Hi guys this is my first post so be gentle! I have the o2 web bolt on. Can someone tell me, if i use my n95 as a modem on my laptop will this count in my unlimited data usage or will i be charged? I'm currently working away from home and have no internet connection so it'd be a massive boost if it's free!
using n95 as modem on laptop
You should be able to use it with no additional charge as O2 would have a hard time to distinguish whether you are browsing on your phone or on a laptop connected via a phone. I would read your contract, however since "unlimited" never really means that - all mobile providers have some sort of fair-use policy and a treshhold in MB for your data usage. If you stay below it, you should be fine.
Edit: It's only 200MB on O2 - really low, so watch out.
I believe it is now unlimited on o2.
At least that is what I have been led to believe by an o2 CS person.
My free unlimited account goes live from the 16'th.

I agree with md27514 (catchy name mate lol). Unlimited only means you won't be charged for going over but their fair use policy means that if you take the piss they might warn you and if you continue, block you.
I use my phone as a bluetooth modem for my car pc (yes, massive geek) and it works great. I have web 'n walk on t-mobile and i'm not really supposed to use it as a modem according to their fair-use policy but I've not been told off in 8 months of use.
If you just use the connection for general web browsing, then chances are they wont notice, let alone take any action if they did.
However, some people will always take the mickey, so if you start downloading vids/torrents etc, then I'd imagine they will notice.
It states in their T&C's that connecting your phone to another device is not allowed....
The Web Bolt On allows you unlimited use of O2 UKs Edge/GPRS/ 3G networks (as applicable to your handset), for personal internet use via your mobile phone. All usage must be for your private, personal and non-commercial purposes.
You may not use your SIM Card:
in, or connected to, any other device including modems;
to allow the continuous streaming of any audio / video content, enable Voice over Internet (Voip), P2P or file sharing;
in such a way that adversely impacts the service to other O2 customers.
Quite how they would be able to tell if you did use your phone connected to your laptop to get online, I don't know. I would guess as long as you didn't go overboard surfing or pulling big emails etc to your laptop then they would never know.
How would you use the N95 as a modem for a laptop?
I would be interested in this for use at work occasionally.

eg thru IR or Wifi... 😊
Theres a few methods.
Is there a guide to doing this or can someone give me a few tips to get me started?
I do have access to wifi at work and from Sunday will have use of the unlimited web access with o2.
I would prefer to use the latter mostly. Only for web browsing, no downloading except for the occasional update of anti virus prog and similar.

I did a review on joikuspot... search for that for more info.
The IR set up means you need IR output on your comp, the wifi/joikuspot one needs 3g access on phone and wifi access on comp

IR? Is this 1998? 😊
Bluetooth is the nicest way and reliable. USB cable is the most obvious though

Mate!! Dont joke! I see people and hear the sound regularly! 😉
Ignoring which year we're in, all you need to turn your N95 into a modem is either a bluetooth / IR / USB connection to your PC / laptop and Nokia's PC Suite. (I'm ignoring Joikuspot on purpose here, so no Wi-Fi)
Just install PC Suite, connect your phone to your PC / Laptop (USB is the easiest method), and launch the program. It's pretty self explanatory from there on in.
One thing - if you can, keep your phone plugged into it's charger, as the battery dies VERY QUICKLY.
On another note, O2 do *not* have truely unlimited data, no matter what their advertising says. Not even T-Mob, who offer the highest monthly thresholds have truely unlimited data.
I think using PC suite is the way I will go as it will be safer.
I appreciate that using wifi and Joikuspot will have a limited range, but theoretically, someone could use my bandwith whilst I was using it as the beta version is not secured.

yup... absolutely...
Just like to point out that your operator can see if you are browsing using the phone or if you are using a laptop. They can even tell if you are using opera or opera mini instead of the safari browser. Whether or not they follow up on this can vary but if they do it will be very expensive. Telia here in Sweden has data plans which exclude the use of Opera for example.
How can they tell you are using a laptop?
I would not be downloading loads of large files.

Since all your data is passing through their service it's very easy to see if you're using a laptop. They see your ip, your browser model and version, which device you are using including which firmware (in the case of a phone) what your cpu is, even the screen resolution.
So..all you have to do to have internet on your lap top is plug in the N95 8GB through USB via PC suite and the lap top will start browsing the internet? I find that very astonishing.

It really is that easy, I use both my N95 on tmobile w&w (standard) and N95 8g on 3 as laptop modems. Both work great.
