New Nokia E71 and E66
I'm still waiting for a successor to the E70 and the fact that they have used the moniker E70 for a candy bar style phone leads me to believe we won't see another E70 style phone from Nokia. Sad too as this is the PERFECT style phone for me and has been for years. I started w/the 6800, the 6820, the 6822 and watched everyone else get 'cool' features because I was going with form since I do so much text messaging. Then, they came out with the all new E70 and I could not wait to get my hands on that thing. I waited for what seemed like almost a year from when I first heard details until I finally ordered a Euro version to replace my 6822 and now all I want is a newer version with a few more features and options. I guess Nokia decided it wasn't a top seller and I'm sure the fact that none of the US providers picked it up helped that decision. I guess it's just not the 'in' style right now. :frown:
Let's be fair, the UK providers didn't really pick it up either. It's something of an unknown to most people over here as well.
I'm looking to upgrade soon (battery cover held on by sellotape where I've repeatedly drilled it for a lanyard) and unless I can get an E90 for a sensible price, the fact that Vodafone are giving away the Samsung F700 makes even that a possibility (despite having very little info on it's full spec)
In my opinion this E71 is too small. I have an E61 and that device has a perfect size which gives a nice display and keyboard. It's sometimes nice with more slim devices but not in this case.
Otherwise it seems to be a very good device. An E90 in E61 styled casing with E51 design.
I would like a mini-Communicator, an E61 clamshell with outer display and keypad for those who think the E90 is too big. For me both E61/i and the E90 has a perfect size.

I just wish Nokia would hire Apple's marketing team.
Agreed - on the whole the E series is forgotten - the networks will only push an N series at you if you want a media smartphone and a Blackberry if not.
If there was a higher awareness and take up of the E90 generally then it's price would also come down (on contract) - as it is, we'll all be dragged kicking and screaming into Windoze Mobile before long unless we pay through the nose for the priviledge of not paying Bill Gates.
If the HTC S710 (Vodafone V1415) had 3G (or better) it could have knocked the E70 into a cocked hat - but it's replacement certainly will.
In the meantime, you have to go up to an E90 or TyTn II or down to a thumbpad if you want to replace an E70 - there's no obvious direct replacement in my book.
I would LOVE to have that E90 replace my E70 but unfortunately I don't have $900US to spend on a phone. Yikes.
Looks like I spoke to soon and with inadequate research. There is an obvious replacement for the E70

Although it's not yet on any of the UK networks, I found an old article from Krisse on buying sim free

The S730 is about 260 sim free in the UK - I'm sorely tempted to "defect". (although I think I've discovered that WM6 can't do youtube "out of the box" any more than S60 can !)

It's not really an obvious replacement since it's not Nokia. 😎

I have E61i and it is close to perfec size, but not perfect IMO. It is too wide for pure one-handed use, yet when you try to go 2-thumb it is not adequate for that either.
So this is what they were probbaly reacting to in making it narrower. The seem to have done this by removing the space between the keys and making the keys themselves slightly smaller.
But of course the dilemna I had was that would make for a smaller screen - and indeed they took that compromise, which I feel could be regretful for some users. One of the great things about E61i is that bug huge screen.
And also if those keys are smaller, they need to be less rounded and high - and give a bit easier. Personally I would have preferred to see the keyboard with sideways double hinged keys that SE uses on the M600i and Pi1i, which for me is the best of all time. Should be an industry standard for smartphones frankly.
I dont see anything about GPS, which i would prefer to useless a forward-facing camera.

I definitely second this. The E71 comes closer to the popular Treo and Blackberry form factor. I wait for it to come out and buy one ...

We are in the same boat. I was looking forward to this E71 but when I saw the form they chose for it I changed my mind. I love the E70 form factor and I was expecting the same on the E71. I do believe the E70 will remain the last of its kind. Shame really because I had adored the 6822 and you have to kill me to touch my E70. I was amongst the first ones to get the E70. I have it for a long time and apart from the occasional hit and miss with the joystick it works flawlessly.
I have recently acquired an E61i and I can confirm that going by the pics posted depicting the form of the E71, it really is too small. This form-factor thing is *always* going to be a subjective issue but for me, in case anyone is interested in my view, if you're going to go for a 'blackberry' form you really can't go any smaller than the E61i. It is, for me, at the bottom-end of how usefully you can use it as a device with QWERTY. When you go E71, it *must* be just pretty unusable in the 'thumb-board' world, I fear. I acknowledge that I have fairly big fingers but even so, the E61i is just about the limit.
So the E71 represents a shame for me. I like this QWERTY thing very much, but going smaller is not going to make it work (even with beefed-up spec to compensate). I keep going back, time and time again, to the combination of E90 and E51. Work and leisure, if you like. You get the picture. What I'm working on at the moment is a slick and straightforward way of switching between the two devices. I'll report on that elsewhere because, depending on what bunch of apps you want to have on your device, it presents different challenges for swift-switching. But the key seems to be, for now, making sure you install *everything* onto the memory card.
