops and chains (in addition to Nokia's own flagship stores). So far only stores in New York and San Francisco are listed, but you can bet this list will expand...

Forgot to mention LA too 😊
This should be great news for the American consumer, make people realise they can use the same phone on many networks and so switch to whichever network is cheapest or whichever phone is best. More competition almost always means lower prices and better service, at least in the telecoms industry.
One development which might tie in with this in the future is the auction of newly free spectrum in the US for wireless services. Google's intervention ensured that the spectrum on sale would be open to any device the user wished to use on it, as long as the device doesn't damage the network. Whoever wins the bidding won't be allowed to dictate which devices can access the spectrum, in other words sim-free phones should be protected from "roadblocks".
Gotta love the "in your face iPhone" attitude of the "Open" slogan.. lol..
The retail location search page is a little confusing, as when I enter my zip code, it does update the map, but keeps the NYC list of stores. Sure, they are apparently the closest ones, but they should at least say something like "there are no stores currently available in your area; please consider the following stores in NYC".
They've added LA to the list, now. I'm surprised they haven't added Chicago, if only to advertise that they have a flagship store on Michigan Avenue. Anyway, it's good to see a manufacturer finally trying to legitimize the unlocked, SIM-free phone concept in the U.S. I'm disappointed Apple didn't do this (as they could also have given it some momentum).
I don't know about this option. :con?
