Yes, there have been things floating around before, but this looks much more credible.
Have to say, most people (including me) will be very unimpressed.

Quick breakdown of specs:
950 mah battery (ho hum)
QVGA screen, 2.8 (ho hum)
16gb internal space AND a microsd card slot. Well done!
DVBH support
Quad band
Twin LED flash (no xenon)
5MP camera.
Volume 92cm
weight 125g
length 103mm
width 55mm
thickness 18mm
No GPS!
Not going to get one then?
haha, what gave you that idea! 😉 Think I'll be in this forum till 2009.
First proper specs for this new phone here.
I take it back, according to that it has GPS.
I moved Superchimps post into this thread as he and you had duplicated the thread titles practically... clearly he hadnt searched the forum though before he posted it... as your was about 7 posts under his?!?
Probably desperate to get the first post in about the new specs. Though his link had more info in.
Id be really interested in that phone after seeing it does have GPS in. However the 950 battery really, really puts me off.
I dunno. I kinda liked the N81 look from a N-gage prospective... but that just look like a fat bloater of an N81. I want my 8310 back 😉
Just for referance:
N95 -
Volume: 90 cc
Weight: 120 g
Length: 99 mm
Width: 53 mm
Thickness (max): 21 mm
N96 -
Volume: 92 cm3
Weight: 125 g
Length: 103 mm
Width: 55 mm
Depth: 18 mm (places to 20 mm)
So the N96 is heavier, longer, wider, but slightly thinner. Tbh I prefer that, but trouble is, its not that much thinner.

Sorry about that!
Have you noticed it's using the new more energy efficent version of the TI CPU the OMAP2430 instead of the older OMAP2420 version in the N95, which should offset the small battery I hope.
Hmm, really? Im potentially interested in this phone, as I have a 6110. At the moment the only thing stopping me (apart from the price, probably) is the battery.
The user reviews will be where I start looking once it comes out.
Even so, Id have thought with TV it would be packing a larger battery. Still, given the weight and size, its obviously all been shoehorned in there.
no worries SuperChimp.. 😃
barts already admitted your info is better than his 😉

Do you think the new CPU will offset the smaller battery?
Too bad,
I was really hoping for a qwerty thumb keyboard like the SE M600i or maybe even the Samsung F700. It makes internet/email so much easier..

somewhat... but not near enough.

Out of interest, what DVB-H content is there in UK at the moment? I googled but couldn't really find much.

Not sure tbh. I assume it would just pickup freeview, or am I wrong?
However freview isnt available in many areas (mine), especially without an arial.
DVB-H is a totally different transmission standard to DVB-T. It is different frequency band and has different modulation techniques. I dont believe it is active at all in the UK and not likely to be for some time. I think it is only really big in the far east.

I don't think the improved power handling abilities of FP2 are going to completely offset the battery size either.
You would have thought after the original N95 Nokia would stop putting such small batteries in such powerful phones.
Hmmm, I would rather keep my N95-8GB
I know VGA is already here on other devices but QVGA isnt so bad, not on a 2.8" screen. Windows mobile devices have been using QVGA resolution on screens up to 3.6" for a long time and with only 65k colour so while I think Nokia will move to VGA screens, possible also move towards OLED eventually the fact that they are keeping with what they know best isnt so bad. The quality of the QVGA LCD's that they have used recently has been very high.
This device is not inspiring, yet another N95 variant in my eyes. I dont know why they dont keep evolving the N95 range, make this N95-4. Take the hardware as far as it can go in this form factor.
My worry is that they will focus so much on multi-touch divices that they will lose focus on providing the best converging devices currently available.
I would put money on their first s60 device with multi-touch will not be packed with features anywhere near what the N95 has due to cost, I hope I am wrong.
The N96 is a stop-gap device, I would imagine some point this year there will be a benchmark device with with a new hardware standard far beyond the TI OMAP chipset used in devices from N93 onwards and we will see a S60 touch device based on the current processor of choice that Nokia have.

