I'm about to buy an E90, and the GPS is one of the features I like the most. However, I have spoken to a friend who uses GPS with another phone who tells me that connecting with a satellite and getting directions costs a lot of money.
Is there any truth in this?
No, GPS is entirely free to use. And with the A-GPS firmware update it's pretty good too.

Alright, that's what I thought and hoped. Thanks a lot. I'll check into that firmware once I get the phone.
Theres a good chance your friend is talking about the data costs associated with downloading the maps to use with the GPS.
Nokia Maps does download a fair amount when your using it for directions so you will be charged depending on your data tariff.
Ah, I see. So does Nokia download automatically without even asking?
Navigation upgrades for selected countries and regions are available for purchase. To purchase a navigation upgrade for a certain region, in the main screen of Nokia Maps, go to Options > Extra Services > Add Navigation > Select region/country and select a license period (7-day, 1-month, 1-year, 3-year license period). Choose your payment method and press OK. A secure data connection (via Wi-Fi or mobile internet) will be established to connect to the license server (data transfer costs may arise).
I found this on Nokias website. When they say navigation, do they mean using the GPS to get you location and from there get directions?
You can save yourself large data charges by downloading the nokia maps loader program frmo nokia.
use that then to download the 120meg UK file (For example) to your pc, then it will bung that file on your memory card, negating the need for the E90 to download HUGE ammounts of data. You can turn off the live internet checking, but with the file on the memory card, it will use much less data...
A-GPS uses a little bit of data usage, but not much...
Annoyingly, you ahve to pay for voice guidance route planning, something i would have liked to see out of the box...

Okay great, thanks.
I checked my friends N95, and basically there's two kinds of maps, the GPS system, and what looked like being a separate Google Earth type map. So what you're saying is that just sitting around and playing with the Google Earth thing, actually causes the device to constantly download data which can cost money?
yes, using google maps will need to download the data for its map.
It does appear to cache some of the info locally on the phone, but how much is anyones guess. Use the WLAN to download a huge amount, and then turn the phone off and go back in, and see how much is still there...
or get an unlimited data plan and dont worry about it...

But the same co-ordinate on my Nokia Map E90 shows elsewhere for all the location above.
Thank you.
