the N70 has 22MB shared memory compared to N95 8G 128MB SDRAM.....very fast compared to a N70

I consider upgrading to this latest smart phone from Nokia, but I have some reservation on the earlier 6230 model. I know it is an old mens phone-and I am too. So could anyone confirm that this Smart phone has lived up to making its functions to work with more mainstream formats and that Nokia will look after the update to correct obvious errors in its OS?
1. I had difficult to use the Nokia suit for this phone with (my up to date) PC.
2. Nokia has no updates for the 6230 model and I am still feeling to be left out in the cold with it.
3. The-files only copying would not allow download of addresses and other notes-date details.
4. The voice recording is limited to 3 min. and no way to change to longer.
5. The proprietary recording formats (voice-video) required me to invest in an other package to convert its output to commonly used MP3-AVI.. formats, even if this phone have MP3 playback.

err, yeah, great review, fairly in depth for the points covered, but i can't help there's bits missing.

What about the GPS? and the A-GPS? any improvements there?

I've owned both for a while and I can say yes the n95 8GB is the greatest phone so far! There is no camera cap/shutter but I just put it into a microfibre pouch. You'll find they are used for glasses so it keeps the phone clean and when I need to wipe the lens or screen it's always there! 😉

My wishlist:
* Add qwerty keyboard
* Fill the entire slider with a high resolution wide screen so it would be something like 3.5 - 4 inches. They could move the d pad and buttons to the slider part or use iphone stlye touchscreen. There will no longer be the multimedia playback keys. I don't really see the point of these buttons because the D-pad can do exactly the same thing. The only potential use is for gaming and so far hasn't been implemented.
* Improve camera quality e.g. xenon flash, more megapixels, optical zoom, better lens etc.

Anyone else want to add what they'll like to see?

Hi

In response to the youtube question:

I got my n95 8gb approx 24 hrs ago after a fairly long winded decision making process. I've always been a sony erricsson man for reasons I can't really explain and I've never been a mac user but all the adverts etc had me thinking an iphone was going to be the way fwd. In the uk they are running a free data service so you get to do all that pinching malarky and youtube stuff for free. The ads make you think mobile internet shuld only be viewed on an iphone and that your tunes will be better and so on.
The reality is that unlimitted data useage is a 7 bolt on and unless you have cover art for all your tunes (which you might have bothered with but if you're like me and either d/l stuff off the internet or just rip cd's without the cover art, cover flow is a waste of time). The internet? well appart from the pinch and zoon gimick, apple have decided not to support java, windows media, flash etc etc so other than embedded images your not going to see a great deal more than you would on an n95 8gb.

This is my first nokia ever and I've got to say I am so glad I bought it, the internet is great, you've got the ability to look at a whole page and zoom on the bit you want, maybe not as gracefully as with an iphone but it does the job and well. Far more of the embedded bits and pieces are supported by the n95 8gb (probably the n95 too but i've never used one so can't comment). You tube works perfectly as far as I can see. I've looked at tonnes of stuff today over my home wifi connection and all the videos look spot on.

