I know battery issues have been done to death but having searched - most posts seems to relate to the Mk1 N95. This is specifically targeted at N95 8GB owners...
My daily use after a full charge the previous night (had N95 8GB about 3 weeks):
1.Every other day I download a podcast (20MB tops) over Wifi
2. I use my music player (in offline mode) each morning for around 30 mins
3. Each day I send about 5 texts (if that)
4. I make 5-10 mins of calls
5. I browse 5 mins (tops) on the net
6. I turn the phone off for around an hour in the middle of the day whilst I drive
7. I don't have any app running in the background.
8. Handy Weather updates every 8 hours for 2 cities over GPRS
9. Bluetooth is not on, nor is wireless scanning.
10. I am in a full 5 bar 3G signal all day, full GPRS signal area in the evening.
My battery is always depleted before I get chance to turn it off in the evening. Is this normal?
I've had my N95 for about 9-10 months now, and I have had to charge it every day! I assumed this was normal! I send about 20 texts a day and make about 30 mins calls etc, and possibly use the net for a 1/2 hour and listen to 10 mins of music! The N95 just doesnt have that great a battery! Its nothing wrong with your handset

At the same time I've never heard of any 8Gb owner saying their battery barely lasts a day. Before, they've always said it'll last at least a day and a half. I think there's something wrong here.
If I use my device like you describe, I would expect 1-2 bars max to be gone by bedtime.
You can check the battery drain using Nokia Energy Profiler. If anything more than 0.15-0.18 with light off and screen saver on, you have a problem. The easiest solution is to sync your contacts + calender, copy your music and pictures to the PC and reflash/hard reset the device. DON'T reinstall a backup afterwards, as this could be the cause of power drain, but sync back your personal items and copy the pics + music back manually. I suspect this will give you up to twice the standby time you have now, unless there's something you forgot to mention.

Interesting - thanks for info on that tool. I just ran it, left it on standby with no apps running and keypad locked for about 30 secs and exported the results as a CSV.
I presume it is the 'power' rating I am looking at? If so, it never dips below 0.28 - 0.31.
If you can confirm this is the bit that should be 0.15-0.18 I'll try a full restore as suggested.
Thanks again
I had same issue, was better than N95-1 but not considerably. I wonder how much more power is consumed by the larger screen, it shouldnt be much.
The obvious 1 of switching off the 3g if you arent using it, how I wish there was a little app that could do that by shortcut key or something!!
Well, I have just re-flashed my N95 8GB with v15.015 firmware, installed only energy profiler and run it again a couple of times with just that and standby running.
I still get a baseline reading (the white line that shows at the bottom left) of 0.31 - 0.32 whether I have it set to GSM or 3G.
Can anyone recommend what to try next? I have found a post about hard resetting using *#7370# - is this any different that re-flashing the firmware?
wifi is a real killer.
If you run your battery dead tho... thats definately not helping... best thing is to continually top it up. Thats the only reason I would see your phone not lasting a day.
Can any other N95 8GB users try running energy profiler in standby mode and tell me what the 'white line' figure is after a couple of minutes of standby - is 0.31 too high???
Fixed - I read this post http://www.n95users.com/forum/its-broke/6954-people-experiencing-sudden-battery-drain.html
And it made me think - I have a silicon case on my N95 8GB - I wonder if that is pushing in a button constantly. So I took off the case and measured again - bingo - without the case profiler measures only 0.13!
So now I just need to cut a whole in the silicon case over the offending button!
Out of curiosity, which button was it?
Ditto, which button? Glad you sorted it out.!
Micky
It was the camera button. I just cut that 'button' away from the silicon case so there was nothing resting on it and now the power usage is a mere fraction of what it was.
Ahh I suppose that certainly would make a difference for the 8Gb model since one of the ways to open the camera app is to press and hold the camera button. Glad to hear it's sorted out now 😊
my n95-3 never goes below .31 on energy profiler. but with my 8GB, it goes down to around 0.1, which is much better. i guess its the demand paging or dynamic voltage thingy working its magic.

i thought that was best, thats what I try and do. Run it til its flat then recharge fully while its off.
Mine is lasting between 1 to 2 days.

This is NOT thought to be the best way to prolong battery life.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Li-ion_battery#Guidelines_for_prolonging_Li-ion_battery_life
"Unlike Ni-Cd batteries, lithium-ion batteries should be charged early and often. However, if they are not used for a long time, they should be brought to a charge level of around 40% - 60%. Lithium-ion batteries should not be frequently fully discharged and recharged ("deep-cycled"😉 like Ni-Cd batteries, but this is necessary after about every 30th recharge to recalibrate any external electronic "fuel gauge" (e.g. State Of Charge meter). This prevents the fuel gauge from showing an incorrect battery charge."
The bottom line on this is that we all need as much power for as long as possible all the time.
Kontraband is correct and charging as much as possible and whenever you can is the way to get as much 'life' out of the battery, whatever the phone (assuming it's Lion chemistry).
That nokia energy profiler program, the timing it shows in the top right corner isn't remaining battery time right?
couse just checked mine, and it said about 16:xx and i had 1 bar left.
So for what else is this program good for except showing the measure when you use it.
davyjones - my understanding is that the figure top right is how long the battery would last, on a full charge, under the current load. When the screensaver kicks in for example you will see this number go up (as the power load decreases).
It's great for knowing if your case it too tight - not a lot else 😉

By starting/using/closing applications, it lets you see just how power hungry they are, and what to expect should you leave them running. Even when left running in the background, many applications will have a significant power requirement. (e.g. WiFi/3G, and GPS tracking). Inadvertantly leaving one running can very quickly drain a battery.
... So it gives you information to help you make choices to suit your requirement for phone use Vs battery life.
For me ?: I still need a small 2 x AA battery unit to boost my N95-8GB phone battery during long walks, but generally I get 1-2 days medium use from my phone (phone, email, Internet)

whats this AA battery unit then?

I'm sure i paid a lot less, worth a search for "Energi to Go"
Thanks for mentioning it, its best idea ive ever seen not counting a "bigger" battery (which shamefully Nokie doesnt made the same size - i would pay triple for doubled battery or at least 150% of normal).

Have had my N95 8Gb for 7 months now and class myself as a heavy user so therefore I just place the phone in a bedside charging cradle every night to charge and if I'm connected to PC Suite I connect a spare charger along with the USB.

Here are some other ways round the battery problem that you may, or may not, have seen.
I carry one of these:-

other alternatives:-

Also I have a spare battery from my N95-1 which fits quite neatly into the N95 8GB in an emergency. :icon14:
