hey i only just got this phone a few days ago and i must say it is a brilliant phone everyworks works the way it should except one thing , the camera ,
The camera is being really odd and the only way i ccan explain is because on my old k800i cybershot which shot 3.2 megapixel photos each photo would be at least 800kb and total sharpness but with the n95 which is set at 5 mp the photos are about 500 kb and no quailty and no sharpness ,
i would expect each photo to be above a megabye and very good quality but even thoe the n95 is set the 5mp and automatic on everything else the quality is not good.
kind regards michael

Nokia n95 8gb camera
My n95-1 takes a 5mp picture and is only around 500 kb . file size is a lot dependant on what phone is saving picture as , n95 saves picture as a jpeg so file size is about right
yeah thats true... also check that image quality is set to 5mb.
ok thanks but it just dosent make sence because the photos of the nokia n95 8gb set a 5 megapixel look like the ones on my 3.2 mega pixel sony ericsson k800i
You do know that the megapixel isn't the quality of the shot right?
The higher the megapixel the larger the image (more information is available to construct the image) therefore if you have a picture at 4X6 you're not using the full 5 megapixels to construct that image because your viewer only needs enough info to make the 4X6 image. I think the max size of a 5 meg shot is 2560 x 1920 , very large.
an image set to display at 2560 x 1920 on a 3 megapixel camera would look bad because there isn't enough information to build a picture of that size, get what i'm saying?
So, to sum it up, the megapixel doesn't guarentee the quality, sharpness or the shot, the user does. The megapixel determines how much information is available to construct an image and determines how large an image can be in terms of resolution.
hey that helped me understand alot
so yes i do have my phone set to 5mp
heres my exact setup
print 5m - large - use for large sized prints up to 11x14 in (28x36 cm)
exstended digital zoom off
scene modes auto
flash auto
sequence mode - single shot
colour tone - vivid
white ballance auto
exp. compenstation 0.0
sharpness normal
contrast normal
iso auto
So, if you're printing 11x14 sized shots than keep the setting on 5mp, if not you're just wasting space in your memory and should drop it down to 3mp.
The camera industry loves the fact that everyone thinks that the higher the megapixel, the better the shot. Sure that would be the case if you're using the shots at a super high resolution (higher than most monitors on the market accept). The average user usually only prints out pictures at 4x6 or 5x8 so anything more than a 3.2 megapixel camera is wasting memory if you have the settings at the highest megapixel.
This is why you have different quality settings in your camera such as economy, normal, high and fine (in most cases).
Waxup: and what do you think about camera (filming) resolution? What settings are you suggesting?
For video recording, keep the default settings in most situations (most things set to auto). The only tip I can give on video recording is that when you are recording, do not move the camera around too much or too fast as it will make the image really choppy on playback.
And for both the still picture and video cameras, do not use them in low light environments, always make sure the area is bright. And stay away from using the zoom feature. As it's been said before on this forum "if you need to get closer to the object, then get closer" (sorry I can't recall who said that).
OK, thanks 😊
i do think the video recording looks amazing , really good quality
but it just so weird that on my cybershot k800i 3.2 megapixel the photos were 800kb now at 5 megapixel the highest they get is bout 500kb

This is because of the format that your device stores the picture in. I think cybershot uses .tif (could be wrong) and the n95 uses .jpeg which is a smaller compression technique.
yeah depends on what you take. take one of a landscape on a bright day and the size will be higher than a room in your house on a dark evening.
By they way is the 5megapixel N95 8GBas good as a proper 5 megapixel dedicated camera?
Or is there more to it than that?
i am going to try this i will take a photo outside and see the size of it by the way i think the both take jpeeg

You're joking, right?😊
It's nowhere near a good 5MP digital camera.
why is it that the 5mp camera in the n95 isnt close to being as good as a 5mp camera?
id like to know too. i guessed it wouldnt be but why. the lense is good old carl zweiss good processer etc
- shutter speed - very slow and not changeable by user, try to take a photo of a moving object with N95
- crappy colour reproduction - faded or over exposed comparing to a normal digital camera
- auto focus time - again, many times it's too late for a good photo
- iso - try to take a photo in the dark without flash, if you'll ever see something it will be grain :icon13:
- flash - every flash is better than the one in N95
- barrel distribution - straight lines (horizon etc.) get bent slightly on N95
- no optical zoom - self explanatory
- no image stabilizer - self explanatory
- no wide lense - one of the most important things for me
- no custom white balance - can't adjust properly in some situations
- no macro mode
- no manual focus
and many other things.
Don't get me wrong - N95's camera is good for a quick point-and-shoot emergency pictures when you don't have your normal camera at hand. And the photos will look good on a web, every camera's pics look good in VGA, SVGA or even XGA...
But that's it, I'd NEVER take photos with my N95 when I can with my old, well used 5MP Ricoh Caplio R3 which is not even a DSLR but a normal digital camera.
It's just not in the same league...

This isn't true - the N95 does have a macro mode (aka close-up mode) and I've used it on many occasions. This was a feature that I desperately needed in a camera phone, as well as general simple focusing.
I agree with everything else though, and if you have a good alternative for taking photos, use it. I have a 10MP HP camera, classed as a simple point and click but it has many more options on it, wider lens, larger screen, ISO speeds etc. I'd rather use that for taking proper/professional photos over my N95.

Yupp, I stand corrected, there is macro mode on N95.
It's still only 10cm minimum though...Some simple 5mp cameras have as little as 3cm.

Correct me if im wrong but isnt that what the exposure compensation setting is for, to adjust the exposure time of the camera

In good cameras you can adjust shutter speed and exposure compensation independently, well at least to a degree.
And yes, you are right - exposure compensation affects the shutter speed.
i just noticed an update for the n95 8gb last night so i done plus my phone is unlocked to work on any sim ,
the photos have improved by about 300 kb and look better , i don't understand , they are all larger files now

are you referring to V15? some people have this problem
Try a search lots of posts on it..
i am now wondering why the video recording get's stuck every few seconds , i don't underrstand i only upgraded and unlocked the phone
upload a vid showing the problem so i can see it..
Latest available software for Nokia N95 8GB, product code 0549487
Version: 15.0.015
lol the video keeps freezen when recording every 5 seconds it will freeze one place every 5 - 7 seconds , for about 1 seconds
Some people have had to reformat their mass memory and reinstall everything without using back up and restore.
I just upgraded my firmware as normal and used back up and restore for everything and mine was fine.
Must just be lucky. Im on a sim free euro1 product code 8gb handset.