The big plusses as I see them over the iphone are: Camera is so much better its laughable, you've got 5mega pixels and zoom, plus night mode. You have a video shooting option which is really good quality given its a phone. You can send all manner of comms, sms, mms, emai, bluetooth, infrared.. etc. The iphone makes a big deal out of photos, multimedia etc but you have a rubbish camera (not much better than an erricsson k750i) no capacity to shoot video and you can't even send the photos you do take unless its over email - where the hell is mms on the iphone!?!?! The iphone doesn't even let you share pics, tunes etc by bluetooth whereas the n95 does. I can't count the number of times I've been in the pub or a club with some mates and either blue toothed them a song or a random photo. The idea of having all these tunes and pics, vids on an i phone, showing them to your mates and then having to email the files to them rather than just bluetooth is just crazy.
Another great thing about the n95 8gb over the iphone is software. OSx as far as I've heard is locked down and there's no healthy third party software scene. I've spent the last day downloading something called rotate me and learning how to self sign certificates through symbian.com. My n95 now flips from portrait to landscape instantly as I turn the phone on its side for better viewing of photos, web pages, games etc. Just like the iphone it has an "accelerometer" . All I can say about that is get on youtube and search on n95 8gb and you'll see some videos of what rotate me does. Also nokmote uses the accelerometer to allow you to play games/use your n95 by tilting it rather than touching buttons. Its only in beta stages at the moment but its awesome being able to play a driving game in landscape on your phone and steer by tilting the phone left or right rather than having to use the various buttons. Plus you've got tv out so you can plug the phone into your tv/monitor and play games in full screen and using your phone as the controller. Plus the phone jack acctually allows you to choose what head phones you use with the phone. The iphone has made the headphone jack so unreachable you are pretty much restricted to either using their headphones or canibalising a decent set of headphones to get them to reach into the jack. To me its just arrogance for apple to claim the iphone is 5 yrs ahead of everyone else, force you to use itunes, not let you assign mp3's as ringtones, make you use the white headphones etc.
The user interface and touch screen interfaces are superb but the rest is either lacking or just a product of apple trying to force you to use their products for everything. If you look at what the iphone does, the expense 269 plus contract restrictions and the fact you can't even expect the sealed in battery to last the 18 months you have to sign up for, you'd have to be mad to buy an iphone. How many people do you know with an ipod who've had to take it back to the shop because the battery stopped working and they want to charge you 100 for a new one. With any normal phone you can buy as many spare batteries as you want and if one runs down or starts loosing its ability to recharge you just stick a new one in and carry on. No waiting 3 days and pay through the nose to have some gonk smash your phone apart to get the battery replaced.
I may have gone on a bit of a rant but a week ago i was on the verge of buying an iphone despite the shortcomings until i stumbled across a ipone vs n95 8gb review and since then and especially since having an n95 i really can't see any reason for buying an iphone (iphones have google maps, n95 has proper gps!)

Looks like a great phone; I've been with SE for 4 years and have been convinced to convert. Had a play with one in Phones4U, an absolute pleasure i might add, and have been informed that 02 will be pushing it from Jan 21st 08 - just in time for the upgrade.

Hi,, i am about to buy a nokia n95 8gb. I previously had a n91 then a n95 but i dont like at all the sound quality of the n95 through the headphones-not hifi quality like the n91. So please can anyone tell me if n95 8gb is better in terms of sound quality if hifi or like the n91. Thanks

A high quality 5mp chip behind a constantly dirty and sooner than later scratched lens ... awwww-some. 😞

Wish they'd release the 95-3 in europe too. 8Gig cards cost just 100€ already and the smaller screen at the same rez just means crispier image quality. More ram and better battery was all the original n95 needed...

O2 currently offers free 8gb card with n95 classic according to metro advert.

Believe me, on n95, the non rescessed screen is so much better despite the same resolution. The recessed lens is also quite resistant to scatches, for me,then again it might be that I am not stuffing it into a pocket full of keys. Lens is also easier to clean in comparison to the classic, which was a pain. with out the lens cover, the phone feels better too. The extra big screen and huge ram, and its color made it a better choice over n95-1 and 3 for me; n95 8gb US edition is gone to be interesting, though when that get launched, and made mass availible, there are probably going to be hardware revision for n82 as well.

I compared my n95 8gb to a mate's n95 (which looks identicak to n95-3 accept for the lens), and n95 looks like a toy, a maximum of 30 mb of RAM makes perform like a joke. I got my n95 about 1.5 months ago, and I don't have the least regret about it, given i got it free on contract upgrade. 😎

1. Are you using an 'up to date' PC with less than 512 mb of ram? It takes a fast PC to smoothly run pc suite. N95 8gb also can act as a mass storage unit, basically allows 8GB of memory to be used just like a USB, without PC suite.

2.FW update or updated hardware? 6233 or 6300 replaces 6230, and since it runs on s40 v2, you cannot update firm over air; the product has been out for how long? surely if its FW updates that you are after, you must realise that the trail has gone cold, nokia probably thinks its mature enough.

3.You can use the nokia back up app for this function, in the future, after updating FW, you will keep your data, for now...🙄

4.On n95 8gb, you may record 1 hour of high quality at a time if there is sufficient amount of memory left.

5.You can play most avi files on n95 8gb with free app from Divx called Divx player, now i wonder why they came up with that name. MP4 is natively supported; you can record VGA video @ 30 fps in 3gp or MP4. And record WAV with built in app; or mp3 with add on app.

hi,

i have the nokia n95 8gb version, im really happy with it but i have 2 questions.
1. How do i secure my messages with a password?
2. I have about 3 gig music on it but only 25 songs are displayed in the mp3-player, the rest of it is located on the harddrive. How can i put all of it on the mp3-player? so i dont have to pick a new song everytime?

many thanks

lil wayne ringtones. eminem ringtones. chris brown ringtones. britney spears ringtones.

what is the most common defect of this smart phone? does the memory usually crashes down?? thnks

n95 8 giga better phone nokia had made it till now .febrauary 2008...associated with all features , more faster , ,,even better than nokia e90 which does not have a T.V out cable.

really good review.

just got this phone in the uk and i love it !! x x

Don't understand this critism really. There are much better free video editing programs on the net and as for the memory..just put picture, video etc on you pc and move it to a memory card..how much hassle is that ?

Much prefer a stable phone than these extras.

the phone itself is probably one of the best symbain cell phones. Nevertheless, it is pathetic that it takes me 1 hour for transfering 2,5GB to the internal flash disk - approx 30% slower than a normal n95 with a micro sd card. Secondly the media player sync doesnt work correctly.

btw, I am pretty open minded and up for everything; but my flying visit to symbian 3rd edition ended abruptly. Its not flexible at all; no customizable homescreen, poor calendar (no posibility to replace the original one) and reading, managing etc. email is still a pain in the arse. Sorry for mention that - i know these are os restrictions (but I would get very angry - buying an E90, also series 60 3rd fp1, and being forced to do business with such a poor email client)

After two weeks i switched back to windows mobile. nokia should consider itself as pretty lucky that none of those windows mobile phones features such a great camera and stereo sound...

regards
irm

I agree with you4irm I don't mind for the N-series email clients and calendar being somewhat less user friendly than Windows or Blackberry, but for the E90 it's a definite turn off. That's why I have not purchased the E90...IMO the old S80 was better for business users than the current S60. Although you really can't beat the N-series phones right now on Multimedia. I have the N82 and I feel it is the best phone out there for that front.

...that's true, I own a 9500 as well but one of the hinges broke 1.5 years ago. I have chosen business functionality over multimedia. i was hoping to get a cell phone which offers me both...

Yeah me too....I think the next phone that's going to offer both that's been recently announced will be the SE X1...I'm excited about that device as it will have WM business user friendly software and Sony Ericsson Multimedia know how.

Can you use Skype with this phone?
How? Is it possible to unload and install Skype like on MS XP?
Thanks.
JA

Yes you can watch Youtube bot not content on websites like Newgrounds

I have been offline for a while and reading your reply just now!

You are a Gem and thank you for the tips and help you have given me about questions I could not ask in shops since no one can possibly know all ins and outs about all their products given the fast pace.

Cheers Istvan

will this new n95 8gb be able to sen dmy phone book to my in car screen (jaguar x type ) ive been told that some new phones do not allow this to happen

I Can Proudly Say I Have Owned My N95 Since the 3rd Of April 2007, Its Release Date.

The Phone Is Good Yes. Amazingly Good Actually, But It Has Its Flaws, Like How Slow It Is! The Fact It Only Lasts 2 Days MAX With Full Battery Also If You Want to Record Anything Bring Your Charger Along Because It won't Last 5mins.

The Camera Is Absolutely Amazing, I don't Think I Have Ever Taken So Many Pictures In One Year Before. But I am Fed Up With It, Needing A New One, Everyone Has the N95 Now & I am Bored Of It.

The N95 Would Be Perfect If It Wasn't Such A Smart Phone & Trying To Be Everything At Once! The Speakers Are AMAZING On It. I Proudly Play My Music Louder Than Everyone Else, That's If I Know My Battery won't Run Out Mid Song!

Good Phone, Too Much On It!

Somone asked does the phone play FLV files, No phones play .FLV files.
The YouTube mobile site and other sites like BlogTV which have a mobile version use 3gpp streaming.
You are watching a streaming 3gpp file, not an FLV file.
They can be served from Helix or Darwin server.
The Nokia N95 8GB also has RealPlayer, so you can watch RealMedia, i have tested it on my own Helix server, It can play streams/files and live broadcasts no problem, and it works great!.
Best phone out there 😊 I agree shame about no video editor or lens cover.
But i love my Nokia N95 8GB phone.

Hello,
Maybe some of the readers here will help me. I got this issue with my N95(8gb), I checked the memory status and i saw available space 8 Gb near the empty disc icon but free are only 170 Mb. I formated the disc but still the same . It`s a soft errror...or something else?

right yesterday i had the nokia n95 8gb.
ive only got 59 songs and everytime i try to connect threw bluetooth its sayin my memorys full.

i think i need to save them to mass memory, but i dont know how.
anyone help.?!
