this topic has been asked many times, but i still haven't found a solution, so i thought i'd start from the beginning.
Bought the E90 bout 10 days ago, firmware is 7.40.
one of the reasons for buying was gps. but for the whole period of 10 days i have not been able to get it working. i have nokia maps 2.0, when connected to my home WLAN and sat outside in the garden, and for well over and hour as i previously read, i didn't get 1 satellite fix.
with google maps, same thing, most i had was 1 satellite, which came and went, then a note saying gps signal was weak.
i have a-gps turned on. is there something blatantly obvious that i'm not doing
in fact i think i did get a fix once, about a week ago with nokia maps, out by about 500m.
i was unde rthe impression that it was a pretty much simutaneous affair, or it always has been when i turn on the friends tom tom, almost instantaneously it gets a satelitte fix.
any thoughts?
People claim very quick GPS aquisition but I have nver managed it. Typically 3-5 minutes from a cold start even using very sensitive external bluetooth GPS units. The fastest aquisition happens when you are in a very big open space. Being close to any building can slow it down to as long as 30 minutes. If you are interested download the Trimble software (http://www.trimble.com/planningsoftware.shtml)
I'd suggest checking your A-GPS settings in Tools/Settings/General/Positioning/Positioning server
You need to specify which data Access Point to use (you can't specify a wifi access point so it needs to be a GPRS/3G one)
and you need to specify the A-GPS server address.
I use supl.nokia.com which seems to work fine.
Also you need to ensure that Assisted GPS is enabled as one of the available methods in
Tools/Settings/General/Positioning/Positioning methods (I tend to turn off all the others to make sure I know which one is actually being used)
When I first upgraded the phone to support A-GPS there was a different value in the Server address field and GPS lock-ons were taking several minutes but the moment I changed the A-GPS server over to supl.nokia.com the time taken for a lock dropped dramatically so it's worth checking that everything is set up correctly.
thanks for that info, just had the phoe sat outside in the middle of the garden, quite an open space, for 1 hour 50 minutes, and it was still seeking gps. the a-gps server is set and was set to supl.nokia.com. as for access point i have the following possibilites ( some may be duplicates)
elisa internet
elisa internet(01)
elisa mms
elisa mms(01)
elisa wap
elisa wap (01)
elisa wap GPRS
if it should be gprs / 3G i guess the last one should be checked??
thanks
It's just a guess but I wonder if either
elisa internet or
elisa GPRS
might work.
If you look in Tools/Settings/Connection/Access Points/<connection name> and the Data Bearer is Packet Data then you should be able to use it.
i have checked both the GRPS and internet settings, both are set to packet data. had the phone sat outside for another ½ hour, waiting for GPS. was the only action.
it does seem to find my position, but i don't know if that is remembered from last time. so planning a route is a no go at the moment,
anything else??
many thanks in advance
Can you borrow a bluetooth gps unit and try that at same time as the phone (all bluetooth gps units I have used have an led to say when they have lock)? If the bluetooth comes up faster (should be les than 5 minutes from cold) than the internal phone GPS switch the phone to the external bluetooth gps and (after connecting) see if that is any better.
Note: I have found you have to disable A-GPS to get external bluetooth GPS to work.
A stupid question: is the Integrated GPS option ticked in Settings > General > Positioning > Positioning Methods? I guess it should be by default, but it might have got changed somehow and this menu is a bit tucked away...
yep, all were on apart from bluetooth assisited GPS, a-gps, integrated adn network were all on.
will try and get an external gps to play around with. might be the only solution for when in the car. although the times i've tried in the car, may not be legit as it doesn't get a fix in open space.
thanks for the replies
Where are you located at? Also, weather conditions may affect the performance of GPS signal. In general, I can get a lock within 30secs-1min from cold, and even less time required at often times. I've had a lock within 5-10 secs or so from cold, A-GPS is enabled of course. I notice that in countries outside of US, GPS lock is quite a bit slower, and less satellites are available too.
located in the heart of Nokia - finland. i took the phone back to the operator and asked them to check it out, they offered to update the firmware, which was alrready up to date. so they checked out the phone, took a week, they didn't tell what was wrong with it but they gave me a whole new phone. just ogt home, checked out with Nokia Maps and Google maps, got a satellite fix in less than 30 seconds = 1st phone was a dud.
thanks for the advice and replies

I have been all over Europe with my E90, and the GPS signal is quite good and I take less than a minute to get lock.
I think that, as pakolainen find out at last, it depends on the device and not on your location, weather condition or anything else. :con?
One tip that works for me (in E90 and in E50 and N73 with BT GPS, is to turn on several applications that uses GPS signal: Maps, Location, Sports Tracker, Location Tagger,...). :listen:
