The N95 gets even more iPhone-ish?

How come these technologies didn't surface nine months ago? First we had that early beta of Rotate Me, with auto sensing of attitude to swivel the N95's screen. And now (from the forum) comes news of an accelerometer project demonstrating the power and response of the N95's sensor with a moving ball example, with even vertical movement sensed and reacted to. Link and notes below.

Read on in the full article.

Well, I would not be surprised if Nokia did collect data from focus groups etc. on how well the sencors are holding up (in terms of durability) in real world after 2 years, have plenty of staff walking around witn N95s with Beta Labs applications in them etc. These sensors will be integral part of e.g. TS S60 devices in the future.

Man, the posibilities for this are endless... It's suprisingly and exceedingly responsive and accurate... Works beautifully...

Tons of games, pedometers, more games... Maybe an interactive homescreen plugin of some sort... Menu selections, using it as a mouse...

I mean, I've been sitting here bouncing around this little ball for the past 15 minutes, and it doesn't even do anything... I've even set it on my desk, and just rapped my fingers on the desk next to it, and the ball moved... amazing

I knew the N95 had the level sensor, but did anyone even know there was an accelerometer tucked inside this amazing device???

This phone never ceases to amaze me... And seriously, I can't get over how accurate/responsive the accelerometer is...

Amazed,
Phono

woow its so freakin accurate :O

Btw. try this in landscape mode, dont really know what happens but something gets messed up

what happens in landscape is because it hasnt been programmed properly for landscape, if you tilt what is now side to side, it goes up and down, and vice versa.

And the source code too! I'm going to enjoy this, possibilities are endless, who can be first to market?

Nokia N95 self-contained Wii style games.

I'm pleasantly surprised! What fun to find out there's a whole *thing* in your phone that no-one knew was there! Maybe I won't get rid of this N95 for an iPhone just yet.. ..let's see what Ngage has to offer!

I love the fact my N95 is many things in one...in my pocket. Now I can tell people it's a spirit-level as well!

N93i has the sensor also. e.g. It can run the 5500 game Groove Labyrinth from 20.0.084 onwards (though screen resolution doesn't match). See the comments section here: blogs.s60.com/s60multimedia/2007/10/use_wiimote_on_s60_3rd_edition_1.html

the url for groove labyrinth: europe.nokia.com/A4273039.

N95-8GB works with the groove labyrinth game also btw (same screen size issues notwithstanding).

The SDK linked in the S60 blog mentioned above is here for those interested (ignore that it only says for 5500): forum.nokia.com/info/sw.nokia.com/id/4284ae69-d37a-4319-bdf0-d4acdab39700/Sensor_plugin_S60_3rd_ed.html

"How come these technologies didn't surface nine months ago?"

Because Nokia - just like Microsoft - is clueless, they can just copy Apple.

Macboy: Go home and play with your iphoney.. Considering that the N95 was designed and came out way before the iphone, one must ask "who copied who?"

If anyone has read my comments from the forum (BTW would have been nice to get some credit in for posting the original links and posts).. The whole purpose of this was to do the orientation of the pictures so that you will not get upside-down shots and that portrait shots was automatically the right way up.

I really think this thing opens up so many capabilities - In fact, I would even go to the extreme to say that with combination of this and the keys, would give you a better interface than the Iphoney touchscreen!

I would love to scroll through webpages and text by flicking the phone up and down to move the next page.. or as said before - a mouse emulation from it. If you use it in combination with Gestures (certain movement types), can create macros to do certain things.

If anyone as ever played Warioware for the Wii they will know what I am talking about - you can use the phone very similar to the wiimote and can really do some amazing things.

At macboy: The N95 cam out way way way before the iPhone so therefore the N95 had the accelerometer first and its the iPhone that is copying the N95.

You are clueless just like Nokia; accelerator sensors are old things, Apple just showed to the clueless copycats how to use it properly.

Now don't bait the fanboys. We all know that they are too stupid and blinkered to see the truth when it's plain in their face. Just laugh at them and shake your head like this:

heya everyone.. just saying.. whenever i download anything for my n95, when i tru to install it it, it says certificate error, contact the supplier😞 please email me at a r c h i e _ s u p e r n o v a please don't reply on here (hotmail dot com)

You are asking for AccelerometerPlugin for PyS60 ?
Nokia has published the sensor module for using accelerometer from Python but it works actually with the following models : 5500 , N95 8GB , N93i 20.0.084 (XYZ axes)
N95 classic (only with X and only 4 values : right , left , top , bottom)

For full support for this one you have to use AcceleratorPlugin from NRC plus the aXYZ module (that I have developped) 😊
You can download it HERE on the Python Forum Nokia DiBO
You can ie use your N95 for Lightsaber or Cube example
