Well, apparently the battery won't be sooo bad. According to the product manager:
Instead of putting in a bigger battery than the N95, we optimized power usage of key functions, in particular those related to multimedia and entertainment. For example, video playback time is up to 5 hours and music playback time is up to 14 hours, which we achieved through hardware accelerators and other optimizations.
That seems to make sense, but i guess we won't really be able to compare the performances until people start using the phones.
EDIT: just came across this link:
http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/080205/latu011a.html?.v=1
It's not necessarily the chip used in the N96, but it does show what sort of power improvement is possible with hardware optimisation.
And look on the bright side, the flash seems pretty powerful even though it's not xenon:

the problem with the flash is its too bright white... turning things blue... :@
Its never going to be comparable IMHO...

Haha, didn't even realise... 😊
and I'll probably go for it because my 95-1 is getting well krusty (ok its still in perfect condition since I keep it in the Nokia case all the time)
3 points - screen resolution - I am really disappointed VGA is the standard and OLED would have been a desirable thing to aim for at least.
the opting for extra bright LED instead of a flash xenon .. I think its aimed at video taking ..
the camera - argh!!! no optical zoom wtf...
Good things .. plenty of ram and the bonus of a slot to add more! learnt a lesson from the 95-8G ..
its black!! perhaps they did learn something? 😊
As I say .. I'll get one .. I won't be hugely hanging out for it .. but at least they tried!
well thats it for me my mind is well and truly made up.
I love the looks of the n96 its great and that stand is a very nice touch. The only problems is or should i say are;
1 - No xenon flash
2 - The battery
3 - No 3d Accerlation http://thesymbianblog.com/2008/02/12/hands-on-with-the-n96/
4 - A new feature pack. Dont get me wrong i have been waiting for this since forever. Its just in the past i had the first S60 mobile and then the first of every progression from there, and on every one there were bugs which annoyed the hell out me!!!
I am gonna upgrade latter this month from my trusty N73 to new N95 8gb. It seems the best option at the moment. And to be honest i still think it will be the best option when the n96 comes out unless the sort the above issue out before release. Although knowing me i will want one so much when it comes out weather it stays the same or changes slightly. I just love new toys to play and much around with.
But inregards to my earlier post. They did good with media and gaming buttons. good on ya nokia. I just hope a firmware update will allow N95 users to use the media keys for some gaming. All you can do is wait and hope for the best. Come on nokia sort it out!!!!
Hopefully when i get my N95 8gb I can sort out a stand like feature. It cant me that hard to figure out.
Oh i wish i could upgrade now!!!!!!!!
no 3d! Wow. This is really looking like a step back on my n95 8gb.
wesbar wrote:no 3d! Wow. This is really looking like a step back on my n95 8gb.
Its odd isnt it. You hear nokia going on about how the good the games are the at the moment for the n-gage platform and especially with 3d accerlation. But then out of now where they turn and say. Sorry, been there done that, you can just make do with the older graphics. Why, why would they do this. Its just like HTC with there lastest range of qualcomm devices not having the 3d accerlation drivers included in the device dispite all the hardware being there.
It just strikes me as being really backward. Anyway i have only found the one shread of information regarding this and that was from the AAS homepage. So i am sure that it is correct, but i hope its not as that would really suck!!!!!!!!
Stick with the N95 8gb. Or get one like i am next week. It seems to be the better option. Well for me anyway.😮

that'll fix your stand thing ..
if you want to take stills then the N82 might be a better buy than the 95-8G
cheers
Super Chimp wrote:Sorry about that!Have you noticed it's using the new more energy efficent version of the TI CPU the OMAP2430 instead of the older OMAP2420 version in the N95, which should offset the small battery I hope.
Both guesses wrong, but lower battery consumption yes. Depending on how many services are running simultaneously
The only thing that attracts me to the N96 is the looks. It's a really lovely and shiny looking phone.
My concerns?
- Specs not too dissimilar to N95
- If I upgraded to it, DVB-H prolly wouldn't be available here until I upgrade AFTER the N96
- Very pretty at first, but I can see lots of scratches appearing very quickly all over the phone... and don't forget grubby fingerprints!