Thats my worry as well, nokia have always been good/the best for convergance phones, I hope it doesnt change.
These specs are dissapointing. I see little reason why it shouldnt have a xenon flash (battery?), and how can they make the same mistake with the battery? Arrgh.
If it wasnt for the battery, Id be looking at this as the perfect upgrade. Unfortunatly its still the dora.
totally unimpressed with these specs. LED dual flash? is that better than xenon or something? and the battery, i'm almost speechless if these specs are true. dont forget that nokia will sell the UK version of this phone in the US, then re-release the phone with US 3G 2 months later. that is borderline illegal IMO. just announce the phone at the release. or here's a crazy idea, release both 3G variants SIMULTANEOUSLY. the qualcomm issue stinke, i get it. but that's no reason for nokia to be blockheads!
I want to know why theyre using the N81's less than inspiring design again for this device?
From looking at the recent images of the leaked N96 I cant stop thinking that this device is a N-GAGE centric device.
On the old N95 models one of the slides are for multimedia keys. Where are the key now. You can see the slide but theres nothing on it!! Oh thats it they are on bottom of the screen with all the other navigation keys. Does that mean that the new N96 will have N81-esque gaming keys on the multimedia slide.
I have a theory that the multimedia slide will now be used for gaming controls, as in the picture you can clearly see the music controls dotted around the 4-directional pad. Surely this would mean that the multimedia slide was intended for different purpose!
If this is the case does it this mean that the music controlls will only work when in the music app like on the new Sony Ericsson W960i! (they better bloody not!!!!!) But if this is the case, whats wrong with just using the 4-directional pad to control your music. Just like the older N70, N73, N80 etc models therefore not crampping all the directional and nav keys all together.
I hope I am wrong with this speculation as I love Nokia phones and always have. They just seem to have a nasty habit of releasing some odd phones.
What was wrong with delaying the N95 8gb untill the realease of FP2 and allowing the media keys to also control the N-gage whilst playing games.
Who knows but when the n-gage is offically released on all platforms someone will establish how to make the current n95 multimedia keys controll the games. All i can do with that one is hope and see!
I cant wait until this is annouced in the next few coming days, and my speculation can cease. If I am right in my line of thinking then I will go for the N95-8gb when I can upgrade in a week or so. The keys at the bottom of the screen look so cramped especially if the music keys are only allowed to be used when in the music app.
But then again if the new music keys work all the time and not just in the music app and I get dedicated gaming keys. Then i will get that one. Or will I. Some help me i am going mad!!!!!!!!!!
What are your thoughts regarding this?
Super Chimp wrote:I want to know why theyre using the N81's less than inspiring design again for this device?
I dont think its too bad. To be honest, its probably the best your going to get. When your packing that much hardware in, its never going to be the best looking phone. I do think its a lot better looking than the N95.
Side by side, the N95 looks ugly and bricklike compared to my 6110, even though in actual dimensions the 6110 is actually bigger. the result of hardware packing and ports (TV out etc).
If your going for cutting edge packed out hardware, you have to make sacrifices in the looks department.
One thing I would have to have, even though it sounds daft - a proper charging car mount. I dont want to have to plug in a cable each time, Id like it tidy. That was missing on the N95, because it only had a pin charging point.
Bit of a failing imo, as GPS on it was made out to be a big thing.

On MR their has been speculation that the slide you cannot see in the pictures actually hides a speaker like the Samsung i450 does.

but have a look at
http://www.gsmarena.com/5_megapixel_nokia_n96_pictures_leaked-news-390.php
It details where the speakers are and the you can actually see them. Oh and i love the stand feature. So simply, i love it!!!
I'm starting to like this phone, I think it looks good.
One thing I can't understand is why they didn't use the battery from N95 8GB. Also I would have liked it to have the xenon flash from the N82 as well.
There's no mention of a Accelerometer, but then there wasn't with the N95 either.
If you look at my post here you'd have had the chance (perhaps still do) to ask these questions to the N96 product manager directly. 😊
