Steve has been looking at the latest version of Quickoffice , a powerful office suite for S60 phones. The principal update in version 5 is the addition of support for the new file formats used in Microsoft Office 2007. There are other items of interest too, including printing support, faster operation and a better interface.

Unfortunately seems the upgrade from 4.5 on my Nokia N95 isn't going as smoothly as using either a WiFi or 3G connection I am unable to get past the "Purchase" screen. It goes off then comes back with "Purchase failed (no billing occurred) please start again". :con?
I also tried to do it via the website, but the store has no record of my purchase of v4.5 and wants to charge me the full price. I obviously don't want that. :icon13:
Reported to QuickOffice via their support site and waiting on a response.
Snap with above comment, Purchase failed (no billing occurred) please start again
Trying to upgrade from 4.5 to 5
Sorry to hear about these problems upgrading. I will look in to this with our Quickmanager and Web Sales teams at Headquarters and see if we can work out what is going wrong ASAP. For now, if you continue to have problems, please do use the support channels at www.quickoffice.com so we can log everything correctly. Headquarters is in Dallas, Texas so 6-8 hours behind most of Europe. We will look at this right away.

Thanks for responding so quickly Phil :icon14:
Already done, ticket ID: WUG-719128
It would be a shame after such a good review to be spoilt by something as simple as "technical issues with the download server".
hi
also here - no purchase possible ! ticket created via support channel this morning already !
ciao
Just a note for people who have purchased v4.x already and want to upgrade, you need to return to the original place of purchase (and log in if needed). The discount should be applied prior to purchase (e.g. so if you purchased via Handango before and try to purchase direct via our site I don't believe it will work). If this continues to be a problem please get in touch with me as a last resort - the e-mail address is my name at the obvious domain 😉 I won't say it explicitly for spam reasons.
hi
seems the on device purchase works now ! just downloading 😊
ciao
Everyone - thanks for all the reports. We have corrected the Quickmanager upgrade issue and it should be working now if you try again.
There was a problem with the back-end validation checks we do to ensure the correct SIS file is issued for your phone. This is now fixed.
We apologise for the inconvenience and thank everyone for their interest in v5 and also their patience as we corrected that problem.
Please let me know if there are any further issues...
There are still no driver for pdf making?
If I buy Quickoffice v 5.0, will I be able to open S80 documents? I moved from a 9500 to the E90. The enclosed software transferred my contacts and calendar but was unable to open my S80 documents. If Quickoffice doesn't do this, is there any other software available that can?
Thanks.
I have a different problem.
I have v3 on my phone and was about to move to v4 a month ago, when I heard about v5 to be launched about now. Now, when I try to upgrade through quickmanager, it only gives me an option to purchase v4. Can't I directly purchase v5?
coastal guy - Quickoffice (and any other piece of software on the planet) won't read 'epoc/app' native office files created on a Series 80-based device. But you can save documents in 'word 97' format on the older devices and either read them directly in Qo under S60 or (in some cases) re-save in Office 2003 or 2007 formats on the desktop in between.
malerocks - very strange, v5 appears in Quickmanager on my devices (e.g. the N95 8GB) - Phil?

Steve - before moving to v5, was the last version on your devices v3 or v4? I am assuming yours was v4 since you are usually top on things for software and stuff. I still am using v3. Maybe thats where the problem is.
Another possibility I have discovered is that the quick manager does not have a facility to manually initiate update/refresh. And allows me to refresh content only after a certain number of days have passed. So what I am seeing now is content from the last refresh - when v4 was available. I may see v5 the next time I am able to refresh. But this is the case, how did you all guys get v5?
I am so confused. Phil, you have any suggestions???
I recently purchased 4.5 from Handango, and I was attempting to discover the cost of upgrading to 5, but couldn't see the price without having to commit credit card details to the web site. Does anyone know the $ upgrade cost?
OK, to answer some of the latest questions:
1) For 3.8.x users there is no easy way to manually refresh the catalog. I have to say this was an unfortunate oversight on our part for that release, and one which we corrected as soon as possible for v4 with a manual refresh menu option. I am afraid the best approach is to wait 15 days from the last refresh for the catalog to expire, then refresh and you should see the v5 offer in 3.8.x.
I can but apologise for that - as I said, this issue is addressed from v4 onwards.
2) For Handango upgrade pricing to work they need to do some 'back end' linking of offer IDs to permit the discount to filter through. As I write, we have asked them to do this but it has not happened yet. Hopefully it will happen soon. Until that time, the cheapest and easiest way to upgrade from paid v4.x is via Quickmanager where it should price at $20 for existing paid users.

I've just done this but it is the most unsatisfactory method because the OTA install does not leave the user with a .sis install file. This means that for firmware upgrades or any loss of phone memory there is no mechanism to re-install. Not very good. If possible people should avoid using Quickmanager to obtain software.

It can be downloaded again on the QuickOffice site using your IMEI number - I've done it several times on my N95 after the various firmwares this year.
Steve (or anybody):
Does QO5 save freeze points in spreadsheets?
It's always bugged me that I can freeze a spreadsheet, but if I close and reopen the sheet, unlike desktop spreadsheet apps, QO forgets that the sheet was frozen.
Maybe it's just me, but I frequently create spreadsheets with frozen rows and/or columns.
And if it doesn't remember it when editing, does it remember it for desktop apps in round trips?
Also, how well does it cope with OpenOffice files? I presume it can't read native OpenOffice files, but does it cope better than previous versions (which I gather weren't great) with .doc and .xls files created in OpenOffice? I haven't had problems so far, but then I haven't tried to transfer anything very meaty to my E90 either ... mostly because anything meaty I'd want to use in anger involves freezing panes and I get so frustrated that they don't remember they're frozen 😉
Julie
all new developments very welcome, but whither wifi printing? Killer feature, no?
The other big problem with Quickmanager software purchase is that there is no indication that the credit card details are sent using SSL. For that reason I didn't go beyond that screen.
If that information is sent unencrypted then QucikManager is inherently unsafe and should never be used for software purchase.
I had hoped that I'd be able to update by SMS, after reading the article. No such luck, the option wasn't available in QuickManager, only credit cards.
Freeze panes and saving (and restoring) the last cell cursor position should now work properly in v5.
Quickmanager absolutely uses a secure connection. We will be indicating this better to users in the future since it is a valid (but unfounded) concern.
Phil Spencer wrote:Freeze panes and saving (and restoring) the last cell cursor position should now work properly in v5.
Cursor position seems to be saved but not freeze panes, at least not on my N95.
Does the QuickOffice registation still lock to a sim card or does it lock to a specific device now?
I bought the 3.8 editor on my old N73 but it stopped working when I changed sim cards. I was told when I asked for my refund that the reg process was going to be changed so that the software would unlock onto a specific device and would ignore sim card changes. Can anyone confirm whether this has happened yet?