that sounds a little bit like PR bull. There will be an improvement, but I don't think it'll be a big one.

the media keys on the N95 CAN be used for gaming.. ngage gaming at least. I have creatures of the deep and i use the stop button(or gaming key A) to fish. it works really well, although it can be frustrating because you cant actually feel the button, just the smooth surface where the media keys are placed 😊
kontraband wrote:the problem with the flash is its too bright white... turning things blue... :@Its never going to be comparable IMHO...
The blue tinge comes from the algorithms they use to post process the image, not the flash. If you measure the spectrum and temperature of the flash, there's no issue. It produced a decent amount of white light for the effective range.
As a suggestion as to the lack of 3D acceleration how is this:
The N95 is about the only phone capable of playing advanced 3D games, that shrinks the market for such games (which are also more expensive to develop) much smaller. I suspect they decided there wasn't enough support to warrant putting it in the new phone.

so they use different algorithms for xenon?? I have no knowledgeon this. Is it not possible to use the same principles between the 2 different processes to remove or eliminate the blueness?

Excellent i did not know that thaks alot. Defo the n95 8gb for me then.
I haven't looked at the inside of the N95 8gb, and dont really know much about flash memory to be honest, but i was wondering if it works similar to a hard drive or ram for PC's in the sense that you can change them. Could you stick the 16gb flash memory into the n95 8gb with a bit of tinkering???😊
norfi1983 wrote:Could you stick the 16gb flash memory into the n95 8gb with a bit of tinkering???😊
If you're gonna do that, why not just get the N95 classic and up the firmware to v20? No tinkering necessary (well, not with a soldering iron anyway).

I know that is the logical thing to do, its just i prefer the screen size and media keys on the n95 8gb, and being able to view flash websites.

Flash websites will be available on N95 in the next firmware due anytime now

Does that mean the game can be rotated 90 degrees to the right (instead of the usual left) for the correct landscape orientation?
I still think the n95 8GB is still better than the n96 unless you need masses of storage.
From what I've read though sound quality may surpass the n91 which might be the best feature of all.
Yeah, I've said before that, for me, an upgrade has to have all the features I currently use at the same or better quality. The exception on the N95 is sound quality which is step down from my N91 which was the best sound I've ever had from a portable device, even an iPod. If the N96 is even better, it is a definate possibility as an upgade
just been looking at it on nseries site. Looks like a great follow on from the n95 8gb. Has built in digital tv!
Realise this is in n95 forum but looks like the natural successor??
Whos getting one?

Depends where you are though on the TV thing. It is DVB-H which is very different from DVB-T which is what we have for digital telly in the UK and thus that feature won't work here
Ive been thinking about that, and surely nokia are going to vary the tuners according to what region the phones meant for?
Otherwise for anyone in the UK, this phone is a completely pointless upgrade. And the UK is a huge market for the latest nokia highend phones.

Isn't it more down to the type of broadcast though. I don't know much about it, but it seems if it was easy to pick up DVB-T on a mobile device, there'd be standalone mobile digital TVs by now.
EDIT: Self ownage http://www.amazon.co.uk/MPman-Pocket-Digital-Freeview-Control/dp/B000JSCBI2
Nice one 😊
Nokia must be aware of what country broadcasts what, and I cant beleive they would leave the UK out.
I havent got the figures to compare the UK to other countries, but I bet that its a large chunk of sales.
I'm sure there are already phones that can play DVB-H though and they have just not sold them in the UK.
Personally, if they make the N96 work with DVB-T I am sold on it, and they can sign me up for an upgrade right now.
Really? Even with the 950 battery (yeah, I heard them say its got better power saving stuff but its still going to be awful)?
Your one of few it seems that would go for it over your N95.
